A Royal Christening in Britain Amid a Refrain of Coos

NEW YORK TIMES
By KATRIN BENNHOLD
Published: October 23, 2013

LONDON — Some spent the night in the English rain, huddling under tarpaulins and keeping warm with flasks of tea outside St. James’s Palace. It was all to secure a good view of Prince George of Cambridge on his christening day Wednesday. The prince had not been seen in public since he was born three months ago.

Apparently it was worth it. “Aww,” the crowd cooed loudly when the prince, third in line to the throne, arrived with his parents, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton. The sun was out and the prince was dressed in a lace and satin replica of the christening gown made for the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria in 1841. “He looks like a girl,” one delighted onlooker commented.

A royal christening has perhaps a special significance in a country that has its own church. Ever since Henry VIII broke with the Roman Catholic Church and established a more accommodating version in 1534 so he could divorce and re-wed (several times), Britain’s royals have been the guardians of the Church of England.

Prince George, in other words, will not just be king one day, he will be defender of the faith and supreme governor of the Church of England.

The archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, baptized the prince, whose full name is George Alexander Louis, with water from the River Jordan in a 45-minute ceremony. Archbishop Welby said he hoped that the event would inspire more Britons to come back to church. In a video released on YouTube ahead of the service, he said Prince George would be joining two billion people around the world in the “family” of the church, adding that “the great good news is that God doesn’t care who we are.”

If tradition was on ample display in some ways, in others it was conspicuously absent.

Prince William, Prince Charles, and the Queen all wore the same Honiton lace and white satin gown to mark their entrance into the Church of England. Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge: The Royal Baby Named!

by Alexis L. Loinaz
E.Entertainment

Royal Highness was born at 4:24 p.m. (British Summer Time) in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London, weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces, bestowing the monarchy with its third royal in line to the throne and bringing to a full circle the public's potent fairy-tale fascination that began with the couple's drawn-out courtship and culminated in their storybook wedding in 2011.

As befitting the pomp and pageantry of aristocratic tradition, the baby's arrival—and the eventual announcement of its gender—was heralded via a royal declaration signed by Kate's doctor, taken to Buckingham Palace via police escort, and placed on an easel outside the palace, similar to the protocol that was observed when William was born 31 years ago.

William was by his wife's side when they went to the hospital, he was present during the child's birth and then he spent the night at St. Mary's with Kate and their newborn son.

But an enterprising geneticist wants to make things easy for everyone: She's giving the world a glimpse of how she thinks the royal spawn will look, months before the Duchess of Cambridge even goes into labor!

What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum? Kate Middleton morning sickness will be a royal pain NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

By Corky Siemaszko / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a condition that affects 1% of pregnancies, typically in the first trimester. It is characterized by protracted nausea, vomiting, weight loss.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum sounds like a Harry Potter spell, but for mom-to-be Kate Middleton it’s a royal pain.

It’s morning sickness on steroids — a rare and potentially dangerous malady that affects one in 50 women and produces vomiting so severe the patient cannot keep food or liquids down.

The Duchess of Cambridge has it so bad she was hospitalized on Monday, forcing the royals to reveal that she is about 12 weeks pregnant.

“Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a condition that affects 1% of pregnancies, typically in the first trimester,” said Dr. Kecia Gaither at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn. “It is characterized by protracted nausea, vomiting, weight loss.”

It tends to be more common in young women, women who are pregnant for the first time, those expecting multiple babies, and — oddly enough — in non-smokers.

Kate is 30 and a first time mom.

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Christmas party with palace staff STV 3 December 2012 11:50 GMT (STV)

Kate Middleton and Prince William are to let their hair down and party with their royal staff at a super special Christmas party this festive season.

The couple – now officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – will sip champagne and nibble on canapés alongside some 2,000 guests, who are to be invited to the legendary seasonal bash in one of the state apartments at Buckingham Palace.

The famous 'do' was cancelled back in 2010 because of the tough economic conditions the country found itself in during the recession.

But the Queen has decided to reinstate the festive soiree this year, in what has been a fantastic 12 months for the monarchy in her Diamond Jubilee year.

A source is quoted telling Showbiz Spy: “Everyone is delighted it is back. It is a rare opportunity for everyone to let their hair down and have a great night.”

As well as getting a chance to chat to the staff, the royals will also get up close and personal with those who work so hard for them all year round.

The source continued: “All the royals are there, they dance with the servants and it will be extra special because of the queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the fantastic year she has had.

“Everyone will want to dance with her and congratulate her and all the younger male staff will want to dance with Kate.”

Kate Middleton: No shame for Kate Middleton – only for her stalkers (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER)

By Gina Barreca
Hartford Courant
Posted: Monday, Sep. 24, 2012

You’d think that being a gorgeous, charming, sophisticated young princess fully accessorized right down to having an adoring, healthy and attentive young king-to-be at one’s side would have solved most problems, wouldn’t you?

But we learned last week that even Kate Middleton isn’t enviable – at least not all the time.

Last week’s collective cultural copping of a feel has transformed the Duchess of Cambridge into merely a pair of breasts. Gone from sight and sound are the young woman’s good works and bon mots; eclipsed are the dazzling smiles and apparently affectionate interactions with her delighted audiences in Britain and abroad.

She’s been reduced to a just another girl gone wild, a young woman without a bathing suit top sunning herself on a deck. The paparazzi wanted to get those photographs of Middleton because she’s “somebody.”

Yet the effect of being photographed in such a way is to be cut down to size: to be made into “any body,” to be made into an object. Finally, it is to be treated like nobody at all: just a pair of breasts and a behind.

Some of Middleton’s critics argue that, as a royal supported by the state, she should have known better than to reveal her naughty bits except indoors with the blackout curtains drawn, as if she were living during the Blitz. Or under Shariah law, perhaps.

But of what, exactly, is Middleton meant to be ashamed? Is she being punished for making us want to look at her? C’mon, she’s one of the most photographed women in the world. She’s not some poor girl with low self-esteem who misjudged how to become popular and removed her top for Twitter.

Kate Middleton Finally Pregnant, Says New Report Wed, September 5, 2012 9:22am EDT by Christopher Rogers (HOLLYWOOD LIFE)

A new report out this morning says it’s official at last — Kate and William are expecting.
Read on for the latest ‘evidence.’ Could it finally be happening?

A new report on Sept. 5 suggests that Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton are expecting their first baby together! “Friends say Kate is convinced it’s happened, and while she and William are keeping the news close to the vest, they’re delirious with joy,” an insider confirms to Star magazine. “A woman can always tell when the earliest signs appear, and it’s believe that a passionate night together at their rented country house on an estate in Wales, just after the end of the London Olympics, did the trick.”

We knew that William and Kate, both 30, were ecstatic at the Olympics, but who knew it would translate into conceiving a baby! Perhaps that reported second honeymoon did the trick? “William sits in a very open position. Both she and her Prince have genuine smiles as they gaze at each other. Even after a year, it appears the honeymoon is still on,” body language expert Linda Talley tells HollywoodLife.com of their time at the Olympics.

Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery: "I felt like Kate Middleton": Downton's Michelle Dockery on her screen marriage "There was so much security - but we didn't want people to see the dress before the big day" (MIRROR) By Nicola Methven

The wedding dress is the best-kept secret since Kate Middleton and her mum popped into Alexander McQueen’s studio.

But after two series of will-they-won’t-they, Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley will get their big day.

And Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, says it made her start thinking about marriage for real.

Michelle, 30, says: “I felt a bit like Kate Middleton with all the security, but we didn’t want people seeing the dress before the day. I’d never worn a wedding dress – I’ve never filmed an on-screen wedding before. I loved it.

“It’s a truly stunning dress and I’m sure people will make some comparisons with the royal wedding. As we arrived at the church and stepped out of the carriage the crowds were just amazing, with all these supporting artists cheering us on.”

The actress, who lives with her architect boyfriend of three years in London’s trendy Clerkenwell, added: “It felt strange, you get those nerves. It did make me think a little bit about what it would be like to be a bride.”

The details of the much-anticipated wedding were so secret even Michelle’s mother was kept in the dark.

She said: “My mum doesn’t know we get married this time.

“We have to keep storylines from friends and family, and that is hard sometimes. But also I don’t want to spoil it for them because they watch it as fans.”

But as Dan Stevens, who plays Downton heir Matthew, says, after the couple got engaged in the Christmas special, it was about time.

“It was on the cards, wasn’t it?” he laughs. “I think we’d have been hard pushed to stretch out the will-they-won’t they storyline much longer. But there’s still some thrills and spills, it’s not all plain sailing.”

And the 29-year-old agreed their TV nuptials felt like a celebrity bash: “There was quite a lot of security and it was crawling with paparazzi.

“I didn’t actually see Michelle in the dress till she walked down the aisle which was pretty realistic.”

And after so many ups and downs, Michelle says: “What’s different for us now is we’ve been playing those scenes when so much is unsaid, and it’s all stolen moments. Now they’re finally settled.”

Prince Harry search for Royal bride stars Kate Middleton and Pippa PRINCE HARRY'S PERFECT BRIDEAUGUST 18, 2012BY: RITA WATSON (EXAMINER)

Now that Kate Middleton has joined the search for a bride for Prince Harry, how seriously is she encouraging him to marry her sister, Pippa?

After all, the two are said to be secretly dating as I reported last week.

Ever since the Bisbane Times reported on August 16, 2012, “Why Prince Harry must marry - soon," various media outlets, including Entertainmentwise, have been telling us that "Prince Harry is 'serious' about finding 'The One', and turned to Kate.” Just a year ago Harry was telling us that he would not be married for a long time. But perhaps after the Olympics and seeing his role in the family, he is coming to his senses.

What we know from the early days of the Royal wedding is that Harry and Pippa were on the phone several times a day, much to the chagrin of Chelsy Davey. This could be the dream couple. Although Celebrity Dirty Laundry had a headline read: “Kate Middleton Thinks Pippa Middleton Is Perfect Princess For Prince Harry,” it seems to be just tantalizing gossip.

However, if Harry marries Pippa, Kate can have her wish of having her sister right close by. Several weeks ago RoyalInsight.net told us that Kate wanted her sister to move in, but Prince William said, “No.”

Kate Middleton tops Vanity Fair’s best-dressed list, is joined by Diane Kruger, Alicia Keys, Colin Firth Middleton, who is appearing on the list for the third year in a row, is known for mixing designer duds with affordable staples, and, the magazine notes, for giving props to British designers like Alexander McQueen. BY JOYCE CHEN / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Kate Middleton's wardrobe, estimated at a hefty $55,000, has proven to be money well-spent, earning the Duchess of Cambridge the top honor on this year's Vanity Fair best-dressed list.

Also joining Middleton, 30, on the list is a heavy Hollywood showing, with Diane Kruger, Colin Firth and newcomer Jessica Chastain leading the pack, and musicians Jay-Z and Alicia Keys representing the music world.

Even the Duchess' brother-in-law, Prince Harry, made the cut - though Middleton's husband Prince William was notably missing.

KATE MIDDLETON AND PRINCE WILLIAM BAG FRONT ROW SEATS AT THE OLYMPICS! By Eleanor Young - Tuesday 24 July 2012 (MARIE CLAIRE)

As official Ambassadors of the London 2012 Olympics, the lucky Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have bagged the best seats in the house for some of the most hotly-anticipated sporting events.

According to officials, William and Kate, together with Prince Harry, will cheer on cousin Zara Phillips in the equestrian events, with Prince William also scheduled to attend Team GB football at Wembley, Tennis at Wimbledon and Athletics, including the men’s 100m final.

Meanwhile, Kate Middleton will reportedly watch the swimming, sailing, diving and hockey, and Prince Harry the Beach Volleyball on Horse Guards Parade.

One royal aide told the Telegraph: 'The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have been tremendously excited about the Olympics for a long time and want to throw themselves in to the Games and help out as much as they can.

'They will be out and about for much of the two weeks, but as well as watching the sports and meeting many of the athletes and visiting dignitaries, they hope to meet a whole cross-section of people, from volunteers to cooks in the Olympic village, who will make the Games a success.'

Another insider added Kate Middleton is 'especially pleased she can watch the women’s hockey team because she has trained with them.'

Olympics: Paul McCartney, Daniel Craig, Queen Elizabeth in Opening Ceremony NBC, Olympics — posted by halboedeker on July, 25 2012 9:42 AM (ORLANDO SENTINEL) HAL BOEDEKER

The Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics will be a celebration of all things British.
The best of Britain includes the Beatles and James Bond. Paul McCartney has announced he will perform in Friday’s event, which starts at 7:30 p.m. on NBC.

James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) will be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in a film that’s part of the big opening, The Telegraph reports. Oscar-winner Judi Dench, who plays M in the film series, also takes part in the film.

Is Queen Elizabeth ready for her close-up?

She had better be. She also will officially open the Games. She will have a little help from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, who will be there, too.

But that’s not all for Bond: Craig will reportedly drop into the Olympic ceremony from a helicopter.
