Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock nude scenes are great publicity, (METRO)

Scenes from BBC show Sherlock in which Lara Pulver stripped naked serve as 'great publicity' for the series, Benedict Cumberbatch has admitted.

Cumberbatch, whose eponymous character was confronted by a nude Irene Adler (played by Lara Pulver) in Sherlock's first episode of series two, seemed dismissive of the controversy surrounding the scenes. 'It's great publicity, isn't it?' Cumberbatch told the US Television Critics Association when he was asked about the BBC's decision to air the saucy footage.

'I think there's an awful lot of support for the way that we did it (the scene) and the taste that we did it with. And if it creates more interest in the programme, thank you very much for that.' Some viewers complained about the nudity being shown pre-watershed, after an article appeared in the Daily Mail criticising the scenes in which Pulver's character was seen spanking Sherlock.

The episode, titled A Scandal in Belgravia, saw Holmes being confronted by dominatrix Adler, but Cumberbatch is adamant that the scenes were not intentionally contentious. 'It's not supposed to be a source of stimulation for the audience. It's supposed to throw his (Holmes') radar off, which is exactly what it does.'
