Shirley MacLaine looks set to cause upset as she gives Dame Maggie Smith steely stares in new Downton Abbey stills By LIZ THOMAS and KIMBERLEY DADDS PUBLISHED: 04:48 EST, 30 August 2012 | UPDATED: 04:50 EST, 30 August 2012 (MAIL ON LINE)
As soon as she signed up for the series fans were promised some upset would be caused with the rest of the Downton Abbey characters.
And that certainly seems to be the case if new stills from the upcoming series are anything to go by.
A new image shows MacLaine, who is set to make an explosive entrance as Lady Cora's mother Martha Levinson, squaring up to Smith's Lady Crawley.
The two women are seen giving each other steely stares as they clash once Levinson arrives in England straight from America.
And she certainly looks like she'll upset the household with the stern way she was holding herself in snap shots of the first episode.
The image has been released as anticipation mounts over the upcoming new series is about to start up again.
Fans, meanwhile, have already been treated to a glimpse of MacLaine making her debut in the role.
While some images of the stars have been seen getting into character as they film scenes, they were also given an actual glimpse of the upcoming third series after producers released two 20-second promo clips earlier this month.
In the first online video, the Grantham family is seen discussing the imminent arrival of Lady Cora's mother Martha Levinson, to be played by Shirley MacLaine, who is travelling over from America in the series.
And it was Lady Crawley, played by Maggie Smith, who seemed the most excited about her arrival, as she said: 'I'm so looking forward to seeing your mother again.'
The second clip gives viewers the first glimpse of Maggie Smith and Shirley Maclaine coming face to face on screen in the show for the first time.
In character, Smith tells Maclaine: 'You Americans never understand the importance of tradition," Smith tells her rival.
And she replies: 'Yes we do. We just don't give it power over us. Maybe you should think about letting go of its hand.'
