Matthew Macfadyen joins Michael Gambon, Ramola Garai in cast of ITV's 'Churchill's Secret'

LONDON, June 22 (UPI) -- Romola Garai, Matthew Macfadyen, Daisy Lewis, Rachael Stirling and Tara Fitzgerald have joined the cast of the small-screen movie Churchill's Secret, ITV announced.

Garai will play nurse Millie Appleyard and the others will play former Prime Minister Winston Churchill's adult children.

"Set during the summer months of 1953, Churchill -- now Prime Minister for the second time and in his late 70s -- suffers a life-threatening stroke, which is kept secret from the world," a synopsis said. "Told from the viewpoint of his young nurse, Millie Appleyard, the drama follows his battle to recover as his long suffering wife Clemmie, desperately hopes the stroke will force Winston to retire while his political friends and foe scheme to plot who will succeed him. Meanwhile, his adult children descend on Chartwell, unsure if he will pull through, as tensions within his family begin to surface."

Filming is to begin this month in London, Hayes and at Churchill's principal family home, Chartwell in Kent. Churchill's Secret will be co-produced with Masterpiece where Rebecca Eaton is executive producer and will air in the United States on PBS in 2016

Good news, bad news, fans of Tom Branson (Allen Leech). First, the bad news:  The most eligible bachelor at Downton Abbey has been spotted filming a Season 5 scene with.....

No, no no.  With...

Sarah Bunting (Daisy Lewis).

After Season 4 episode spent posing the village schoolmarm as Tom’s new love interest, we aren’t exactly shocked by this development but we know plenty of fans won’t be pleased

When we asked fellow Downtonites if Tom and Sarah should end up together, the response was a resounding no! At last count, nearly 70 percent of voters felt the widower of dear Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) should stay as far away as possible from Ms. Bunting.

What has Sarah done that has set so many fans on edge? Our guess: her rather sneaky ways at the end of Season 4. You’ll recall she wiggled a way into visiting Downton despite Tom’s obvious hesitation to have a lady caller while his family was out. She’s also got a real chip on her shoulder about the Crawley family being so well off in the world. Just wait until you meet the Dowager, Sarah!

Not that there’s any sign she will. We’ve been getting a few photos from Season 5 filming and the shots of Sarah show her out with our man Tom with no chaperone.

With leading characters dropping like flies, Downton Abbey is certainly in need of fresh talent.

And after the arrival of Hollywood legend Shirley MacLaine to period drama, another critically-acclaimed actor has followed as Paul Giamatti joins the cast as an American playboy and relative of the Crawleys.

But Paul isn't the only new arrival, with British actors Daisy Lewis and James Fox getting a warm welcome from Shirley, 79, as they filmed an outdoor picnic scene for the Christmas special.

Downton Abbey: Newcomer Daisy Lewis (SPOILERS)

This beauty will be going all pout to set tongues wagging at Downton Abbey.

Actress Daisy Lewis is being brought in to heal the broken heart of widower Tom Branson in the new autumn series on ITV.

And those haunting lips and sultry looks seem bound to remind him of wife Lady Sybil Crawley who died in childbirth in the last series.

Newcomer Daisy, 28, who has starred in Doctor Who, will play the live-in governess of Tom’s daughter, also called Sybil in memory of her tragic mum, played by Jessica Brown Findlay.

She will quickly strike up a ­romance with the handsome Irishman, the family’s former chauffeur, played by Allen Leech.

A source said: “Daisy will become one of Downton’s most prominent characters. She wowed producers in her audition and they are delighted to have secured such a brilliant young actress.

“Her romance with Tom will be one of the main storylines of the series. He will begin to develop feelings for her and they start a secret affair.

"Tom will have an even bigger role in the new series after ­becoming the estate manager of Downton.

"The writers know he is a very popular ­character and the ­viewers were gripped by Lady Sybil’s traumatic death.

“In the Christmas special one of the new maids tried to kiss Tom although, at the time, he wasn’t quite ready to move on.

“But viewers will see that’s all going to change in the new series.”
