Colin Firth to star in Russian submarine disaster film Kursk

Oscar winner Colin Firth is reportedly to star in the submarine disaster movie Kursk for Far from the Madding Crowd’s Thomas Vinterberg, Variety reports.

Based on Robert Moore’s 2002 book A Time to Die: The Untold Story of the Kursk Tragedy, the film is being produced by France’s EuropaCorp. Kursk may be a more cerebral creature than the Luc Besson-owned studio’s usual staple of exploitation-tinged action movies, including Taken.

A Time to Die details events that took place in 2000 in the Barents Sea in the Arctic Circle. Captain Gennady Lyachin was engaged in a torpedo exercise on board the submarine K-141 Kursk, called “the pride of the Russian navy”, when the missile exploded, instantly killing seven men in the ship’s forward compartment and leaving the other 111 crew members’ lives in danger. The movie will tell the story of the battle for survival on board the submarine and the desperate efforts of the crew’s families to persuade authorities to mount a rescue effort.

Tom Sturridge to join Carey Mulligan in Far From the Madding Crowd film

Tom Sturridge will star alongside Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts in Thomas Hardy adaptation, the English-language debut of Festen's Thomas Vinterberg

Tom Sturridge has won the lead in Thomas Vinterberg's forthcoming adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd. The project, from studio Fox Searchlight, will be the Festen director's English language debut. Carey Mulligan and Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts – who made his name on Rust & Bone – co-star.

Far From the Madding Crowd focuses on the consequences of a young woman's relationship with three men at the same time. The 1874 novel has previously been adapted for cinema three times, including a notable 1967 version starring Julie Christie and Terrance Stamp .

The film focus is on the relationship between Hawking and his wife and it marks a re-team of the actor and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Les Miserables. They are actively discussing the female lead, with an early fall start being eyed. Redmayne has also been courted to star with Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts in the Thomas Vinterberg-directed Far From The Madding Crowd, but I believe that his priority is the Hawking project written by Anthony McCarten.
