Downton Abbey Christmas special: Hollywood star Paul Giamatti to join cast STV 24 June 2013 17:41 BST
Downton Abbey is about to receive another injection of Hollywood magic with the news that movie star Paul Giamatti is to appear in the Christmas special.
Fans of the of the period drama were delighted when Shirley MacLaine joined the show for the most recent series last year, with the A-lister playing Cora’s hard-to-please mother.
Now audiences will watch as Paul, who has appeared in movies including Saving Private Ryan and Planet of the Apes, appears in this year’s festive special as Cora’s playboy brother, Harold.
Gareth Neame, the managing director of programme-maker Carnival Films, said: "We're excited that Paul Giamatti will be joining us on Downton to play Cora's brother Harold, the rather free-spirited uncle to Mary and Edith.
"We can't wait to see him work alongside Shirley Maclaine, who are both sure to upset the Granthams' apple cart in this year's Christmas Day episode."

'Downton Abbey' Season 4 Premiere: Lady Mary Set To Resort To Her Old Ways Following Matthew's Death? VIDEO & Details By Robert Leo, EnStarz
After the unexpected death via car accident to Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) brought Downton Abbey Season 3 to a close, many of the period piece's loyalists have surely been wondering what lies ahead next for the now widowed Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery).
According to TVLine, the fourth season of the British-American drama will feature a grieving Mary that will repossess many of the earlier traits she had before getting involved with the late Matthew
Downton executive producer Gareth Neame explained the respective dynamic of the single mother to the site.
"She mellowed with Matthew [and] opened up a lot more. But I think [after losing Matthew and little sister Sybil], she would be just so devastated that I think it would lock her down and [she would] go back into a lot of the traits that she had before - that very difficult to read characteristics she's got," he said.
"I think we'll see a lot of those very dark and complex things about Mary," Neame continued.

Golden Globe award-winning Gareth Neame has hinted the Crawleys could be left homeless as their world slowly crumbles in front of viewers.
In the past major characters have been killed off and the stately pile could be the next victim.
Gareth said: “The first line Julian Fellowes wrote in the original script and indeed the pitch for the show talked about this great house that stands in this great park and everything it symbolises looks as though it would stand for a thousand years, but it won’t.
"The whole point about this is that it is the end of this era and that has always been hanging over the characters… the place and lifestyle we depict vanishes within a few years.
“So anything can really happen. It is coming out of its heyday and it is going into decline.”

Downton Abbey Season 4 Spoilers: What's Next For Branson and Rose? (WET PAINT)
On the Downton Abbey Season 3 finale, it was revealed that Rose, Violet's wild child great-niece, would be staying at Downton while her family went to India. According to TVLine, actress Lily James has been upgraded to series regular for Downton Season 4, so get used to seeing Rose around.
On that note, Entertainment Weekly had a Q&A with Downton exec Gareth Neame, who was coy about Season 4 spoilers, but answered a few questions.
Rose has a personality that's different from anyone else at Downton. Is that the point of her character?
"I think so. We’re entering a more modern age, the post-war into the 1920s and all things that came from that, a slightly freer world and women having more freedom."

"Downton Abbey" continues to flourish in the U.S., but although many fans remain loyal to the British-American drama, there are several who aren't too thrilled with the recent death of Lady Sybil.
While losing characters in a show will always be a mixed bag in terms of fan response, executive producer Gareth Neame told People that he sees the situation of Sybil's death when giving birth to her child as an opportunity for the series to go in a new and exciting direction.
"These exits can be good opportunities for the drama because they allow you to take the story in a different direction and change things in a way you hadn't quite thought of," he said. "It can be seen as a blow to lose characters, it can very often be as much an opportunity as it is a loss."
"Downton" creator Julian Fellowes said the public is smart enough to realize "that when Sybil dies or when [another character, whose identity is being concealed] dies, it is because the actor wanted to leave" the series - rather than a character dying just for the sake of the plot.

Downton Abbey executive producer Gareth Neame has confirmed that the Dowager Countess Violet Crawley will be back in season four of Downton Abbey to lord over all those peons who pretend they could be as good as her. Pish.
The return of Dame Maggie Smith to Downton wasn’t a sure thing before now; last summer showrunner Julian Fellowes admitted “I can’t tell you, ‘Oh, yes, she’s definitely contracted [for Season 4] — because she isn’t. It’s entirely up to her when she stays and when she goes,” adding “With Maggie, you never know, Other [actors] sign on for the next series and they sign for this and they sign for that, but she doesn’t. She stays her own person.”
That’s right. Because Dame Maggie is a legend.

BritWeek honored Julian Fellowes, creator of the hit PBS Masterpiece Classic, Downton Abbey, and Gareth Neame, executive producer, at a press lunch today and shared big news about BritWeek 2013. Michelle Dockery, who has a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in the TV Drama, also attended the lunch.

It will also include new public events such as an Echo Park music party and a street festival along the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica.

The gushing fans might well have been tweens swooning over “Twilight” ’s Robert Pattinson . But the starstruck belonged to a slightly different demographic. They were members of WGBH’s Ralph Lowell Society (supporters who give $1,500 or more annually to the station) and their guests.
Their heels were largely sensible, their hair was often silver, many were men, but bosoms were heaving at WGBH’s Brighton studios on Saturday. Two of the biggest stars of “Downton Abbey ” had come to town: Lord Grantham (OK, the actor Hugh Bonneville ) and Thomas (really Rob James-Collier , wearing decidedly non-Thomas-like coral high-top Nikes, facial stubble, and shaggy hair).
The day’s second event kicked off at 6 p.m. with a 35-minute tease of the show’s two-hour Jan. 6 US premiere, then it was on to the Q&A, with the actors, “Masterpiece” executive producer Rebecca Eaton , and “Downton Abbey” executive producer Gareth Neame .
Among the highlights: Is Dame Maggie Smith , who plays the Dowager Countess of Grantham, as clever as she appears? Yes! James-Collier told a story: When shooting started, he nervously asked the legend to sign a DVD for charity. “Who’s that?” Smith retorted. “Your sister?”

Downton Abbey is still having a moment. The British import, which received three Golden Globe nominations Thursday morning, continues to linger in headlines despite not having aired a new episode in the U.S. since February.
Nearing the end of its third season's U.K. run and already commissioned for a fourth, the latest rumor has been of star Dan Stevens and the suggestion that the actor may not reprise his role of Matthew Crawley. Executive producer Gareth Neame says fans might be getting concerned over nothing.
"There's been so much speculation about this cast," Neame told The Hollywood Reporter, reacting to its latest accolades. "The thing with the show is, because we don't make a long run -- we shoot about 11 hours of TV a year -- our actors have the opportunity to go and do other work."
