Benedict Cumberbatch, Out of Darkness By Mary Kaye Schilling (VULTURE)
I meet Benedict Cumberbatch the afternoon after an awkward appearance on Letterman, where he was promoting his part as John Harrison, an intergalactic terrorist, in J. J. Abrams’s Star Trek Into Darkness. It’s a summery spring day in New York, and we’re on the patio of his room at the Bowery Hotel. Cumberbatch—his dead-white complexion shaded by a newsboy cap—is “chuffed” by his posh digs; it’s his first starring role in a blockbuster, and he’s not used to this level of star treatment—well, from everyone except David Letterman, who has not, apparently, been following the actor’s rise as avidly as the actor’s Internet fan club, the Cumberbitches. Not only did Cumberbatch have to follow an animal act, but Letterman, who began by referring to Star Trek as Star Wars, asked his guest—a veteran of twenty movies, including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse—if he was new to major motion pictures. (The actor, being the polite, Harrow-educated Brit that he is, jumped in to save his host: “This major? Yes!”) I tell Cumberbatch that, given Letterman’s cluelessness, I was surprised there weren't the usual efforts to wring a laugh from his name.
“Well, since he couldn’t even say it,” says the actor. “At one point, before I came on, he announced me as ‘Benedict Cumber… ,’ and his voice sort of trailed off. My friends said, ‘What the fuck was that? It was like his batteries ran out.’ But that’s the sort of thing that’s been happening here, where I’m not as well known,” he continues. “It’s strange to be 36 and still explaining the weirdness of my name.”
Cumberbatch is very well known in Britain and practically a superstar online thanks to his Golden Globe–nominated role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s high-tech, modern-day Sherlock, which debuted in 2010. (It’s more of a cult hit here, where it airs on PBS.) “I generally don’t look to see what people are saying about me,” he says. “But when the show started to explode in Britain, and I was reading stuff online, I started to think it was real. I thought I’d walk outside my door and hundreds of people would be lining the streets, cameras would be flashing. I quickly realized the audience was virtual.”
Well, not really. Those are flesh-and-blood fans huddled outside the London locations of Sherlock, which is currently shooting its third season. “That’s why I have this ridiculous length and color,” says Cumberbatch, tugging at his black hair (he’s naturally auburn). “Every time I take Sherlock out of the box, I have to put the fucking hair dye on.”
This is a man who lives for details. His breakout role in Britain was the young Stephen Hawking in the BBC’s 2004 film Hawking. It introduced one of his great talents—humanizing the analytical—and a reputation for precision and obsessive preparation. To wit, this description of his Star Trek villain, a genetically engineered superman: “I wanted Harrison’s voice to have something slightly manufactured and odd, that sounded test-tube-made, where every word was sort of etched,” Cumberbatch explains. “I was keen to make his violence quick—not balletic, but purposeful. And his physique—he’s not Bane, he’s not this unsurpassed physical entity. He’s a warrior, a spearhead—someone who just carves his way through and doesn’t stop. There had to be emotion in the movement as well, and when he was at rest, it was more reptilian.”

Henry Cavill, Benedict Cumberbatch, Carey Mulligan, Tom HIddleston, Luke Evans, Idris Elba: British Actors Taking On Hollywood In 2013 (FEMALEFIRST)
And 2013 is no different as there are a whole host of British actors who have very exciting and successful years ahead of them with some great projects on the horizon.
We take a look at some of the British actors who are whipping up a story on the other side of the pond this year.
- Henry Cavill
The role of Superman is one of the most iconic of all time and Henry Cavill is going to take over that role when the franchise is rebooted this summer.
Man of Steel will see the actor team up with visionary filmmaker Zack Snyder as the popular Superman franchise is rebooted.
The role of Clark Kent is set to be the biggest part of Cavill’s acting career and it will send his star rocketing this summer.
- Benedict Cumberbatch
A British actor who is creating quite a storm this week is Benedict Cumberbatch as he is one of the fantastic new additions to the cast list of Star Trek Into Darkness.
He takes on the role of John Harrison in the J.J. Abrams directed movie in what is the biggest film role of his career.
It is great to see Cumberbatch in a role such as Harrison as it really shows off his villainous side - which is something that we have not seen from the actor so far.
And this movie kicks off a super busy year for Cumberbatch as we are going to see him in a series of movies including Twelve Years A Slave, August: Osage County and The Fifth Estate.
- Carey Mulligan
Carey Mulligan already has a Best Actress Oscar nomination under her belt but it has been a while since we have seen her on the big screen - Shame at the beginning of 2012 was her last movie.
But 2013 sees her back as she is set to take on the role of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s big screen adaptation of the much loved novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Mulligan is working with Luhrmann for the first time on this project and she will also team up with Leonardo DiCaprio and Joel Edgerton.
She is also set to star in Inside Llewyn Davis, which is the latest film from Oscar winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen.
- Tom Hiddleston
We haven’t seen Hiddleston on the big screen since the billion dollar success of Avengers Assemble this time last year… but the actor is back in 2013.
He is set to reprise the role of Loki this autumn with Thor: The Dark World - which sees him reunite with Chris Hemsworth.
This is the second stand alone Thor movie and it is already one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.

Benedict Cumberbatch takes over the world Neil Simpson 1 May 2013 15:09 (THE SPECTATOR)

What do you do if you wake up to discover your colleagues have told the papers you don’t deserve your job? If you’re Benedict Cumberbatch, you just stick to your Star Trek script and carry on trying to destroy the world.
Benedict was right there in the crossfire when Downton Abbey’s Rob James-Collier said actors from public schools have it easy and are sucking up all the best jobs. James-Collier (double-barrelled, but Stockport-born working class) reckons you need a rich family behind you if you’re to survive the auditions circuit and stick it out till some decent-paying jobs come along. Worse still, James-Collier isn’t sure that the rich kids make the best actors. ‘If I’d had a comfort blanket I wouldn’t have been as passionate and driven,’ he said.
Having spent the first part of this year examining all things Cumberbatch for a new Behind the Scenes biography, I’ve got to say that The Batch is about as passionate and driven as they come. Yes, he went to Harrow. Yes, Downton’s Julian Fellowes is a pal of his actor parents. Yes, he admits he’s the ultimate ‘posh bloke with a silly name’. But that’s not stopped the new Star Trek baddie from paying his dues.
Agents and casting directors I spoke to say Benedict surprises everyone by the number – and the variety – of jobs he takes on. If there’s an overlap of dates he’ll try to juggle things so he can take as many roles as possible. If there’s a choice between a holiday and a job – even something as low-paying as a Radio 4 comedy show – then he always takes the job.
Why the ferocious work ethic? It’s partly because he wants to prove himself to the world, and to his peers. It’s also because he’s terrified of being type-cast. For years the man The Sun calls ‘the brooding brainbox’ worried that he would be forever cast as ‘slightly asexual, sociopathic intellectuals’. And there are less of those on telly than you might think, especially in drama.
That’s why he still reads radio scripts and won’t rule out a return to live theatre. That’s why he is going back to Wales this year to film the third series of Sherlock – even though you might expect him to be kicking back in Hollywood. After the madness of Star Trek we’ll see him act alongside Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and Laura Linney in a trio of big films before Christmas.
He’s certainly hoovering up a lot of great jobs. But that’s not because he had posh parents. It’s not because his posh school gave him an unfair head-start. In fact, when Harrow old-boy Andrew Birkin tried to give Benedict the lead in The Cement Garden, the teenager turned him down.

Benedict Cumberbatch 'in talks to play Alan Turing' the Enigma codebreaker MATILDA BATTERSBY FRIDAY 01 FEBRUARY 2013 (INDEPENDENT)
Benedict Cumberbatch who is currently playing Julian Assange in Wikileaks film The Fifth Estate looks set to bag another high profile real-life character.
The Sherlock actor is in talks to play Bletchley Park codebreaker and mathematician Alan Turing according to a report in Deadline.
Graham Moore's screenplay The Imitation Game has been commissioned by Black Bear Pictures with Headhunters' Morten Tyldum signed up to direct.
Turing is widely hailed as responsible for cracking the Enigma Code which greatly helped British naval efforts during the Second World War. Also known for what is regarded as the first blue print for modern computing, Turing's heroic wartime activities were not revealed to his family or the world until after his death.

Benedict Cumberbatch - Assange savages film about WikiLeaks (THE AGE)
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says a film about his whistle-blowing website is propaganda designed to fan the flames of a war against Iran.
The Fifth Estate, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, is due to be released in November.
Assange on Wednesday night said WikiLeaks had managed to get hold of a copy of the script of the DreamWorks movie.
And he doesn't like what he's read.
"It is a mass propaganda attack against WikiLeaks the organisation," the 41-year-old Australian told students in Oxford via a video-link from the Ecuadorean embassy in London.

"But it is not just an attack against us – it is an attack against Iran.
"It fans the flames to start a war with Iran."
