Warner Bros. and Guy Ritchie's reiminagining of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which will star Man of Steel's Henry Cavill and Lone Ranger's Armie Hammer, will be released next August, a seven-month delay from its planned January release, the studio announced today.

No specific reason was given for the delay, and while it's easy to assume the worst when a long delay happens, the fact that it was moved from January to late summer would seem to suggest that Warners actually has more rather than less faith in the film.

Warner Bros. schedules ‘Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ with Henry Cavill for January

After years of production delays, Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of the hit 1960s spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. will finally hit the big screen next year. The movie was directed by one of the studio’s favorite directors, Guy Ritchie.

The studio has set the film for Jan. 16, 2015, notes Variety. Production on the project has been underway since September, with shooting taking place on location in London and Italy. It will cover the first mission for American spy Napoleon Solo and Soviet spy Illya Kuryakin.

Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill was cast as Napoleon Solo, the role Tom Cruise was supposed to have at one point. The Lone Ranger’s Armie Hammer will play Illya Kuryakin. Hugh Grant also has a role in the film.

At one point, the movie was also set to be directed by Steven Soderbergh and starred George Clooney, but that also never materialized. Soderbergh ended up being replaced by Ritchie, who directed the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes moves for Warner Bros.

That Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit trailer just gave me Cold War nostalgia, which is probably why I’m finally covering some of these photos from the film shoot for The Man from U.N.C.L.E., starring Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill. The Vespa photos are from last night, the shadowy pics of Henry standing alone are from a few weeks ago (I just never got around to publishing them). So far the film shoot (it’s been directed by Guy Ritchie) has just been taking place in Rome.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode of The Man from UNCLE television show, so I don’t really know what’s supposed to be happening in these pics. From what I gather, Henry is playing the American spy (Napoleon Solo) and Armie Hammer is playing the Soviet spy (Illya Kuryakin). I’m curious to hear Armie’s attempt at a Russian accent. Will it be better or worse than Kenneth Branagh’s? The film also features Hugh Grant, Alicia Vikander (who is everywhere these days) and Jared Harris. The plot involves Illya and Napoleon working together to defeat a “criminal organization”. In the 1960s.

His co-stars have been filming since late last month and Hugh Grant finally joined them on the set of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. on Wednesday.

The 53-year-old actor was dapper in a dark three-piece suit, white shirt and sunglasses as he filmed scenes in Rome for the big screen remake of the 1964 television series.

Hugh’s character Alexander Waverly, the British head of the multi-national intelligence organisation U.N.C.L.E., was meeting with American agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and Russian agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer).

Set at the height of the Cold War, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (which stands for United Network Command for Law Enforcement), was originally a TV series created by Sam Rolfe, Robert Vaughn and David McCallum.

It aired on NBC for four years from 1964 and has been adapted by director Guy Ritchie for the big screen.
Cavill plays Agent Solo, the part played by Robert Vaughn in the original US TV series, who teams up with Hammer’s operative Kuryakin (previously portrayed by David McCallum) to join forces against a mysterious criminal organisation.

According to Star, “Tensions are high between hotties Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer on the set of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”

“Henry and Armie barely talk on set — and when they do, it’s not pretty,” a so-called “insider” tells the tabloid.

The Star source explains, “Henry considers himself a highly trained thespian and believes that Armie is only interested in making popcorn movies and being famous.”

THE FACTS:

And maybe Star should stop wasting ours.

Sources close to the situation tell Gossip Cop that everyone’s “getting along,” and that the tabloid report is totally “false.”

As he builds his cast for The Man From U.N.C.L.E. to start shooting in September, Guy Ritchie isn’t just looking for leading Men From U.N.C.L.E. He’s also filling out supporting roles and has locked down Hugh Grant to make an appearance.

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are the stars of the film adapted from the 1960s spy show, playing special agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin respectively. They work for the United Network Command for Law Enforcement, forever on guard against the evils of T.H.R.U.S.H. Which is, as we seemingly always have to point out, an evil terrorist organisation, not something that requires a special cream from Boots.

Grant is set to play the head of British Naval Intelligence, which is ironic given how hard he’s campaigned to stop people spying on him. He joins a cast that also includes Alicia Vikander and recent recruit Elizabeth Debicki.

Hugh Grant has signed on for a supporting role in Guy Ritchie's spy film The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Warner Bros.’ big-screen take on the classic 1960s spy TV series will star Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill, who stepped in to replace Tom Cruise in late May.

 The film follows special agents Napoleon Solo (Cavill) and Illya Kullyakin (Armie Hammer), who work for the mysterious United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.). Alicia Vikander also stars as the female lead in the pic.

Grant will play the head of British Naval Intelligence.

Production is slated to begin in September.

When Guy Ritchie calls “action” on the set of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” in early September, it will mark the end of a 35-year odyssey to tailor one of the most popular spy series of the 1960s into a major Hollywood movie.

Warner Bros. hopes to spawn a new franchise from the film, starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer as U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, respectively. Tom Cruise had been slotted for the lead role, but when he fell out in late May, the studio insisted its production budget be pared down to about $75 million before moving forward with the picture, targeted to be released next year. The movie, which one of the filmmakers describes as a fairly serious action pic set in the ’60s, will begin production Sept. 7, and film in London and Italy.

With a script by Ritchie and his “Sherlock Holmes” writer and producer Lionel Wigram, the film is an origin story that tells of the first pairing of the two spies — one American, one Russian. Unlike the friendly banter of the original series, the pair are initially hostile to each other, said someone familiar with the script. Ritchie declined multiple interview request

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie should be as American as apple pie and, with Steven Soderbergh, George Clooney and Tom Cruise all attached at various points, it was. 

Now, the adaptation of the 1960s American TV show is looking decidedly British, with Guy Ritchie directing and Henry Cavill playing Napoleon Solo to Armie Hammer's Illya Kuryakin. 

Surely you can't get more American than the stars of Man of Steel and The Lone Ranger right? Wrong. Cavill's actually a Brit from Jersey, and while Hammer is American, he was raised in another British isle, the Cayman Islands. '

'We got a lot of BBC and British entertainment down there, Blackadder and all that stuff,'' Hammer says. ''I grew up on it.'' 

The actor has learnt to laugh about work on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. remake, because the project has seen him swapping partners like socks: ''As soon as I say Henry Cavill it'll be someone else.''

Cavill is committed though, looking forward to a change of pace from Man of Steel, particularly with the girls.

''Absolutely. Keep in mind the characters are so vastly different,'' he says.

''Napoleon Solo, he's a charmer, where Superman is the exact opposite - he's charming by nature but he's not someone who goes out there to charm people or women.''

The actor does not buy into a Superman curse ("If anything bad happens to me, it's not because Superman made it happen"). Nor does he fear being stereotyped in the role — a fate that has befallen other actors.

"There is always that risk. But it's a risk I'm glad to take," he says. "The way to break out of that is to do a different role."

To that end, Cavill just signed on to star as a spy in Guy Ritchie's adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., replacing Tom Cruise, who is no longer associated with the project. He is tight-lipped about his Napoleon Solo role except to say he'll be alongside The Lone Ranger star Armie Hammer, who will play Illya Kuryakin.

"Things are full-steam ahead. It's all very early days. But it's gonna happen," Cavill says before pausing. "Well, this is Hollywood. It's supposed to happen."

He might be understandably cautious, given his history. But Cavill knows he's one Hollywood success story that has taken off after a few scrubbed launches.

"It's like, wow, I've been in this biz for 13 years and worked really hard. I've suffered a lot. And I've put my all into everything I do. And it's so nice to have it come back in such a beautiful way."

As he exits the restaurant, Cavill makes it clear that he plans to repay the kindness.

"I'm going to go fly around a bit," he says as he walks away. "Maybe save some lives."

However, if a recent poll from Fandango is any indication, Henry Cavill looks to be getting a warm reception as Superman. Unlike polls conducted on a site like well Comicbook.com, where comic book movies and their stars would be at a huge advantage, Fandango reaches a more general audience.

In the Biggest Male Breakout Movie Star for 2013 category, Henry Cavill finished in the top spot for his upcoming role in Man of Steel.  He was followed by Sam Claflin in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Arnie Hammer in The Lone Ranger, Jain Courtney in A Good Day to Die Hard, and Nicholas Hoult in Jack the Giant Slayer and Warm Bodies.

It’s a pretty impressive accomplishment, considering that Warner Bros. has only barely begun their marketing for Man of Steel. With only two trailers released, Henry Cavill’s performance as Superman seems to be impressing the general population just as much as it impressed comic book fans. The Man of Steel is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on June 14, 2013.

Helena Bonham Carter: The Lone Ranger begins filming in February with Johnny Depp as Tonto (Flicks and Bits)

The New Mexico Film Office has announced that Walt Disney Pictures’ ‘The Lone Ranger’ will start principal photography in New Mexico in February, with filming running until the middle of August. An outstanding cast has been assembled for the film, with Armie Hammer (The Social Network) taking on the role of the titular character and Johnny Depp portraying Tonto. The likes of Ruth Wilson, Dwight Yoakam, Helena Bonham Carter, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper, Tom Wilkinson and James Frain are set to co-star. The film, which takes place in 1869, is directed by Gore Verbinski for Walt Disney Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films. The plot-line is as follows; A Texas Ranger, left for dead, is saved by the Commanche Tonto, who gives his new partner the masked identity of Lone Ranger. ‘The Lone Ranger’ would mark Verbrinski and Depp’s fifth collaboration after the first three ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies and ‘Rango.’ ‘The Lone Ranger’ is scheduled to be released May 31st, 2013. Governor Susana Martinez and the New Mexico Film Office announced today that Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Johnny Depp, will begin principal photography in New Mexico in February 2012, with production planned in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Shiprock and other locations around the state through the middle of August 2012.

“The Lone Ranger is proof that New Mexico’s film industry is alive and well,” said Governor Martinez. “This administration is committed to fostering productive relationships with film studios so we can continue to offer our talented workforce and breathtaking backdrops for major productions. As we continue to build upon our reputation as a premier film production center, we are pleased to welcome The Lone Ranger to our state.”

State and local officials have been working with the Walt Disney Studios for over a year to bring the project to New Mexico.
