Rupert Penry-Jones requires persuasion

Ever since the great Tom Wilkinson admitted to me that there was an unwelcome lull in his career after he appeared in a television adaptation of one of Jeffrey Archer’s potboilers, actors have been inclined to think twice about such endeavours.
A case in point is Rupert Penry-Jones, who played Capt Wentworth in ITV’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. He has apparently been flattered that Jilly Cooper wants him to take on the part of her caddish character Rupert Campbell-Black in a series of television films that are being made out of her “bonkbusters”. He also needs sweet-talking before signing.
“I’m having lunch with him next week and hope to persuade him,” the evergreen Jilly told me at the Hennessy Gold Cup.
