The family have been evacuated to a remote manor house in Dorset, and are having a wonderful time until a mysterious blue present under their Christmas tree transports them to a dangerous forest. ‘We couldn’t help but be caught up in the Christmas spirit,’ says Matt Smith (right), who plays the Doctor. ‘We filmed in a forest with acres of snow. Twenty years after Edina, Patsy and the gang first staggered onto our screens, they’re back with the first of three new episodes written by and starring Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley. In true Ab Fab style, there’ll be lots of getting drunk and behaving badly. ‘Age is no bar to showing one’s knickers in public, as Patsy and Edina prove,’ says Jennifer. Comedy fans can also look forward to the Rev Christmas special (BBC2, 20 December), Lapland (ITV1, Christmas Eve) with Sue Johnston as a mother taking her family to the Arctic Circle, and The Royal Bodyguard (BBC1, Boxing Day), starring Sir David Jason.

It’s 1919 and Downton Abbey is hosting a lavish Christmas party. But tensions are rife, and Bates’s arrest for the murder of his ex-wife has cast a shadow over the festivities. Mary must consider her future with Sir Richard, and the Dowager Countess has concerns about her daughter Rosamund’s new suitor (played by Nigel Havers). There’s also a remake of The Borrowers (BBC1, Boxing Day), starring Stephen Fry and Victoria Wood. And hankies at the ready for Fast Freddie, The Widow And Me (ITV1, 27 December), in which a car dealer, played by Laurence Fox, gets more than he bargained for when he receives a community service order.

On a cold winter’s day, an 11-year-old orphan, Pip, runs into an escaped convict on the marshes near his home. The terrified boy helps the fugitive remove his shackles – an act of kindness which will have far-reaching consequences for them both. Gillian Anderson, Ray Winstone and David Suchet head the starstudded cast, in this three-part adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel. ‘It’s a fascinating, rollercoaster ride for my character,’ says Douglas Booth, who plays the adult Pip.
