EX-BEATLE Ringo Starr yesterday called for tougher sentences for anyone caught with guns — on the anniversary of bandmate John Lennon's murder.

Speaking at a Non-Violence Project Foundation event in London, the drumming legend said: "If you are caught with a gun it should be a higher sentence."

"Guns are just becoming more and more. They're like the death of choice. So we hope that young people will stop."

He also told of the "mad moment" he heard Lennon had been shot outside his New York apartment by
Mark Chapman in 1980.

Ringo said: "My stepchildren called saying 'Something has happened to John'. And you don't think 'He's been killed'.

"In the end they called me back and said 'John's been killed. He's been shot and he's dead'.

"You don't know what to do. You don't believe it really, but you know it's happening. It's just such a mad moment."

Wow! He's looks great for 71. Glad to read this post. Love the statue!
That day was such a shock for fans, but how much worse it must have been for people who knew him personally and cared for him.

Ringo was always my favorite when I was a kid - he seems a gentle soul. Nice that everyone remembers John. Thanks for the comment.
