Shame about Oscar snub
Michael Fassbender's Oscar snub is generating a lot of heat among Hollywood media types who believe the Killarney man's killer performance in Shame was overlooked for one rather unavoidable reason. As the folks at the LA Times report (under the punchy headline: "Oscar 2012 -- Did Michael Fassbender's big part cost him a nom?"), the actor's buzzed-about portrayal of a sex addict "has had tongues wagging since last fall, but as awards campaigning chugged along, some of the wagging moved from what was in his performance to what was in his underwear".
Ironically, George Clooney, who is heavily tipped to collect this year's Academy Award for Best Actor, is getting the most stick for shifting the focus from Michael's acting to his anatomical strengths.
Clooney's wisecrack, made during the Golden Globes, that Fassbender's physical assets are so formidable he must be able to play golf with his hands tied behind his back was, the LA Times notes, "an otherwise flattering endorsement that might be indi- cative of the mindset" that cost Fassbender his chance at the gold.
In reaction to the outrage against the snub that spilled out from fans, Entertainment Weekly magazine is predicting that Fassbender (who, after all, also delivered three other bravo 2011 performances in X-Men: First Class, Jane Eyre and A Dangerous Method) will be a presenter at the Oscars on February 26, when host Billy Crystal is bound to make a few "clever", "classy" gags about, as the Yanks so daintily put it, his "package".
