Benedict Cumberbatch: Watch Sherlock & Sherlock In New Trailer For ‘Frankenstein’ Coming Back To US Theaters Later This Year Written on March 4, 2012 by Matt (BRITSCENE)

Those trying to favor a Sherlock–Benedict Cumberbatch‘s or Jonny Lee Miller‘s–will have no encouragement this summer from the National Theatre. Its 2011 adaptation of Frankenstein cast each in both the Doctor and Creature roles, alternating every night.

A broadcast of the play returns to US cinema screens this summer as part of this year’s National Theatre Live program. Playwright Nick Dear adapts the Mary Shelley novel, and Danny Boyle (Trainspotting & Slumdog Millionaire) directs.

The play does an impressive job with its source material, using creative theatrics to illustrate Shelley’s imagery (see trailer below). Take, for example, the opening sequence which Ben Brantley described in the New York Times, “…the bloodied and naked Creature pushes through a membrane and into existence, has been staged as a brilliant, lonely ballet.”

However, Brantley does little more to tip the scale in either actor’s favor: “their approaches are just different enough to make you want to see both”; and, “in monster mode, the exceedingly buff Mr. Miller and Mr. Cumberbatch each register as a desperate housewife’s answered prayer.”
