Benedict Cumberbatch: 'Sherlock 2': Sleuth arouses attention with new equal By Bruce R. Miller (SCJ)

LOS ANGELES --

Lipstick, a pair of earrings and heels. That's all Lara Pulver wore in a scene in the new "Sherlock 2" series on PBS' "Masterpiece."

"I never faced that before," the "True Blood" actress says. "It was about three weeks into the shoot and it was a closed set -- just eight people." The film's director told her she could wear minimal covering "but it's going to take long to do. You have a choice. Either you can wear something and we shoot all day or you completely trust us."

Pulver went with trust. Standing naked in front of Benedict Cumberbatch (as the contemporary Sherlock Holmes), "the dynamics changed and I was the complete powerhead of the scene. And when you think of it that way, (nudity) is simply a device."

The scene, however, caused a flurry of attention and landed photos of Pulver in British newspapers. One paper said it was insulted about the nudity but then posted "three pictures of me naked. More kids under the age of 13 saw pictures of me in their newspaper than anyone did (on the show)."

Cumberbatch says that interest speaks to the show's allure. "We're a cultural talking point. That's why it made headlines, not because of what they're trying to make a headline. It's a compliment."
