Fellowes: Maggie Smith’s Downton Abbey character won’t be killed off (METRO)

As the oldest character in Downton Abbey, it was often felt that the Dowager Countess was at risk of being killed off by show bosses, after creator Julian Fellowes displayed a penchant for axing key characters in gruesome ways.

But now the award-winning writer has promised fans that the Dowager, played by Dame Maggie Smith, isn't at risk of being bumped off, ending speculation that the actress is on the verge of quitting the drama.

The Sun quotes Fellowes as saying: 'I’m happy to say the Dowager is not going to die.'

The writer added jokingly that even if Smith wanted to leave the show, he would write her out of Downton in such a way that a return would always be possible.

'Violet is going to live by the sea in case Maggie changes her mind,' he said.

And it seems that if Smith were to leave the hit ITV period drama, she would be sorely missed by her fellow cast members, with Allen Leech, who plays former chauffer Tom Branson in the show, singing her praises.

'She’s absolutely amazing. She’s really lovely,' he said.
