The actor, who played the Time Lord from 2005 to 2010, revealed that he thought his comeback to the series was never going to happen because having numerous doctors on screen might not have worked.
"The Doctor tend to lead every scene he is in and when you are sharing that out it becomes slightly different," he told SFX.
"You have a new relationship with that aspect of the character and that gives you fresh challenge to work on.
"For a long time I was starting to think it was never going to happen, so there was an element of surprise there. But the general concept [of a multi-Doctor story] was something I always expected."
