Benedict Cumberbatch Shows Off New Look While Skipping TIME 100 Gala, John Green Misses 'Sherlock' Selfie Opportunity

Benedict Cumberbatch was a no-show at last night’s TIME 100 Gala despite nabbing one of the coveted top spots. He was last spotted on Tuesday, rocking a new look – curly blonde hair and glasses – at the opening of new restaurant City Social in London.

Cumberbatch, 37, rocked a blue suit and tight white button up as he joined model David Gandy at the event.

Cumberbatch told CityAM he has a personal connection to the restaurant – it’s located in the former Natwest bank building, where he has filmed scenes for “Sherlock.”


“It’s a fantastic night, I’ve worked here before in fact – we filmed episode two of season one here,” Cumberbatch said.

He was certainly missed at the Time 100 Gala – author John Green told TIME that Cumberbatch was the person he most wanted to take a selfie with.

“Is Benedict Cumberbatch here?” he asked. “Then nobody.”

So why did Cumberbatch skip the Time 100 gala? Possibly he had a scheduling conflict – the magazine’s profile of him, written by Colin Firth, is certainly flattering:
