There's a new face to look forward to when award-winning period drama Downton Abbey returns to the small screen for a fourth series later this month.

Aberystwyth-born actor Tom Cullen , 28, joins the cast as the 'good-looking and charismatic' Lord Anthony Gillingham, an old friend of the Crawley family.

Tom, who was raised in Llandrindod Wells and Cardiff, is the new love interest of Lady Mary, left widowed when her husband, Matthew Crawley, was killed in a car crash in a dramatic episode that aired on Christmas Day.

Sherlock's key stars, including main man Benedict Cumberbatch were all spotted filming on the streets of Cardiff – alongside a new face... Martin Freeman’s long-term partner Amanda Abbington.

Watson star Freeman, Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch and his on-screen brother Mark Gatiss were all seen with Abington filming the third series of the hit BBC detective drama in the Cathays Park area of the city.

It is understood the stars are filming the last of the three episodes in the series, which is called His Last Vow and is expected to feature Watson’s wedding.

Freeman appeared to manage several changes of clothes, swapping from a warm woolly cardigan to a fur-lined jacket and on to a summery pair of shorts, short-sleeved top and scandals.

Cumberbatch was seen emerging from his trailer in a dressing gown.

WATCH: ‘DOCTOR WHO’ STAR MATT SMITH CARRIES THE OLYMPIC FLAME By Kevin Wicks | Posted on Saturday, May 26th, 2012 (BBC AMERICA)

As we teased yesterday, Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith, in full tracksuit glory, carried the Olympic Torch in Cardiff today, completing a leg in the relay from BBC Wales’ Roath Lock Studios (where Who is filmed) to the Sennedd. A massive crowd turned out up at 6:29 am UK time to cheer Smith on. “I love the whole sense of the Olympics,” Matt said. “I mean it’s so early in the morning but there are so many people here with bunting and there’s a great atmosphere and everything’s so celebratory… I’m excited to be part of it!”

Doctor Who’s timeless appeal takes fans into a new dimension (THE PENNY POST)

BY PENNYPOST · MARCH 26, 2012 ·

They came from the US, from Australia, from Germany and all parts of the UK – and a few visited from galaxies beyond ours. Wearing bow ties and tweed jackets, odd hats and home-made Dalek dresses, the Time Lord’s most fervent fans gathered in Wales this weekend for the first official Doctor Who convention since the show’s 2005 relaunch.

Appropriately, for a television series about time travel, much of the talk was about the future, chiefly the imminent replacement of the Doctor’s companion Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan, by former Emmerdale actor Jenna-Louise Coleman. Matt Smith, who plays the 11th incarnation of the Doctor, admitted he would miss Gillan and her on-screen husband, played by Arthur Darvill, as they had become “two of my closest friends”.

“I’m really sad but the thing with Doctor Who is that you have to keep moving, or the show will leave you behind, it’s that fast. I’m looking forward to working with Jenna, but I will really miss them as we have a real laugh together.” The dynamism described by Smith is widely credited with reviving the fortunes of the science fiction series since it was brought out of hibernation seven years ago.

And if proof were needed that the Doctor had successfully rematerialised at the heart of British culture, the £99-a-head convention in Cardiff, billed as the ultimate Doctor Who fan event, did the job. “Yes, we came especially for this.

We love Doctor Who, we love Matt Smith and we couldn’t resist it, so we planned a holiday around it,” said Lula Stratton, 39, from Chicago, who came with her husband and brother-in-law and was carrying armfuls of T-shirts and a giant autograph book. “We’ll be doing a tour of the filming sites around Wales later.”
