The Most Hysterical (Spoiler-Free) Overseas Reactions to Downton Abbey’s Shocking Plot Twist by Julie Miller 4:45 PM, OCTOBER 15 2012 (VANITY FAIR)
Like an illicit lover prohibited from entering the emergency room during her paramour’s surgery, American Downton Abbey fans have been forced to sit in an adjacent waiting room (the U.S.) while their beloved period drama undergoes a series of critical ups and downs (also: rumored weddings and possible baby-proofing nightmares) on British television—with the only major clues to season three’s prognoses coming from U.K. viewers’ yelps and cries overheard inside (on Twitter).
“Crying actual buckets #Downton”
“Oh my gosh...I’ve never cried so much at a tv programme. Downton abbey. You have ruined me.”
“@DowntonAbbey: Happy #DowntonDay!#Downton pic.twitter.com/GxH0ygYb // You are BREAKING MY HEART.”
“I feel utterly broken after that episode of Downton. The saddest yet. Maggie Smith's performance right at the end was heart-wrenching.”
