According to sources, Tom Hardy is a shoo-in for the much sought after role, because of his less than six degrees of separation connection to the now unspeakably rich and famous "mommie porn" author. A 50 Shades of Grey director has yet to be chosen, but the screenwriter is Kelly Marcel who is James' choice. Marcel and Hardy are longtime BFFs. They even founded a London theater company together. Also, James has strong ties to British theater--especially Shakespearean theater where Hardy "cut his teeth and honed his acting chops." And finally, Hardy is, like E. L. James, British.
So, there you have it. Of course, being British and having a theatrical background won't necessarily help in the Fifty Shades of Grey sweepstakes. Robert Pattinson who's from a similar background lost out miserably in the most recent polls. Tom Hardy's name has yet to be even listed in one, but maybe that's a good thing.
