Dublin’s North Great George's Street witnessed dramatic scenes of ‘Ripper Street’ season two filming this week, with one character getting thrown from a window and impaled through the leg on a railing.

By contrast, cast and crew members - including stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg - were in high spirits, and a crash mat was laid under the scene of the wounded police detective (and uninjured stuntman) left hanging upside down.

Bafta-nominated for Best Drama series earlier this month, ‘Ripper Street’ returned to Clancy Barracks at the end of April for principal photography on its second 8-part series before moving to the Natural History Museum on Merrion Row and other Dublin locations in the weeks since.

The Whitechapel-set crime thriller, set in the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper killings in 1889, will wrap filming in Dublin on 31st August and return to BBC screens in 2014.

Yet 78-year-old Dame Judi Dench has revealed an unlikely penchant for a different kind of shoot.

The Skyfall actress, who has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Baftas this evening, said it was "thrilling" to fire a gun as part of her training for the role of M in the James Bond films.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr show, she told of her invitation to Shed 19 in Buckinghamshire's Pinewood Studios, which is normally used for training stunt professionals.

She told interviewer Sophie Raworth: "I got into Shed 19. And Shed 19's where you learn to shoot a gun.
"You get in to hold a ... you know ... and you start firing at things. It's thrilling. It's thrilling because it's pretend."

Judi Dench also revealed her reaction to the news of the demise of her character in Skyfall.


She said: "I was told that very, very early on so I could get rid of the kind of peeved face and start smiling and nodding and saying, yes of course."

"I didn't feel peeved at all. Mind you, when I come to do the next one I shall hang around trying to put the boot into Ralph Fiennes."

Judi Dench also said that her last role in the Bond films was an emotional experience.

She said: "I think I was emotional when they actually said 'cut!', and they said that’s it, thanks very much.
"I think I was quite emotional then and we all had a drink and a big cake and everything – that was the emotional bit."

"Downton Abbey" may be a phenomenon in the U.S., but that doesn't necessarily translate into awards back in its native Britain. The series, currently shooting its third season, picked up just one British Academy of Film and Television Arts nomination on Tuesday, but it's one that counts: Maggie Smith, who plays the dowager countess, was nominated for supporting actress.

It's Smith's fourth BAFTA TV nomination, but she's never won. (She has won five BAFTAs for her film work, however). The fact that she's the only member of the cast to get a nomination underlines something "Masterpiece" executive producer Rebecca Eaton told PBS supporters in Florida earlier this month (as reported by the Orlando Sentinel): "Maggie Smith is a handful, it's true. She's very difficult. She knows her worth, and she's tricky on the set, but she delivers when the time comes."
