Ray Stevenson reveals his panic after flooring Hollywood hardman The Rock during filming for GI Joe: Retaliation (DAILY RECORD)

MOVIE star Ray Stevenson has revealed his panic after accidentally flooring Hollywood hardman The Rock.

The 48-year-old, who featured in hit TV series Rome, thought his uppercut might have broken the champion wrestler’s nose.

The two heavyweight actors had been swapping punches for a fight scene in big-budget romp GI Joe: Retaliation, which also stars Elodie Yung and Adrianne Palicki.

Ray has told how, even though the bruising tussle with The Rock – whose real name is Dwayne Johnson – was as tightly choreographed as a dance, slips still happened.

He said: “The worst moment was when we filmed the first big fight. I spun round and accidentally caught him right across the bridge of his nose.

“I drew blood and I was worried. But Dwayne just shrugged it off. He was great about it and just said, ‘These things happen.’”

Ray, who was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, joins the GI Joe film franchise as explosive villain Firefly, while The Rock plays Roadblock, a vital member of the GI Joe elite fighting force.

Ray accepted from the start that bumps and bruises were inevitable during the creation of realistic action sequences.

He said: “Dwayne and I went for it and we did clip each other a couple of times.

“His arms are the size of my thighs and, when he blocked my fist, it was like hitting an iron bar. I was black and blue with bruises.”

We know that fancying the villain in a series is not usually the done thing but Ray Stevenson is making us a little swoony in the new season of Dexter.

The Irish actor plays Isaak Sirko, the mob boss that makes Dexter’s life a misery over the course of the seventh season. He also has the Miami Metro Homicide Division in his sights. Ooo he’s an evil bugger.

/Ray’s been in loads of stuff over the years including Rome, Thor and The Three Musketeers. He’s definitely a bit of a silver fox and sometimes we prefer an older man.

Ray Stevenson: Episode Review: Dexter – “Argentina” JJ MILLER NOVEMBER 21, 2012 (BASED ON NOTHING)

With disappointment over last week’s “Chemistry” still lingering over me, much like a rain cloud does over a crestfallen cartoon character, I flipped on this week’s episode of Dexter (the somewhat cryptically titled “Argentina”) with little enthusiasm and even less expectation of a good episode of television. The episode begins much as any other episode has done in the past, with Dexter and his new girlfriend Hannah chatting over a nice breakfast about the many people they have killed and the ways in wh- Wait. Serial killers talking about homicide over breakfast as if it were yesterday’s news? My interest is piqued (well done Dexter writers), although I’m still not convinced of “Argentina’s” quality. How could I be? After all, it’s only five minutes into the episode.

Cut to Isaak Sirko, who is again out for blood. This time, he manages to fire a few shots in Dex’s direction while our hero(?) is casually picking up his morning doughnuts. How rude. Luckily, Sirko only manages to assassinate a couple iced crullers as his aim seems to have grown slightly rusty during his abbreviated stint in the big house. After nearly losing his head at the doughnut shop, Dexter gets a call from his ex-wife’s parents who have been looking after his young son Harrison. This only serves to complicate Dexter’s life further, as Harrison must return to Miami due to unforeseen circumstances involving Dexter’s father-in-law and a wayward gallstone. Perhaps (definitely) even more unfortunate is the fact that both Astor and Cody, Dex’s step-children, will be accompanying Harrison on the visit. Despite the inconvenient nature of their arrival in Miami, including Astor and Cody in “Argentina” is a welcome connection to Dexter seasons past. For whatever reason, their presence gives the episode a sense of credibility and again I feel I’m being whisked away to the sunny, scary Miami haunted by the Ice Truck Killer.

As I’m being whisked away by these feelings of warm nostalgia, LaGuerta decides she really, really can’t leave well enough alone and decides to dig even further into the closed Bay Harbor Butcher murder cases. She still isn’t convinced her former beau, Sgt. James Doakes (who, lest we forget was also a member of Miami Metro Homicide) acted as the notorious murderer. Her incessant investigation has led her to some long forgotten marina records which unfortunately link Dexter to the BHB murders. She seems to have put all the pieces together and her discovery is looking like it is going to be the highlight of the episode when… BAM! Debra decides this week is the perfect time to tell Dexter she is in love with him.

Yes, you read that right. Debra has admitted to having romantic feelings for her serial killer brother, further proving theirs is the most dysfunctional brother-sister relationship of all time. Dexter, proving yet again he is world’s greatest compartmentalizer, decides this is the perfect time to go kill Isaak.

To be fair, after a revelation like that, you’d want to blow off some steam too. Can’t blame the guy.

Dex stalks Sirko all the way to a swanky bar, which seems relatively deserted. Curiosity gets the better of him and Dexter ends up bar-side with the very man who ruined his Boston Kremes earlier that morning. Again pushing the limits of his curiosity, Dex questions Isaak as to just why he would so casually venture into such a bar at such a time (when so many people want him dead). Isaak responds by casually asking Dexter to take a look around. He does.

It’s a gay bar.

In just a few episodes, Isaak Sirko (Ray Stevenson) is making a serious case for the title of Dexter’s Baddest Villain.

Season 7 got one episode older last night with “Swim Deep,” which managed to take the tension to levels unseen since Season 4.

Not wasting a minute with filler storylines, Episode 5 saw Deb continuing to figure out which way her moral compass points, Hannah (inadvertently) outing herself (to Dexter) that she was just as murderous as her partner Wayne and Stevenson channeling The Punisher as he went Max Payne on a bar full of rival gang members.

The squeeze is on for Dexter and it doesn’t appear as if even he is deft enough to elude everything closing in on him.

Ray Stevenson: ‘Dexter’ season 7 spoilers: The new villains speak out! (CARTER)

In a new behind-the-scenes video released by Showtime below, you can see for the first time Stevenson and Gedrick talking about the joy that they had taking on these roles, and just about how secretive the filming process has been for them in comparison to some other shows. There is also a tiny bit of new footage in this video, though we cannot fully say that it is anything that will make you salivate. Really, it feels like a similar sort of communication you would expect from Dexter now that Isaac knows what he has been up to.



Although we are still unsure as to whether or not they are the only villains on this season of “Dexter,” there is no denying at the moment that Ukrainian mob boss Isaac (Ray Stevenson) and George (Jason Gedrick) are very bad dudes. They’ve been involved in the show’s story from the beginning courtesy of a case all around a gentleman’s club, and things are about to get far worse than ever now that Dexter has more or less implicated himself as the killer of Viktor, one of Isaac’s close friends who was responsible for taking the life of one of the dancers.

Dexter Guest Star: Ray Stevenson

One of the guest stars who will join this 7th season is none other than Ray Stevenson. He will be playing the head of a Russian crime syndicate who arrives in Miami determined to find out who killed one of his associates. For now, this is all I can say about his role but let me further give you more info’s about who he is in real life.

George Raymond "Ray" Stevenson was born on May 25, 1964. He is an Irish film and television actor. He is best known for playing Titus Pullo in the television series Rome (2005–2007), and in film as Dragonet in King Arthur (2004) and as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Punisher: War Zone (2008) and The Super Hero Squad Show.

He made his debut in The Theory of Flight (1998) with Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter, where he played the part of a gigolo hired to help Bonham Carter's character to lose her virginity. He was in other films including The Theory of Flight, The Vampires Assistant, The Book of Eli, The Other Guys, Kill the Irishman, The Three Musketeers, Thor, and Thor The Dark World and a lot more.

What can you tell us about the new cast members?

Colleton: We have Ray Stevenson, who — oh my God — he is such a fantastic actor. He plays the head of a crime syndicate who owns many nightclubs in Miami. Jason Gedrick plays George, the U.S. manager of all of his clubs. Ray Stevenson's character, Isaac, comes to Miami when his very close personal lieutenant is accused of killing a Miami cop and then suddenly disappears. So Isaac wants to find out what happened to his friend and how he disappeared. The fact that it was a cop will bring them all around the Miami Metro police system. That is going to be a long story arc.

Ray Stevenson, Game of Thrones: TOP 10: MOST BADASS TELEVISION CHARACTERS OF THE PAST DECADE BY KEVEN SKINNER PUBLISHED: JUNE 19, 2012 - 10:51AM (DAILY BLAM)

Television has not only improved drastically the past decade but I've noticed an increase in anti-heroes. Or badasses, to be blunt. When coming up with this list, I took into account the many levels of badassness and varying degress of badassery it takes to bring such memorable characters to the small screen in a big way. This meant taking into consideration psychological violence as well as physical mayhem. One can be a badass and not lift a finger, or you can be a badass and chop someone in half with a sword. The important aspect of a ranked badass list takes into careful consideration all aspects of the title.

Six of the below TV shows featuring badasses are still airing with new episodes and the remainder are all current enough that I could exclude Tom Selleck, Mr. T, Chuck Norris and Kramer. I kept it nice and relevant so enjoy and feel free to debate the following list of television's most badass characters.

#9. Rory McCann as The Hound (Sandor Clegane) in Game of Thrones

I had ruled 'The Hound' out of this list until I saw episode 9 of season two, 'Blackwater'. There has been a plethora of badassness throughout both seasons of HBO's dark fantasy drama, but it wasn't until The Hound lost his s*** during the epic battle of Blackwater on the second season that I realized he's the standout of the show. In the source material, The Hound is more outspoken than his TV counterpart, so his on-screen demeanor is more of a silent menace. [Check out the rape rescue sequence in which The Hound guts some thugs in an alley without saying a word to know precisely what I mean.]

Why he's a badass: The disfigured knight is tough as nails despite his fear of flames and the violence he unleashes on that beach in Blackwater is terrifying. He literally chops foes in half with his sword. In the end he also tells the dickhead king Joffrey to go "F*** himself" before abandoning what he deems a lost cause. On a show with so many 'bad' characters, The Hound seems to be the one true badass.

#7. Ray Stevenson as Titus Pullo in Rome

The short lived HBO series Rome was historically accurate. By historically accurate I mean savage and very brutal. The most violence exhibited on-screen stemmed from Ray Stevenson's Titus. The former Roman soldier struggled to fit into society after being discharged from service and ended up becoming an assassin for a crime syndicate, but he didn't need money to kill. More times than not, Titus would drunkenly murder someone in a bar fight anyway.

Why he's a badass: The gladiator sequence at the end of season one is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on TV. After Titus is imprisoned and facing death in the arena, his emotional comeback and fight for survival solidifies him as a hero and righteous badass of epic proportions. I would have to assume Stevenson's film career exists because of these scenes. Throughout the course of the series Titus smashes people's skulls with his bare hands and strangles women to death, proving his ferocity holds no bounds.

Ray Stevenson: 'Dexter' Adds Swedish Actress for Sexy, Recurring Role (THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER)

Showtime's Dexter is apparently going to be spending a lot of time at a strip club in its upcoming seventh season.

The Michael C. Hall-Jennifer Carpenter starrer has enlisted Swedish actress Katia Winter to play a Russian stripper who works at a Miami club, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.


As first reported by TVLine, Winter will join the serial killer drama in a major recurring role, joining Season 7 newbies Jason Gedrick -- who will play the manger of the same Miami strip club -- and Ray Stevenson, who has been cast as the leader of a Russian organized crime syndicate.

Premiering Sept. 30 at 9 p.m., production on Season 7 of Dexter began this month in Los Angeles and will feature the Miami club linked to a high profile murder case as the season's central case.

Ray Stevenson Interview by David Fletcher (INDEPENDENT FILM QUARTERLY)

Ray Stevenson first came on the scene as the lead in HBO’s Rome. Since then, he has managed a steady stream of work as a vital part of ensemble casts in Cirque du Freak, Book of Eli and The Other Guys.

In March, Anchor Bay released Kill the Irishman –the true story of Danny Greene (played by Stevenson), a tough Irish thug working for mobsters in Cleveland during the 1970s. In May he will star as Volstagg in Paramount’s Thor and then in the Fall as Porthos in Summit’s 3D The Three Musketeers. It’s confirmed: 2011 is the Year of Ray Stevenson.

Independent Film Quarterly’s David Fletcher recently sat down with Ray Stevenson inside his suite at The London Hotel in West Hollywood, CA.

IFQ: Can you tell me a little bit about your character in Kill the Irishman?

Ray Stevenson:  Danny Greene! When I first read the script, I thought something resonated. I heard this story before somewhere. Then I remembered three or four years previous, I saw American Mobsters. This particular episode was about Danny Greene. I remembered the live footage, the bits of Shondor Birns car after his demise, and Cleveland at that time and tracking his life. It’s such an amazing slice of Americana. It was a period when cars didn’t get any bigger, lapels didn’t get bigger, mustaches didn’t get bigger. Actually, the criminals didn’t get any bigger. Danny Greene was larger than life. He used to wear a Lincoln green suite and green pants. He was in your face. What you saw was what you got. After this period, everything went a bit more sophisticated, underground and unseen.

IFQ: I grew up in the New York/New Jersey area and there is a large Irish American presence there, as well as Boston, etc. Were you aware that Cleveland had this type of Irish mafia going on?

RS: No. I didn’t. In fact, in the story it was Italian mafia run and out of New York, Detroit, Cleveland, that whole sort of sweep right up to Montreal. What I love about the story is that it’s a man’s journey; it’s a criminal’s journey. He’s a villain; he’s a mobster; he’s a racketeer, but aspiring to affiliate himself with the mafia and becoming the head of the Longshoremen’s union. He rounded up Irish American affiliates and set up his Irish crew and literally went to war with the Italian mafia on the streets and turned Cleveland into the bomb capital of the U.S. in ’77. 32 or 37 bombs went off. These were serious car bombs and there was blood on the streets. It’s such a slice of that period in American culture and history.
