Poldark heart-throb Aidan Turner has revealed he put on a stone as soon as the show ended and is now “too fat and hairy” to get his top off.

The actor, who stripped off for the now infamous scything scene, also said he knew his technique was wrong but stuck with it to add to the drama.

Aidan, 31, said the effort that went in to creating his renowned six-pack was enormous. “It’s quite hard work to get into that sort of shape.

“Towards the end, I was so sick of it - I wanted to stuff my face. I think I put on a stone straight away.”

He claimed that fans would be “so disappointed” if he bared his torso now.

“I’m way too hairy,” he laughed. “If I went to the beach right now, people wouldn’t recognise me. I think keeping my top on these days is probably a good idea. I’m in nothing like the shape I was.

“People are just, ‘Hey - where’s your six-pack?’ I’m like, ‘I’m fat now - what are you talking about?’”

But the hunky star plans to hit the gym once again before filming on the second series starts in September.

Aidan entirely agrees with the scything experts who criticised his efforts. For the episode, he took lessons from a pro who said it should be more of a gentle twisting motion than massing slashing.

But he laughed: “Can you imagine if that was the scene? I was getting f***ing stuck in and every time I was doing it, I could see him shaking his head and turning away.

Six million viewers tuned in to the emotional final episode of Poldark last night - and lamented the end of the first series.

The finale featured the sudden death of Poldark and Demelza's baby daughter Julia and ended with a cliffhanger which will run in to the second series.

The episode peaked with 6.1 million viewers on BBC1, winning its 9pm slot.

It averaged 5.9 million and a 25.4% share of viewers - more than last week but not matching the heights of the first episode - which secured almost seven million.



The installment left many viewers in tears.

"I went to bed with tears streaming. Harrowing but superbly acted," Jo Cooper wrote on Twitter.

Fiona Rose McGregor wrote: "I need a bucket for my tears."

The finale attracted warm reviews, with Allison Pearson in The Daily Telegraph saying that it was "hard to remember a more emotionally pummelling hour of television drama".

On Digital Spy, Cameron K McEwan wrote that it was "a brave move to have such a cheerless finale, but the emotional resonance amid the events of this packed 60 minutes will reward fans immeasurably."

Ellen E Jones wrote in The Independent: "Poldark is not a sophisticated drama, but the simple things can sometimes be very satisfying."

Jim Shelley wrote on MailOnline: "There was only one way the nation's swooning viewers could find brooding, pouting, heartthrob Ross Poldark any more irresistible - make him Tragic. So it proved in the final episode of the swashbuckling Seventies revival."

The BBC is planning a second series of the Cornish saga.

The makers of Poldark have insisted they had to make Aidan Turner remove his top for key scenes in the period drama, in order to keep it true to the book.

Damien Timmer, one of the BBC show’s executive producers, said the memorable scenes were “pretty innocent”, and merely recreated the storyline laid out by author Winston Graham.

“Aidan has that integrity in the way he plays Ross, he commits to it so completely, he is Ross in all of his complex brooding,” he told the Radio Times.

When asked about the actor’s regular “shirtlessness”, he added: “Honestly, we were pretty innocent about the shirt taking-off stuff.

“No, really, Ross does it in the book, he goes swimming, he washes himself clean. And he’s a farmer, and it’s very hot in Cornwall! Besides, we didn’t audition him with his clothes off.”

His comments came after viewers complained about Sunday night's penultimate episode in the BBC1 series, because Turner kept all his clothes on.

One wrote on Twitter: "I miss half naked Aidan Turner."

Swoonsome Sunday night period drama Poldark has all the ingredients of a sure-fire hit: ridiculously attractive cast members, beautiful, wild Cornish seascapes and a compelling love triangle at its heart, driving the action forward.

So, it’s no wonder that the series – based on Winston Graham’s acclaimed novels – has attracted in excess of 6.5 million viewers each week since it began in early March.



Now, with just three episodes left in the series, the question on everyone’s lips is whether its darkly handsome protagonist Captain Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) will remain faithful to his flame-haired former kitchen maid wife Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson), or be swayed by his childhood sweetheart Elizabeth (Heida Reed).

“I think Ross and Demelza are very similar personalities and along the way she makes Ross notice that his relationship with Elizabeth would never have worked as they are not alike,” reflects actress Eleanor, 22.

“Ross and Demelza are cut from the same rock; Demelza is equally as fiery as Ross and puts him in his place, but at the same time they just understand each other’s moods.”

Indeed, in recent weeks viewers have seen Poldark find true happiness with Demelza. He declared his love for her, saying that she was his saviour, and last week the birth of their daughter, Julia, brought them even closer together.

Yet he still finds himself inexplicably drawn to his former love, Elizabeth, going as far as telling his cousin Verity (Ruby Bentall) that he would be happiest if he could have them both

Poldark gets second series after ratings help BBC1 to 10-year high

The BBC is recomissioning Poldark for a second series after the period drama helped BBC1 record its highest ratings share for the first three months of the year in a decade.

The BBC’s flagship channel took a 23.3% share of viewers overall and 25.2% during peak times, helped by strong performances from EastEnders, Six Nations rugby, new comedy Still Open All Hours and the corporation’s prime-time dramas.

Poldark’s consolidated viewing across the season so far has hit 8.1 million.

The series starring Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson will return for an eight-part run covering books three and four of Winston Graham’s series, as will screenwriter Debbie Horsfield.

In an interview with the Guardian last month, Horsfield said she had already begun adapting more episodes of the drama about a soldier returning to Cornwall from the American War of Independence.

Another BBC prime-time drama, Call the Midwife, averaged 10.3 million viewers, making it the most watched drama series across all channels so far this year.

He shared: "She is very honest with him. She'll say, 'I'm doing this scene', and if he's worried about it, they talk about it. She is very upfront and honest."

Eleanor - who previously starred alongside 'Godzilla' actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson in 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging - admits her new co-star has a "great body" but insists her boyfriend, who works in the film industry, isn't too jealous about them getting up close and personal.

In Ross Poldark, we have reached romantic hero nirvana

Stripped to the waist, his pecs lightly furred, a faint, photogenic sheen of sweat delineating his six-pack, the sun glinting on his dark Byronic tumble of curls, the classic patrician lines of his face given distinction by the devilish scar that lovingly caressed one sharp cheekbone, Captain Ross Poldark treated the nation to some hot scything action on Sunday night – and the nation did swoon. By the time Poldark, aka Aidan Turner, had saved a misguided young poacher from transportation, gainfully employed the local peasantry by reopening his father’s mine, then bedded and wedded Demelza, his flighty young serving girl, Twitter was a’twitter with love for the kind of romantic hero that has been absent from our screens for far too long.



Not since Colin Firth, as one Fitzwilliam Darcy, strode purposefully out of the lake at Pemberley, his white shirt clinging to the planes of his chest, have Sunday nights been such a treat.

In Ross Poldark we have reached romantic hero nirvana. Whether he is straddling different social classes or his stallion, it is always with the same mastery. He has the life experience that can only come from fighting in a war then returning home to find his father dead, the family tin mine all but derelict and his one true love married off to his doughty cousin. He’s equally at home in the drawing rooms of the gentry as he is supping cider in the fields with the great unwashed. He has contempt for those who are rich only by accident of birth and knows how to perform all manner of household tasks. He’s part alpha male, part metrosexual, all combined in one HD-ready, smouldering package.



Now, compare Poldark to that other romantic hero of our age, Christian Grey. Grey’s deep inner turmoil comes from the kind of mummy issues so basic that even a GCSE psychology student would roll their eyes at them. He may be suited and booted, but in the box office-busting adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey, with every extraneous hair felled from his body, Grey looks disturbingly pre-pubescent for a tortured torturer. Even more disturbing is that Jamie Dornan looked sexier playing a serial killer in The Fall than he ever did when he was getting down to some sexy slapping in the Red Room.

There’s something incredibly reductive and old-fashioned about the pumped-up posturing of the BDSM-lite billionaire. It harks back to the days when steamy bodice-rippers featured brutish heroes and love scenes that bordered on rape – the kind of romances that have long fallen out of favour with the readers of romantic historical fiction, who now prefer the more considered and contemporary novels of writers like Courtney Milan, Stephanie Laurens and Elizabeth Hoyt. Their heroines have backbone, their heroes aren’t autocratic arseholes, and any bodice-ripping is entirely consensual.

Aidan Turner's girlfriend denies she is engaged

Aidan Turner's fans were having meltdowns last week when rumours circulated the actor had secretly popped the question to his long-term girlfriend Sarah Greene. They no doubt breathed a sigh of relief this week, however, when the Irish beauty revealed she and Aidan are not in fact planning a wedding.

She made the denial when spotted out and about in Dublin, having attended the JDIFF's Expressing Emotion: Actors in Conversation event with her beau.

"I'm not engaged," said Sarah, as reported by Goss.ie. Photographers had flocked to the event to capture the first photos of Sarah's engagement ring, but were left disappointed when they saw the actress' bare left hand.



Aidan and Sarah, who have kept their three-year romance largely out of the spotlight, were recently at the centre of engagement reports.

A source told the Sunday Express that the couple are "really close and happy" and that "marriage is the logical next step for them" – leaving some to jump to the conclusion that Aidan had secretly proposed over the Christmas holidays.

Speaking to HELLO! magazine in this week's issue, the handsome The Hobbit star admitted that he was "out of the loop" and unaware of the frenzy he has caused among his army of female fans.

"Is that a real thing?" Aidan laughed, when asked if he'd heard of Turner Fever. "Oh dear. I don't know anything about that. Sounds frightening though. I don't do social media and stuff so maybe I'm slightly out of the loop to a degree."

Aidan admitted that he doesn't read much about himself and the attention he spurs, especially online. "People don't tell me a lot of it either," he said. "My friends are under strict instructions not to tell me anything so I rarely hear of it, but I get a giggle when I do."

Poldark fans disappointed as Aidan Turner 'engaged to be married'

He has caused something of a stir among the women of Britain for his rugged role in Poldark.

But hopeful fans of Aidan Turner could be left somewhat disappointed, after it emerged he has become secretly engaged to his long-term girlfriend.

Turner, 31, has reportedly proposed to actress Sarah Greene after three happy years together.

The Sunday Express claims rumours in the couple's home town of Dublin suggest they agreed to wed after spening Christmas with Turner's parents.

A source quoted by the newspaper said: "They are a really close and happy couple, and marriage is the logical next step for them.

"Sarah is perfect for him, she's very protective. Both of them don't really go for the glitzy side of showbusiness; they're happier spending quiet evenings playing Scrabble."

Turner is currently appearing in BBC period drama Poldark as the gallant Ross, who returned from war to find his true love engaged to another man.

Over the first three episodes, he has gained legions of female fans for scenes which see him galloping across Cornwall on horseback and working topless in the field.

Poldark tipped to become ‘BBC’s answer to Downton Abbey’ as second series ‘almost certain’ to go ahead

Speculation over Poldark’s future has mounted further following reports that a second series of the show is looking increasingly likely – and that its star Aidan Turner can ‘name his price’.

According to the Mirror insiders at the BBC have said it is ‘almost certain’ new episodes will begin filming in Cornwall later this year, with execs potentially planning to keep the show on air for several years.

And as the inevitable Downton Abbey comparisons begin to surface, one source told the paper that the corporation was prepared to dig deep to keep the show’s star on board.

‘Aidan has become a huge hit with viewers,’ the source said. ‘The role of Ross Poldark has put him in the shop window and movie makers from Hollywood will be beating down his door.

‘Without Aidan there is no Poldark. There is a real feeling it could turn in to a long-running series.’

Nothing has been confirmed, of course, although the actor previously hinted that a second series is in the works after saying he would be returning to Cornwall, where the show was filmed, later this year.

As Captain Ross Poldark, he’ll be providing plenty of (often shirtless...) entertainment, so there’s no better time to brush up on the facts.

The 31-year-old actor has previously appeared in a number of TV shows and trod the boards in numerous Shakespeare plays, but which films do you know him from? And which racy period drama gave Aidan his big break?

Find out everything you need to know with these 9 facts in 90 seconds…

1. The Irish actor was 23 when he first appeared on TV

Let's start with the basics, shall we? Aidan was born in Dublin in 1983, and he graduated from The Gaiety School of Acting in 2003.

After appearing in a number of plays, he was given his big break with 2007, when he won a guest role in 'The Tudors'.

2. Here's where you've seen him before

You probably recognise him from 'The Hobbit' films, in which he played the dwarf Kili (on the right).

The films' director Peter Jackson added the character of Tauriel, who isn't in the books, and created the franchise's key romantic storyline. (That's not Tauriel in the photo by the way, non-Hobbit fans, it's Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.)




3. Aidan doesn't understand why people think he's hot

We know, right?!

Aidan wasn't best pleased when the BBC released this behind-the-scenes snap, and he told Newsbeat: "I don't know why the BBC are releasing photos of it. It's a bit strange."




6. Aidan gets starstruck just like us

He's previously revealed how daunting it was to film 'The Hobbit' with Ian McKellen, and now, he's opened up about what it was like when Robin Ellis, the original Poldark, stopped by for a cameo.

"We had this scene together when we’d just started filming – a scene where Robin is a judge at a trial," he explained to The Telegraph. "After we’d filmed the scene, Robin turned to me and gave me a wink and a thumbs up."

8. We'll be seeing him half-naked a LOT

The actor has promised that he gets his kit-off multiple times in the series, not that we're counting or anything.

Aidan spent an awful lot of time in the gym while filming, and he's previously stated: "I hate the gym. Working all day and then doing 90 minutes in the gym is a pain, but it's part of the job."

Poldark caught the British public's attention last week – and hunky star Aiden Turner appeared to have a lot to do with it. And he's probably going to keep the viewing figures high among a certain demographic after tonight's bit of skinny-dipping off the Cornish coast. It brought to mind Colin Firth's wet-shirt stint as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice back in the 1990s.

Reheating an old 1970s classic can be risky, but it seems as if bringing Poldark back has paid off for the BBC with women swooning and men seeming to enjoy the old-fashioned nature of the 18th century drama.

For its second episode on Sunday on BBC One, the question was whether Poldark will cement its place in the viewing schedule of the public, or whether people's interest would wane.

Judging by the Twitter reaction, it's probably got another series at least to come.

As we know from last week, poor old Ross Poldark (Turner, seen recently in The Hobbit trilogy and before that in the BBC's Being Human) has returned to Cornwall in 1783 from fighting in the American War of Independence to a rather flat homecoming.



His dad is dead and his lover Elizabeth (Heida Reed) is engaged to his drippy cousin Francis (Kyle Soller).

His family's old Cornish tin mine is in rack and ruin and it all looks as if he would be better heading off to London, as suggested by his uncle Charles Poldark (the late Warren Clarke)

But as chance would have it, a young 'child' he rescues from a dog-fight gone wrong, turns out to be the rather fetching (and very much a woman) pouty Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson).

Cue the setting up of a love triangle between heart-broken Ross being intrigued by wild Demelza while prim Elizabeth is wed to Francis but clearly still in love with her ex, who she had feared dead.

So far, so wearingly predictable - even if it is all set against beautiful scenery with the wind gently blowing through the actors' hair.

And in the second episode, last week's strands were picked up.

Heartthrob Aidan Turner’s long-term girlfriend has issued a firm “hands off – he’s mine” warning to his legion of new fans.

The Irish star of BBC costume drama Poldark has set millions of hearts fluttering with his smouldering lead performance as Ross – a man torn between two women.

But in real life he is very much in love with his girlfriend of three years, Irish actress Sarah Greene.

And protective Sarah has sent a clear message to anyone with designs on her man – steer clear because he’s off the market.

A friend said: “Sarah will stand no nonsense from any woman who tries to get too close to Aidan. She will let them know very directly ‘hands off – he’s mine’.”

Sarah, 29, who divides her time between Dublin, London and New York, also fiercely guards her privacy and private life.

And she isn’t afraid of confronting anyone who is “rude enough” to invade their personal space.

She said: “My boyfriend was on the Tube and people started taking pictures of him asleep. It’s like, ‘Ask for a photo if you want a photo.’

"Everyone is paparazzi these days. I have a private life and I want that to be private. The odd time in New York you find people taking pictures of you, it’s really rude.”

Friends of the Cork star said: “Sarah is an interesting mix of small town Irish charm and fierce ambition.

"She has the drive to reach the very top, but she doesn’t like all the nonsense that goes with it.

Perhaps, given his good looks, a rather swashbuckling love life is to be expected: gossips in Dublin insist that he was once — when between serious girlfriends — seen leaving a nightclub in the city with no fewer than three attentive females in tow.

He has had four serious romances to date, breaking the heart of one gorgeous actress and being thrown over by another.

His first girlfriend was actress India Whisker, a pretty blonde whom he met in 2004 while at drama school in Dublin.

She was followed by another actress, brunette Charlene McKenna. They lived together in Camden, North London, from 2007 to 2009.

She told an interviewer how happy they were together. But within a few weeks they split, and she was apparently devastated.

Turner then fell for Lenora Crichlow, his co-star in the TV series Being Human — from 2009 he played a vampire and she a ghost. Then in 2011, he and Lenora parted ways and he decided to quit the series while she stayed on. It seems that this was a source of great heartbreak for him.

He said this week: ‘I don’t know anyone on this planet who hasn’t had their heart broken. It’s happened to me. Love is love, it’s the purest and rawest thing we have in life.

The following year he started to date the Irish actress Sarah Greene. She was nominated for a Tony award for her performance on Broadway opposite Daniel Radcliffe in The Cripple of Inishmaan, and last year starred in the film Adam Jones with Bradley Cooper.

Their romance is still going strong after three years, but Turner admits that they are often separated by work. He spent 18 months making The Hobbit films in New Zealand early on in their liaison.

He explained of the periods of separation: ‘It’s all we’ve ever known [as a couple] and it makes for good times when we meet up again and maybe have a month straight when we’re both unemployed and watching movies every day. It’s fun to laze around and do normal things.’

Aidan Turner almost breaks Twitter as fans gush over heartthrob as he discusses Poldark re-make on This Morning

Actor Aidan Turner caused quite a reaction as he appeared on This Morning today - and that was just from host Amanda Holden .

The presenter had to fan herself as she welcomed the actor on to the show , and Twitter fans were just as excited to see the heartthrob, as he discussed his upcoming role in the re-make of Poldark.

Asked what his family thought to his new role, Aidan revealed: "My mum said something like 'don't screw it up'."



As Amanda giggled along with the rest of us, to pretty much everything the actor said, they showed spoilers from the upcoming hit.

The actor will be reunited with former Being Human co-star Russell Tovey later in the show, and he couldn't resist dropping his friend in it.

When asked about any secrets between them, Aidan admitted Russell was great at karaoke - and his speciality was Fast Car.

Could we be treated to a rendition? Or even better, a duet?
