In Ross Poldark, we have reached romantic hero nirvana

THE GUARDIAN

Ross Poldark
‘He straddles different social classes with the same mastery with which he straddles his stallion.’ Aidan Turner as Captain Ross Poldark. Photograph: Mike Hogan/BBC/Mammoth Screen

Stripped to the waist, his pecs lightly furred, a faint, photogenic sheen of sweat delineating his six-pack, the sun glinting on his dark Byronic tumble of curls, the classic patrician lines of his face given distinction by the devilish scar that lovingly caressed one sharp cheekbone, Captain Ross Poldark treated the nation to some hot scything action on Sunday night – and the nation did swoon. By the time Poldark, aka Aidan Turner, had saved a misguided young poacher from transportation, gainfully employed the local peasantry by reopening his father’s mine, then bedded and wedded Demelza, his flighty young serving girl, Twitter was a’twitter with love for the kind of romantic hero that has been absent from our screens for far too long.

Not since Colin Firth, as one Fitzwilliam Darcy, strode purposefully out of the lake at Pemberley, his white shirt clinging to the planes of his chest, have Sunday nights been such a treat.

In Ross Poldark we have reached romantic hero nirvana. Whether he is straddling different social classes or his stallion, it is always with the same mastery. He has the life experience that can only come from fighting in a war then returning home to find his father dead, the family tin mine all but derelict and his one true love married off to his doughty cousin. He’s equally at home in the drawing rooms of the gentry as he is supping cider in the fields with the great unwashed. He has contempt for those who are rich only by accident of birth and knows how to perform all manner of household tasks. He’s part alpha male, part metrosexual, all combined in one HD-ready, smouldering package.

Now, compare Poldark to that other romantic hero of our age, Christian Grey. Grey’s deep inner turmoil comes from the kind of mummy issues so basic that even a GCSE psychology student would roll their eyes at them. He may be suited and booted, but in the box office-busting adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey, with every extraneous hair felled from his body, Grey looks disturbingly pre-pubescent for a tortured torturer. Even more disturbing is that Jamie Dornan looked sexier playing a serial killer in The Fall than he ever did when he was getting down to some sexy slapping in the Red Room.

There’s something incredibly reductive and old-fashioned about the pumped-up posturing of the BDSM-lite billionaire. It harks back to the days when steamy bodice-rippers featured brutish heroes and love scenes that bordered on rape – the kind of romances that have long fallen out of favour with the readers of romantic historical fiction, who now prefer the more considered and contemporary novels of writers like Courtney Milan, Stephanie Laurens and Elizabeth Hoyt. Their heroines have backbone, their heroes aren’t autocratic arseholes, and any bodice-ripping is entirely consensual.

Charlie Hunnam: Doing Fifty Shades Right After Sons of Anarchy Would Have Been a "F---ing Disaster"

US WEEKLY
Entertainment Nov. 11, 2014 AT 10:35PM By Allison Takeda

You gotta do what you gotta do — or not do, as the case may be. Fans were shocked when Charlie Hunnam walked away from the Fifty Shades of Grey movie just a few weeks after his casting had been made public, but he says he had a good reason. Speaking about the decision in a new interview with Men's Health, the Sons of Anarchy actor said that the shooting schedule would have compromised his ability to fully commit to the role.

"I was going to finish playing a psychopath who'd just lost his wife [in Sons], and five days later I'd be on set playing Christian Grey," the hunky 34-year-old told the mag for its December issue. "I was like, 'This is going to be a f---ing disaster.' It was the opposite of how I've tried to ground my career, not stretch myself too thin, and always do my homework."

Hunnam further explained that "there's a tendency in this Hollywood machinery to take on too much. You end up not being able to give everything you want." He learned early on that that kind of lifestyle doesn't work for him. "Since I was young, I've been aware that I need time to myself to process everything," he told Men's Health.

‘Sons of Anarchy’ Charlie Hunnam Beats ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Jamie Dornan As ‘King Arthur’

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES
By Riza Ornos | September 1, 2014 4:42 PM EST

Known as SAMCRO's president Jax Teller, "Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam, is a top choice to play King Arthur in the upcoming six-series movie. Beating top contenders for the role including "Fifty Shades of Grey" replacement Jamie Dornan, Hunnam is close to signing the contract with director Guy Ritchie.

The sexy Irish actor reportedly returned the favour to Hunnam after scoring the role on E.L. James movie adaptation. Based on reports, Dornan removed himself out of the running for the epic movie as his scheduled clashed with his commitments with "Fifty Shades." Set to premiere on Valentine's Day 2015, the highly anticipated movie was dropped by the SOA star due his show's scheduling conflicts which is currently in its final season.

Poised to reprise his role as Raleigh Becket in Guillermo del Toro's summer hit sequel "Pacific Rim," the Newcastle-born actor is going to have a busy movie career after he wraps up "Sons of Anarchy." Playing one of the most iconic characters in film and English Literature, Hunnam is going to trade his Harley into an Excalibur.

"When you see Hunnam as Jax Teller leading the Sons into the final brutal revenge filled final season, I think you'll agree that he has all the intensity necessary to play King Arthur, and that this is a better post-Sons course for him than playing the S&M fetishist billionaire Christian Grey," Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr. exclusively reports. "A role that Sutter and I agreed is better suited to a newcomer than an established actor on the cusp of movie stardom."

While there are a slew of notable actors who would clearly be suitable for the groundbreaking role of Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, there are also a handful that have clearly snuck under the radar such as Iron Man actor Tom Hiddleston.

According to Glamour Magazine, the 32-year-old is "mega sexy," and "can do the kind, lovely man routine - have you seen War Horse? - and with his superhero movie role Loki in Thor, we've seen him do baddy too. All in all, perfect Christian Grey."
With his rugged good looks, piercing greenish color-changing eyes, and blondish mane, the Brit certainly has the features necessary to embody the role of the S&M-crazed billionaire.

'Fifty Shades of Grey' Movie Casting: Top 3 Contenders for Christian Grey Include Matt Bomer vs Henry Cavill, Ian Somerhalder Out of Running? E.L. James Hints News

By Jessica Durham ,
Fashion n Style Reporter
Jul 26, 2013 12:20 PM EDT

Fans are no doubt furious to hear that one of their top 3 contenders for Christian Grey in the upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie is out of the running: Ian Somerhalder.

According to Us Weekly, sources said that E.L. James admitted that the 34-year-old "Vampire Diaries" star was out of the picture for being cast as 27-year-old sexy billionaire and BDSM-crazed Christian Grey.

"E.L. was at a Comic-Con party July 20 telling people the part won't go to Ian," a source said.

That leaves the most two favorite top contenders, Matt Bomer and Henry Cavill, still in the running [as far as fans are concerned] for the top role in the highly anticipated film. In other news, another fan-favorite, though not as big, Garrett Hedlund, turned down the role of Christian already.

"Doing a possible trilogy was too big a commitment, and producers wouldn't let him do just one film," said the source of Kirsten Dunst's boyfriend. So fans of the "On the Road" actor will not get to see him in the film either.

Henry Cavill does not see conflict in Superman and 'Fifty Shades of Grey' roles

Henry Cavill

EXAMINER
JULY 19, 2013 BY: BARBIE KAVETSKY

"Fifty Shades of Grey" has an official release date of August 1, 2014, giving Team Fifty one year to cast, film, edit and promote the most anticipated movie of the year. The difficult and lengthy process of casting is well underway and while E L James is enjoying some down time at Comic Con, the remaining production team is searching for the perfect Christian and Ana. Many fan favorites are still in the running and Henry Cavill recently discussed the role once again. Headline & Global News reported on July 18 that Cavill did not see a conflict in donning both the Superman suit and Christian Grey's red room jeans.

The "Man of Steel" star has admitted in the past that he would be interested in "Fifty Shades of Grey" as long as the script was up to par. Now Henry Cavill is defending the possibility of playing such an erotic role while still maintaining his wholesome image. "I'm very much a storyteller, I enjoy telling stories and if there is a wonderful story to tell than I don't think having played the role of Superman will necessarily stop me from telling that story. The chances are it will very much be a different vehicle than what Superman is, so it won't damage any of that character...because they'll see two very different things on screen."

Henry Cavill and Gina Carano on the Rocks? Posted by Adam (SHOW BIZ SPY)

HENRY Cavill‘s romance with Gina Carano is reportedly on the rocks.

According to American tabloid the National Enquirer, Gina doesn’t want to share her Man of Steel star beau with the rest of the world.

“Henry is really lapping up the fame and glory,” a source said

“He knew he would be getting some notice for Man of Steel but his life is absolutely crazy right now.

“Gina is used to having Henry all to herself, and now she has to share him with the world. She really fears she’s going to be swept away by the rising tide of Henry’s career.

“Gina was hoping Henry would stay grounded with the whirlwind around him, but she fears it’s going to his head… all he’s talking about now is making a Superman sequel and winning the coveted starring role in 50 Shades of Grey.

Fifty Shades Of Grey Movie Drops Henry Cavill as Christian Grey (CELEBRITY DIRTY LAUNDERY) BY SIYANA RILEY ON JUNE 22, 201

Fifty Shades Of Grey Movie Drops Henry Cavill as Christian Grey

According to reports, Henry Cavill might be out of the running to play Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation because of scheduling conflicts. I just heard a million women start crying. Calm down ladies, nothing’s set in stone yet.

Since a director has now been chosen for the film, casting will be the next major step. Everyone’s favorite choice, Henry Cavill, is just coming off a massive success with Man of Steel this past weekend. Of course, this just reinforces his status as the frontrunner for the role – if he wants it. However, that might not even be an issue anymore since he might not be available to film the movie.

According to a report from Variety, Aaron Johnson – who was initially rumored to possibly be cast as Christian Grey – will be staying home with the kids while his wife, Sam Taylor-Johnson, is directing the film this fall. Although the report doesn’t specifically state the production timeline, the fact that they single out ‘fall’ means that they’re most likely planning on shooting the film during that time period. Of course, it also makes sense from a logistical point of view since the film has to be ready by next summer, and there’s absolutely no way they can film anything later than this fall and have the footage be ready.

Henry Cavill Talks Justice League (CRAVE ON LINE)

Man of Steel

Man of Steel himself Henry Cavill offers some thoughts on those much discussed, but not very official sounding plans for a Justice League movie.

May 31st, 2013 Jason Kobely

Today was the press conference for Man of Steel. After 45 minutes of hearing Henry Cavill, his costars and filmmakers discuss the long-awaited Superman movie, I approached Cavill as the press conference broke to ask about the next stage for Superman. Before trailers were even out for Man of Steel, reports had Warner Brothers planning a Justice League movie based on this Superman.

Cavill said he was open to reprising the role of Kal-El in not just another Superman movie, but in the DC team-up prospect too.

“Of course I’m open to it, very much open to it, but I have no idea what plans are for that,” Cavill said. “I’m not privy to that kind of information. I think it would be a lot of fun to explore the character further and a continuing journey, but I know nothing about those plans so far.”

Reports of a Justice League plan may be exaggerated. Certainly, news broke that Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer were tapped to produce it, and then that was taken back. Cavill could only confirm that Justice League thoughts popped up on the Man of Steel set.

Henry Cavill: Who Will Replace Tom Cruise in Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ By Brigid Brown | Posted on May 29th, 2013 (BBC America)

Henry Cavill is in talks to sign on to The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (Examiner.com)

Guy Ritchie is set to direct the spy-fi film The Man From U.N.C.L.E based on the TV series that ran from 1964-68 … but, he’s short a lead actor. Originally Tom Cruise was scheduled to star opposite Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) but as of last week, Cruise has dropped out of the project to focus on Mission: Impossible 5, reports Deadline.com.

It’s in the early stages but the there are talks of Henry Cavill, the new Superman, as Cruise’s replacement. Coincidentally, Variety reports that Cavill auditioned for the role that went to Hammer. It sounds like Cavill was interested at one point and we’re hoping he still is, we’d like to see him take on a role of a secret agent of U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law Enforcement).

'Man of Steel' trailer released: Henry Cavill's Superman needs more than super strength against Michael Shannon's General Zod (NEW YORK DAILY NEWS) BY ETHAN SACKS / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Great Scott! The new trailer for “Man of Steel” hit the internet late Tuesday with a barrage of action scenes that moved faster than a speeding bullet.

Filling out the costume is British actor Henry Cavill, who looks the part of a superman saving a fishing boat without wearing a shirt, much less a costume.

The real star of the trailer, however, is “Man of Steel’s” villain, played by “Boardwalk Empire’s” Michael Shannon, who seems a less disco version of Terrence Stamp’s version of the character from 1980’s “Superman II.”

HENRY CAVILL: '50 Shades of Grey' Movie Cast: Henry Cavill and Matt Bomer Top Fan Polls, Alexandra Daddario Enters the Casting Arena By Peter Lesser (LATINOS POST)

Ann Boudreau

The "50 Shades of Grey" wheel just keeps on turning. Every week, every day, every minute there are new casting rumors that run rampant across the Internet. Wild speculations, fan polls and mock trailers keep fans satisfied while E. L. James and Universal take their sweet time deciding who will play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. The desperate cries of "50 Shades" fans don't seem to resonate with the hot shots in Hollywood. Typical. Regardless, it's still fun to dream. Top Christian contenders include Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer and Henry Cavill, but the "Superman: Man of Steel" star is generating some extra buzz in recent fan polls.

Christian Grey is basically Superman, so it would be a seamless transition for Cavill to assume the role. He's got the look, the class and the acting abilities to play the seductive Mr. Grey, but as previously mentioned, he's got some stiff competition. "White Collar" star Bomer is also getting a lot of "50 Shades" attention. He's even featured in three separate fan made trailers, as MStars points out.

HENRY CAVILL: Henry Cavill in Glamour UK Magazine (from Henry Cavill Website)

Henry Cavill in Glamour UK Magazine

Henry Cavill is featured in the June issue of Glamour UK where he talks about landing the role of Superman, getting acting advice from Russell Crowe and addresses rumours once again about the Fifty Shades of Grey movie.

On getting the role of Superman Henry said, "For a guy, it's pretty much the most awesome moment you can imagine."

On rumours he will be in the Fifty Shades of Grey film: "Put it this way, I've not read a script, spoken to a producer or a director."

On nudity: "I'm not a big fan of getting naked for the sake of it. I wouldn't use a body double, because I'm particular about the physicality of acting, but I won't just get my arse out because people are insisting I do."
Read the complete article in the scans below for more.

Henry Cavill
“Laugh?” Henry Cavill is staring at me incredulously. “Of course I didn’t laugh. For a guy, it’s pretty much the most awesome moment you can possibly imagine.” Not many men would describe pulling on a blue unitard that way. Then again, not many men get to play Superman. The 30-year-old Channel Islander landed the coveted role in this summer’s predicted blockbuster, Man Of Steel, after a decade of near misses.

Having lost the role of Harry Potter’s Cedric Diggory to Robert Pattinson, Twilight’s Edward Cullen once again to Pattinson, and James Bond to Daniel Craig, Henry was beginning to be known as “the unluckiest man in Hollywood”.

On the day we meet, in a beachside fish bar on a sunny LA afternoon, Henry looks anything but unlucky. He doesn’t much look like a bridesmaid (another nickname the industry press lumbered him with) either, although with his chiseled jaw, cleft chin and mass of dark curls, he’s pretty enough to be one. No, today, Henry is definitely the bride — Vera Wang gown, eight-tiered wedding cake and all. “It would have to be an alternative wedding,” he chuckles. “A blue-tights-wearing wedding.”

The secrecy shrouding the film is such that Henry is unable to say much about the Man of Steel’s new incarnation (he wasn’t even allowed to send pictures of himself in costume to his parents), but early promotional trailers have shocked fans, revealing, as they do, two crucial omissions: the kiss curl and the red trunks. “lt’s a new take on him,” laughs Henry. “Nobody has a kiss curl any more, and those shorts were derived from turn-of-the-century strong men, so we decided he could do without them.”

He still laughs about the moment the call came in from director Zack Snyder. “I was playing an online computer game, which you couldn’t pause or save, so I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll let it ring.’ Then I look down at the last minute and see Zack’s name, so I dive for it — and I just miss it.” When Henry did finally reach the director, and Zack casually asked him whether he fancied “doing a little movie with me”, Henry “wanted to explode. But you have to play it cool, you know? Although not so cool that you seem unappreciative. Then I put the phone down and there was this moment of surreal silence while I stood there and thought: ‘Did I just get a call saying, ‘You’re now Superman’?”

Henry Cavill discusses 'Fifty Shades of Grey' casting, nudity and the novel FIFTY SHADES OF GREYMAY 6, 2013 BY: BARBIE KAVETSKY (EXAMINER)

Cavill is known for his sexy nude scenes in "The Tudors" yet it appears the actor is backing away from what he calls "getting naked for the sake of it." While fans may not be thrilled with this revelation, he goes on to say that if there were nude scenes he "would not use a body double," since he is into the "physicality of acting." This should not rule him out completely for the role of Christian Grey since it sounds like he wants nude scenes to be crucial for a film, not just extra eye candy for viewers. Considering the depth and importance of the sex scenes in "Fifty Shades of Grey," he may see the necessity.

Nudity aside, Henry Cavill admits he hasn't even seen a script for "Fifty Shades of Grey." Although he has done a little research, reading a few opening chapters of the novel saying, "Not exactly chaste writing, is it?" Sounds like some of it may not be his cup of tea, "I've always preferred the implied sex scene anyway, because having it spelled out always seems a bit tacky. Sex is so readily available to us in every form of media now, so it's no longer that exciting on screen." Well, tell that to the throngs of "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans who are eager to see Christian and Ana on screen.

"Put it this way, I've not read a script, spoken to a producer or a director."
