Tom HIddleston: Is ‘Crimson Peak’ Guillermo del Toro’s First Good English Film?

MOVIE CHEAT SHEET
Jacqueline Sahagian
February 16, 2015

The trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s next movie has debuted and it looks like the creep master might have made his a film worthy of legitimate critical acclaim for the first time since his 2006 Spanish-language dark fantasy masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth. Crimson Peak is a horror movie in the old-fashioned haunted house tradition that looks like it has del Toro in his element, pulling out all the stops to engage terrifying visuals and scare the crap out of viewers. A top-notch cast including Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, and Jessica Chastain means this will be much more than your average Halloween slasher.

In the past Del Toro has separated his “good” movies (Spanish-language efforts) from his more commercial and fun English-language efforts like Hellboy and Pacific Rim. Clearly comic book and pulpy films still have a place in the director’s heart, but he told iO9 that the chance to direct and produce Crimson Peak changed his perspective on his ability to do more thoughtful work in English. “I wanted to make a movie that was able to blend two sides of my personality. After I did Mimic… Mimic was such a tough experience that I said, ‘I’m going to do the painfully beautiful and creepy things in my Spanish-language films, and I’m going to do the big sort of pop-pulp fun movies in English.’”

Pan’s Labyrinth won three Oscars, was nominated for three others, and continues to be included on lists of the greatest recent movies, including the IMDb 250 compiled by the Internet Movie Database’s most loyal users. That film is a study of the Spanish Civil War and how a young girl uses her imagination to escape her brutal reality. After making Pan’s Labyrinth, del Toro focused more on the “pop-pulp fun” movies with Hellboy II in 2008 and Pacific Rim in 2013. His new horror TV show The Strain on FX has gotten decent reception and has been picked up for another season. Nothing he’s made since Pan’s Labyrinth has gotten the same kind of critical acclaim, but Crimson Peak could change that.

Like Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak has a young female heroine at its center. While there is an element of romance used to kick off the story, as is common in the gothic tradition, del Toro says that was never meant to be the focus.

“I wanted to tackle a great adult story for a female lead,” del Toro told iO9. “I think it’s great when the female lead [is in] a normal romantic story, but then we live past that. Past getting the guy — fuck all that shit — we see her becoming her own person. We do what is done in gothic romance. We have the thriller aspect of it, we have the romance, brutal moments, and we have scary ghosts — but scarier people than ghosts. It’s a beautiful confection, and I hope you enjoy it.”

Charlie Hunnam: I don't party

BELFAST TELEGRAPH
January 29, 2015

Charlie Hunnam hates small talk and socialising with strangers.

The British actor began his career in his home country but has since made it in America, taking the lead in TV show Sons of Anarchy and scoring movie roles. Many would presume he’s living the dream, but there are some aspects of his career which don’t sit so well with the star.

“My social anxiety,” he told Women’s Health magazine, when asked what he’s most insecure about. “I hate going to parties, I hate small talk, and I hate socialising with people I don’t know. I feel horribly awkward in those situations. If I have to go to a party, my whole day is ruined worrying about it.”

And that’s not the only thing which has been playing on the star’s mind. He shot into the limelight in 2013 when he was announced to be playing raunchy businessman Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation, although he pulled out of the picture not long afterwards and was replaced by Jamie Dornan.

Charlie is in a long-term relationship with jewellery designer Morgana McNelis and said that friendship is always the best basis for a romance. He likes to treat the lady in his life when he can, and has a healthy sense of his own best assets.

“F**k you’re getting old. But you still look good,” he laughed, when asked what he thinks when he looks in the mirror.

Charlie Hunnam - **Spoiler Alert** Charlie Hunnam Cried At Emotional Sons Of Anarchy Scenes

CONTACT MUSIC
by WENN | 27 December 2014

Actor Charlie Hunnam broke down in tears as he shot his final Sons Of Anarchy scenes with his onscreen mother Katey Sagal after having to kill her character on TV.

Sagal tells People magazine, "It was very emotional in a beautiful way. Charlie Hunnam and I cried a lot. We would just hug each other because it was also goodbye for us after working together. We've all been in our own form of denial with the show ending. But there was no turning back."

Anarchy: Charlie as Jax Teller in the TV show

He has played rebel motorcycle gang leader Jax Teller on TV hit Sons Of Anarchy for six years.

And it's clear that his character's hobbies have rubbed off on Charlie Hunnam.

The 34-year-old British-born actor spent Sunday hanging out with his biker buddies in West Hollywood.

'The first season for me was a total write-off in terms of acting because I was completely consumed with trying to do the accent, which I'd never done before,' he told The Hollywood Reporter.

'It really contained me and controlled me so that I wasn't free to make the moves I wanted to make as an actor. By midway through season two, I think I got that under control.' Starring in the acclaimed drama also propelled Hollywood producers to take notice - Charlie appeared in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim last year, and teams up with the director again in horror flick Crimson Peak, to be released next month.

'I think I'm a much better actor than I was at the beginning of the show,' he said 'It was like going to an Ivy League school with [Showrunner] Kurt Sutter being the mad professor that pushes us all to do our best work.

Charlie Hunnam Reflects on His 'Sons of Anarchy' Ride at Final Premiere

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
11:40 AM PST 09/08/2014 by Rebecca Ford

Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal and Kurt Sutter

"It was like going to an Ivy League school with Kurt Sutter being the mad professor"

It was the beginning of the end on Saturday night ,when the stars of FX's hit show Sons of Anarchy gathered for the final season premiere party in Hollywood.

The motorcycle drama will air its seventh and final season beginning on Sept. 9, but the stars of the show — including Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Theo Rossi and Kim Coates — haven't quite come to grips with the fact that the show is ending its long run.

"We're still in the middle of it," said Rossi of the show, which is currently shooting episode nine. "I think in December, when it's stops airing, that's when I'll realize it's over. But there have been little things that have happened that make me realize we're near the end."

Rossi, who has been on Sons of Anarchy since season one, says he grew up on the show. "My entire life has changed," he said at the premier at the TCL Chinese Theater. "I've become a different person, a better actor. I've learned to produce, being surrounded by people like [showrunner] Kurt [Sutter] and [executive producer] Paris Barclay. I've become a better human being, gotten involved with seven or eight charities."

Rossi wasn't the only actor reflecting on what the show has done for him as an actor. Hunnam, who stars as Jax, the leader of the motorcycle gang, says he had to get past some very tough struggles in the early seasons of the show.

"The first season for me was a total write-off in terms of acting because I was completely consumed with trying to do the accent, which I'd never done before," he told THR. "It really contained me and controlled me so that I wasn't free to make the moves I wanted to make as an actor. By midway through season two, I think I got that under control."

"I think I'm a much better actor than I was at the beginning of the show," he added. "It was like going to an Ivy League school with Kurt Sutter being the mad professor that pushes us all to do our best work. Now I feel like I'm graduating with the confidence of that education, and I'm excited to go make some films."

Hunnam, who starred in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, will next be seen in Crimson Peak and recently signed on to play King Arthur in Guy Ritchie's upcoming film.

‘Sons of Anarchy’ Charlie Hunnam Beats ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Jamie Dornan As ‘King Arthur’

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES
By Riza Ornos | September 1, 2014 4:42 PM EST

Known as SAMCRO's president Jax Teller, "Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam, is a top choice to play King Arthur in the upcoming six-series movie. Beating top contenders for the role including "Fifty Shades of Grey" replacement Jamie Dornan, Hunnam is close to signing the contract with director Guy Ritchie.

The sexy Irish actor reportedly returned the favour to Hunnam after scoring the role on E.L. James movie adaptation. Based on reports, Dornan removed himself out of the running for the epic movie as his scheduled clashed with his commitments with "Fifty Shades." Set to premiere on Valentine's Day 2015, the highly anticipated movie was dropped by the SOA star due his show's scheduling conflicts which is currently in its final season.

Poised to reprise his role as Raleigh Becket in Guillermo del Toro's summer hit sequel "Pacific Rim," the Newcastle-born actor is going to have a busy movie career after he wraps up "Sons of Anarchy." Playing one of the most iconic characters in film and English Literature, Hunnam is going to trade his Harley into an Excalibur.

"When you see Hunnam as Jax Teller leading the Sons into the final brutal revenge filled final season, I think you'll agree that he has all the intensity necessary to play King Arthur, and that this is a better post-Sons course for him than playing the S&M fetishist billionaire Christian Grey," Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr. exclusively reports. "A role that Sutter and I agreed is better suited to a newcomer than an established actor on the cusp of movie stardom."

Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Jessica Chastain have been announced as joining the cast of Guillermo del Toro's forthcoming gothic horror movie, 'Crimson Peak.'

The 'Sherlock' star and Oscar-nominated actress join Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam in the Legendary Pictures production which will be del Toro's follow-up to 'Pacific Rim.'

Written by del Toro with Matthew Robbins and Lucinda Coxon: the film is a ghost story described by the director as  "…a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.”
