Gold Derby Emmy MVP: Charlie Hunnam ('Sons of Anarchy') gives career-best performance

GOLD DERBY
By Marcus James Dixon
Nov 18 2014 22:08 Pm

So many secrets were revealed during the "Suits of Woe" episode of "Sons of Anarchy" that we wouldn't blame you for overlooking the career-best performance given by star Charlie Hunnam Tuesday night.

Accent aside, Hunnam's riveting, emotional performance as Jax Teller showed why this UK actor deserves his very first Emmy nomination. After seven years playing such a popular character, why has Hunnam never been nominated before by America's highest TV honor?

"Sons of Anarchy" viewers are used to seeing Hunnam playing the noble (yet troubled) President of the motorcycle club, yet he's never received any awards honors for his work. Surprisingly, besides a sole Critics' Choice TV Award nomination in 2012, Hunnam hasn't been nominated for anything else.

Written by Peter Elkoff, Mike Daniels and creator Kurt Sutter and directed by Peter Weller, "Suits of Woe" was the episode that "SoA" fans have been waiting for all year. Jax finally discovered the truth behind his wife's murder as Gemma (Katey Sagal) bolted from Charming to parts unknown. How will this reveal affect the story going forward? That's to be determined.

Can Hunnam break through at the 2015 Emmys to receive his first nomination as Best Drama Actor for "Sons of Anarchy"? Let's consider the factors working for and against this Gold Derby Emmy MVP.

Another new pic from Downton Abbey, Season 4!

‘Downton Abbey’ season 4: Some fun with Allen Leech (and a dog), BY MATT CARTER

Isis

ISIS, arriving at the set

While Allen Leech was not one of the “Downton Abbey” stars nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award on Thursday, the actor has still had a little bit of fun this week courtesy of sharing what has to be one of the more-entertaining photos that we have seen from the show’s season 4 set.

“Isis is such a diva! INSISTS on wearing a hat in EVERY scene! And as for adding her own lines… DON’T get me started”

There is something first of all about this image that we personally find to be perfect for a meme, and strangely, Isis’ expression almost feels rather British like she could be a direct descendant of Robert himself. We’re mostly just thrilled to see that there even a great relationship on set between the actors and the animals, and that cannot always be an easy thing multiple scenes in, where there may just be a certain philosophy and desire at that point to just try to get the work done rather than having to stress about getting a dog to do what they are asked.

Joanne Froggett and Brendan Coyle Talk Season 3 of DOWNTON ABBEY, Emmy Nominations, War Wounds and American Television by Christina Radish Posted: July 31st, 2012 at 1:36 pm (COLLIDER)

Returning for Season 3 in September in the UK and January 2013 on PBS, the hit drama series Downton Abbey will see wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises that grip the majestic English country estate, now that the Great War is over and a long-awaited engagement is on.  Written and created by Julian Fellowes, the show has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon, breaking records with all of its nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards.

While at the PBS portion of the TCA Summer Press Tour, co-stars Joanne Froggatt (who plays head housemaid Anna Smith) and Brendan Coyle (who plays currently incarcerated head valet John Bates) talked about how all of the Emmy nominations feel, what it’s been like to have the show become such a cultural phenomenon, how surprised they were when they learned the fate of Mr. Bates, and the possibility of working in the U.S., once the show is finished.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Question: How do the Emmy nominations feel?  Are you surprised that it happened?

JOANNE FROGGATT:  Yes!  Brendan and I had shot half of a scene, and then it was our lunch break, which was when the Emmys were announced.  So, I was in the post office on my lunch break, and then I ran back to my dressing room to get changed back into my costume.  I looked at my phone and had a text from Michelle [Dockery] saying, “Congratulations!”  And my manager called three times.  I was like, “What’s going on?”  So, I called Michelle and was like, “Did we do really well in the nominations?,” and she was like, “You’re nominated and we’re all nominated.  We got 16.”  I was screaming on the phone, and jumping up and down with Michelle.  Brendan and I didn’t see each other until we went back to finish the scene.  So, the first half of the scene, he’s quite normal and calm.

BRENDAN COYLE:  That was pre-nominated.   The second half of the scene was post-nominated.  I want to see the rushes to see if there’s any kind of glow.

FROGGATT:  I have very red ears in the post-nominated half because I was so flushed and emotional.  It will be interesting to see if people spot that.

When you started working on this show, did you have any idea that it was going to become such a pop culture phenomenon, and what do you make of it?

FROGGATT:  Well, I’m getting married, later this year, and the vicar that’s marrying me and my partner sent me an email about details for our wedding.  At the bottom of the email, he said, “If Jo could fix it for me and my wife to go to the Downton set, she’ll go straight to heaven.”  I was like, “Great!”  That’s the easiest deal that I’ve ever done!

Brendan Coyle Interview: Brendan Coyle talks 'Downton Abbey' Season 3 WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE IMPRISONED BATES AND MORE By Daniel Fienberg SUNDAY, JUL 22, 2012 2:07 PM (HIT FIX)

(PART OF THE INTERVIEW)

Actually, other than his consummate politeness, Coyle seems very little like Mr. Bates. He dresses nattily, walks without a limp and -- and this will seem almost unfathomable for "Downton Abbey" fans -- he frequently smiles.

I got very few spoilers out of Coyle in our brief chat.

I know that Mr. Bates will spend some/much of Season Three in prison. But I don't know how much, exactly.

I also know that he knows what happened with Vera, the horrible late Mrs. Bates, but I don't know what he knows.

Click through for the full conversation...

HitFix: First off, congratulations on the Emmy nomination!

Brendan Coyle: Thank you very much, Dan. I appreciate it. It's a lovely thing.

HitFix: Did you have any expectations or anticipation or nervousness about that?

Brendan Coyle: No, I didn't even know I was in the running. No one said, "Listen, you might be nominated for an Emmy." I didn't think about it at all. I was nominated for a BAFTA the year before, so that was lovely, but I thought, "That's it now for 'Downton Abbey.'" So this is extraordinary. It's indicative of also the way it's been appreciated in the States, which has been remarkable for us. And... yeah. I'm delighted.

HitFix: Who let you know and how?

Brendan Coyle: Well, we had a break in filming. It was during our lunch hour. I was sitting having "a sneaky fag," as we call it, with O'Brien, with Siobhan Finneran. The producer came up. He had about three phones on-the-go and he was talking to someone while saying, out of the corner of his mouth, "And here's the Emmy nominated Brendan Coyle." And I just went, "What? What?!?" The extraordinary thing is... Joanne Froggatt, she popped out to the post office, so she didn't know about her nomination either, so we were filming a scene and half-way through the scene, we broke for lunch. So when we left, half of the scene we shot was as non-nominees and when we came back after lunch, we'd both been nominated for an Emmy. So I'm gonna watch that scene and see if you can see if there's any glow in the second part of the scene.

HitFix: Given how much your characters and performances are tied together, how gratifying was it for you that Joanne was also nominated?

Brendan Coyle: So gratifying! I'm such a fan of her work and I see it at close quarters and I just think she's magnificent. She's a beautiful actor and I was just really thrilled for her. So deserved.

"I had a real sort of lovely wave of emotion about it, which was very beautiful," he told Entertainment Weekly. "And then I had to crack on and get back to work."

"It's really gratifying to us," he admitted. "It's gonna be great to just pop over and say hello and express our gratitude."

Downton Abbey's reaction at Emmy nominations (DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD)

Downton Abbey
“It is a great honour and tremendously exciting to find our show on the list for this year’s Emmy ceremony. The very steep competition can only be considered a compliment, since they are all fantastic programs, and I hope they are as happy as I am, celebrating their nominations”. — creator/writer/executive producer Julian Fellowes

“The Emmys aren’t well known in Great Britain as the BAFTAs, but within the industry, they’re considered the preeminent TV awards. What (our nominations) mean for us is that Downton Abbey isn’t just a huge hit in its own country, but offshore as well. Downtown has the record number for most noms for a British series [Editor's note: Downton has a total of 27 noms over 2 years. Upstairs Downstairs had a total of 23 since 1977)...(Downton resonates in America) because we start off with a familiar recognizable British drama with Edwardian and class system elements; things that are recognizable in literature. We created a modern show with fast storytelling, myriad characters; but going into a much loved traditional genre". -- executive producer Gareth Neame
