'Downton Abbey' Series 4: Laura Carmichael Says Lady Edith Will Get Feisty (HUFF POST)

Downton Abbey star Laura Carmichael has revealed Lady Edith Crawley is set to get feisty in the new series.

The actress has just begun filming the fourth series of the hit period drama and revealed while her character had a reputation for being a bit dowdy and desperate to marry in previous series, she has now become quite a modern, independent woman.

Laura said: "She's coming into her own a little bit I think. It's all be ups and downs. But I think after being jilted I think she's thrown it all out the window, any ideas she did have in the first place and I think that's been good for her. It's given her a bit of independence and hotspur. I love playing her."

'Downton Abbey' recap: Spinsters Get Up For Breakfast (EW.COM)

It's full steam ahead on Edith's wedding preparations, while the servants cause their usual mischief in the bowels of the Abbey

By Denise Warner | Published Jan 13, 2013

Two big things happened -- one good, one bad, on the latest episode of Downton Abbey. And no, neither of them involve Laura Linney's opening narration.

Bad news first. As the middle Crawley sister, Lady Edith rarely has a moment to shine -- unless she's driving around a tractor or writing letters for wounded soldiers. Between Mary's drama with men named Kemal, Carlisle or Matthew, Sybil's rebellious job as a nurse and then her rebellious marriage to the Crawley's chauffeur, Edith has been left in her sisters' shadows to make googly-eyes. However, now that she's marrying Sir Anthony Strallan, "something happening in this house is actually about [Edith]."

Genuinely happy about the upcoming nuptials, Edith prepares to take over as mistress of Sir Anthony's house and for their trip to Rome, Florence and Venice where, presumably, she will lose her virginity. No wonder she's ready to get married...

Lord Grantham and the Dowager Countess continue to disapprove of Edith's choice of husband. (Funny, they didn't seem to mind him when they tried to foster him on Mary back in 1913, or when he almost proposed to Edith then as well. I know he's injured from the war, but still.) Yet, the two are resigned to having an old man as a son-in-law/grandson-in-law.

Unfortunately,  Sir Anthony comes to the realization that he doesn't want to indenture Edith for the remainder of his life. So the natural thing to do is pull a Mr. Big and leave Edith at the altar. Poor Edith doesn't know what to do with herself, so the Dowager practically pries her away from Sir Anthony as he flees the church.

Downton Abbey star, Laura Carmichael, feels sorry for legendary director Sir Peter Hall after he ruins her West End début by heckling! November 8th, 2012 by Anna Howell. (UNREALITY PRIMETIME)

Downton Abbey star, Laura Carmichael admits that not only feeling embarrassed after legendary theatre director, Sir Peter Hall heckled her début West End performance, but also feels “really bad” for him too!

Laura, who plays Lady Edith Crawley in the award-winning ITV period drama, was staring in Uncle Vanya at the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End, when Sir Peter Hall, who was in the audience, reportedly shouted ‘stop’ during the final scene, causing those nearby him to miss the ending.

As mortifying as being heckled by such a theatre giant on your first night performance would be, Laura has forgiven Sir Peter according her friend and Downton co-star, Joanne Froggatt.

Meanwhile Sir Peter, who admits to bellowing “stop, stop, stop” from his seat in the third row of the stalls during Laura’s performance, has revealed that he has written to Laura to apologise for his actions, despite saying at the time: “It doesn’t work and you don’t work. It is not good enough. I could be at home watching television.”

According to the publication, Sir Peter has now apologised for his actions, and tried to excuse himself with age, adding: “I am mortified that I unintentionally disrupted the final scene,” he said. “I enjoyed the evening, and her performance, immensely and I cannot stress too strongly that my remarks were in no way directed at her or the production.

“Being rather aged, I dropped off for a moment and, on being woken by my wife, I was briefly disorientated.
