Brendan Gleeson hoping US TV role is on The Money

HE has played everything from Irish gangster Martin Cahill to a moody wizard in Harry Potter.

Now, Irish actor Brendan Gleeson is hoping to weave his magic on the US silver screen. The Dubliner will play a power-hungry media mogul in his first attempt at an American TV series.

Gleeson (58) has been handpicked by top US production company HBO to lead the cast in their brand new pilot.

The In Bruges actor will play a greedy media chief in drama The Money, which comes from Deadwood creator David Milch.

Gleeson takes on the role of American patriarch James Castman who is trying to expand his media empire and control his family.

If commissioned for a full season, The Money will mark Gleeson's first US TV series.

The move comes after Gleeson impressed HBO with his portrayal of Winston Churchill in TV movie Into the Storm, for which he won an Emmy Award in 2009.

HBO has given a pilot order to "Deadwood" and "Luck" writer David Milch's "The Money" and it has found its leading man, TheWrap has learned.

Irish actor Brendan Gleeson will play James Castman in the one-hour drama pilot about wealth and corruption among the super elite. Castman, an American mogul and his family's patriarch, wields his power and influence to expand his media empire and control his family.

Gleeson's long list of film credits include "Troy," "Gangs of New York," and "Braveheart."

Brendan Gleeson - Brendan Gleeson To Play Marvin Gaye's Belgian Pal In Biopic 27 April 2013 (CONTACT MUSIC)

Irish actor Brendan Gleeson and S. Epatha Merkerson have joined the cast of director Julien Temple's much-anticipated Marvin Gaye biopic.

The film, which stars Jesse L. Martin as the tragic soul legend, was recently picked up by executives at Focus Features International, and the untitled project will be presented to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival in France next month (May13).

Troy star Gleeson will play late promoter Freddy Cousaert, who convinced Gaye to live in Ostend, Belgium towards the end of his career, and Merkerson will play the singer's mother.

Actor Sean Bean talks about his upbringing, fantasy roles and acting Actor Sean Bean has to his credit plum names such as The Lord of the Rings (TLOTR), GoldenEye, Troy and what not but did one know that the English actor has his roots as the son of a welder from Sheffield to thank for his prowess. “I do think it affects how you grow up. I became a welder too. So when I told my mum and dad I was going to be an actor, I got a few funny looks. But it did kind of fashion the way I was brought up and the way I thought about things,” says the 52-year-old.

Perhaps that is what shaped up his performances as he came to be known as the actor who could engage the camera even if it was held on his face for few seconds.
“I suppose a lot of it is observation. Being an actor, you do tend to pick up the way people act or laugh and the way their temperament changes suddenly,” says Bean, who was last seen in HBO’s medieval fantasy series Game of Thrones.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling series, A Song of Ice and Fire, it showed him enacting Eddard Ned Stark, a tough northern warrior, who risks everything to defend his friend.
Having done other costume dramas such as TLOTR and Troy, he confesses it is his fancy to do such projects because “the characters tend to be very one-dimensional in a lot of the stuff you get offered these days”.

Ask him if he had any apprehensions to venture into the TV fantasy after TLOTR, he says, “Not really. I suppose they do have similarities. Lord of the Thrones."
