Doc Martin.Doc Martin.
ABC1, 7.30pm

Despite my fondness for curmudgeons and quaint English towns, I've always been a bit put off by Doc Martin. Perhaps it's because my parents have declared it their favourite show. This, however, is a particularly enjoyable episode.

While Doc Martin (Martin Clunes) is still getting used to his yet-to-be-named child, the sweetly docile local plod, Joe (John Marquez), is in for a shock. His former wife, Maggie, has turned up after several years and can't remember much of the time she's been away or why she left in the first place. Her condition turns out to be much more serious than selective memory and allows the Doc to show compassion.

Meanwhile, Louisa's mother – the sort of flame-haired, large-jewellery-wearing type who goes on sabbatical to Spain and has much younger boyfriends – is ruffling a few feathers. After running into an old paramour on the harbour, who promptly faints, they reconnect. But it might be business rather than pleasure, which only heightens the tension between Louisa, her mother and Doc Martin.
