Brendan Gleeson and Michael Fassbender each get Best Actor nominations for 2012 Golden Globes

Brendan Gleeson's work in The Guard has been justifiably rewarded with a Best Actor nomination at the 2012 Golden Globes, while fellow Irish actor Michael Fassbender also got a nod.

Although The Guard was not able to replicate its stunning domestic success worldwide, Gleeson's starring role evidently didn't go unnoticed by the Hollywood Foreign Press, as he received a nod for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical at today's nominations event.

In the equally prestigious (some would argue perhaps even more prestigious) Best Actor in a Drama field, Irish/German actor Michael Fassbender is up against Hollywood luminaries such as Leonard DiCaprio, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling for his role as a sex addict in Shame. No pressure, Michael.

Finally, in another boon for the Irish film industry, the forthcoming release of the Glenn Close-starring Albert Nobbs received three nominations. The film is based on a short story by Irish novelist George Moore and shot on location in Dublin and Wicklow, while the Original Song nod was for the film's track 'Lay Your Head Down', sung by Sinead O'Connor.

The full nominations that were announced today can be seen below. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 69th Golden Globes Award will be televised on January 15, 2012 and hosted by the ever-controversial Ricky Gervais.
