Immortals: Movie pulled from theaters in Bahrain

Film withdrawn after objection

A HOLLYWOOD blockbuster, which was released in Bahrain even before it was shown in the US, has been pulled from cinemas amid complaints that it contravenes Islamic values.

Immortals, which was seventh on the US Box office chart yesterday, was shown for five days in Bahrain at Seef Cineplex, Cineco at Bahrain City Centre, Al Jazira Cineplex and Saar Cineplex.

The 3D film premiered on November 9, two days before it was launched in the US.
However, sources told the GDN it was pulled out after just five days by the Information Affairs Authority (IAA) because an Islamic faction complained.

They said a group of hardliners demanded an immediate end to screenings because the film showed mythical gods fighting for supremacy.

The film tells the story of the fictional King Hyperion and his murderous Heraklion army, which rampages across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus.

With the invincible Bow, the king would be able to overthrow the gods of Olympus and become the master of the world.

It stars Mickey Rourke, Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto.

Sources said the film was now being reviewed before a final decision is taken on whether screenings will resume.

"The movie was sanctioned by the IAA, but was removed five days later after complaints," they added.

"It will be reviewed thoroughly before any decision is taken on its fate." The film has grossed $68.7 million (BD26m) in the US since its release and is currently being screened in Qatar, the UAE and Jordan. mohammed@gdn.com.bh
