“The thing I’m attracted to is strong writing,” says Lesley, who also credits the acclaimed director Mike Leigh for influencing the way she approaches roles.

Following the new series of Scott & Bailey, Lesley will appear in Sky1 comedy Starlings with Downton Abbey’s Brendan Coyle as part of husband and wife team Terry and Jan. “The character I play in that is delightful. Loving, warm, kind and really loves her husband and kids.

And she’s funny,” says Lesley. It puts paid to her reputation for choosing troubled but defiant women. “I don’t consciously seek tragic figures,” she says before steering the conversation back to Scott & Bailey. “One of the great things about Janet, and the thing I really love about her, is that she’s someone absolutely trying to do her best.

“Like a lot of people, she doesn’t always get it right, but the virtue is in the attempt and I love that. “That’s what women do.”
