Downton Abbey newcomer Tom Cullen has found filming the period drama ‘the weirdest experience’.

The Welsh actor joins the hit ITV show as Lord Gillingham, and revealed that stepping on to the grand set felt a bit bizarre.

‘It was the weirdest experience’ Cullen told The Sun. ‘It’s a bit like stepping into a dream. Seeing all these living, breathing characters walking around and I’m in the middle of it, not knowing what the hell I’m doing there. Very weird.’

Lord Gillingham has been described as an old friend of the Crawley family who visits for a house party. There has also been speculation that he could strike up a romance with the recently widowed Lady Mary.

Publicity for the fourth series of Downton Abbey has been ramping up over the past couple of months, ahead of the programme starting again this autumn.
