Nominated for: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Role: Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey
All these awards ceremonies are old hat for the veteran television, theatre and stage actress, who was being feted in the United States long before this so-called 'British invasion' of acting talent.
This is the seventh time Smith has been nominated for an Emmy Award, the first coming in 1993 for her leading role as Mrs Venable in an adaptation of Tennessee Williams's Suddenly Last Summer.
