Not that we blame Bates, of course. In fact, one of Season 4’s parting shots is of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) ripping up evidence that could potentially link Bates to the scene of the crime, a sign that seems to suggest she supports whatever her father’s valet may or may not have done to protect his wife. So what does the rest of the Downton Abbey cast make of the situation? Is Bates a murderer or, if you also believe he killed his first wife, the meddlesome Vera, earlier in the series, a double murderer?

“As a viewer, yeah. Definitely,” Hugh Bonneville (Robert) said with a laugh while chatting with PBS.

“It’s very interesting to imagine him as a double murderer,” added Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith). “And the nice thing is, you’re still on his side.”

“He is an enigma, Bates,” says Allen Leech (Tom Cullen). “Why does he really have a limp? I think he’s carrying a shotgun under that leg.”

Hear what the rest of the cast has to say of their fellow Downton member, and tell us your thoughts on the matter in the comments below!
