DEN OF GEEK
BECKY LEA
October 2016
The fifth and final series of Ripper Street starts a mere three days after the final events of the fourth series, opening with the funeral of Bennett Drake. Reid (Matthew Macfadyen), Jackson (Adam Rothenberg), and Susan (MyAnna Buring) remain hidden in the sewers, still reeling from Drake’s death at the hands of the feral Nathaniel (Jonas Armstrong). Nathaniel’s brother, Augustus Dove (Killian Scott) sets about covering up his own actions as well as his sibling’s. To aid this, he brings back an old Whitechapel nemesis, Jedediah Shine (Joseph Mawle), last seen beaten into submission by Drake, as the new Chief of H division and commands him to track down Reid.
The fourth series’ climactic scenes were designed to shatter the status quo that was the investigative team of Lehman Street. Even when the relationship between Reid, Drake, and Jackson was fractious, they were united in their common desire to clean up the streets of Whitechapel by whatever means necessary. Losing Drake, and therefore the strong presence of Jerome Flynn, is a risk to the established dynamic of the show as the chemistry of the three central characters was often its strongest element.
How the series manages without Flynn in the longer term of course remains to be seen, but there is enough intrigue in this first episode that Drake’s loss is felt solely on an emotional level, rather than in Closed Casket’s construction. Time is spent with protagonists and antagonists alike, all of whom deal with Drake’s death in different ways. Though her scenes are brief, Charlene McKenna’s performance is heart-wrenching as the grief of losing her husband overcomes Rose and she runs away from her home. Macfadyen and Rothenberg are as reliable as ever, stoic and focused in their ambition to avenge their friend.
The episode itself reflects that stoicism; aside from Rose and Matilda’s respective scenes and a short moment in which Susan catches sight of Connor outside Dove’s home, the emotions are somewhat downplayed. There’s a new, more sombre version of the theme tune, befitting the mournful turn of events and used to establish the quieter tone that the episode goes for. It works well, particularly in the more sinister moments, such as Dove sweeping Connor into his arms, or Matilda coming face to face with an old foe of her father’s. When the heightened, emotional scenes do come, the contrast helps them land more effectively.

Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn, Adam Rothenberg:Ripper returns to shoot gory scenes around city
HERALD.IE
BY MELANIE FINN – 06 JUNE 2014 12:00 AM

Here’s an unexpected sight - filming for series three of Ripper Street on the streets of Dublin this morning.
And this morning it was business as usual for the often-gruesome show as the cast and crew descended on the Custom House in Dublin’s north inner city.
In one scene, actress MyAnna Buring, who plays brothel madam Long Susan, is seen exiting the building showing blood-stained hands.
Also making a welcome return to the new series is Monaghan native Charlene McKenna, who plays former prostitute Rose.

Ripper Street: I had to let rip with a song but I'll stick to acting – Charlene McKenna

HERALD IE
28 August, 2013
Petite actress and reluctant singer Charlene McKenna had to warm up her vocal chords while filming the upcoming season of Ripper Street.
The 27-year-old, who plays prostitute turned songstress Rose Erskine in the hit TV series, had to belt out several show-stopping tunes on set. And Charlene says it was a daunting experience.
"I just had to sing for Ripper Street, it was my first time. I don't know if it was worth the nightmares and panic attacks," she laughed.
And Monaghan native Charlene doubts she'll be launching a singing career anytime soon.
"I have a very low voice. Beyonce is safe – let me put it that way," she laughed.
Charlene and the rest of the cast finished filming last weekend. But, before they started packing up the faux cobble streets and 1880s set, Charlene made sure her parents experienced the gruesome world of Jack the Ripper which is being filmed in Dublin.
"Mammy and daddy came to visit the set. It's only their second time ever visiting me on set. They usually just let me at it," she explained.

Charlene's mum and dad enjoyed checking out the cells and chatting to the crew but Charlene says she's the only theatrical member of the family.
"No one else in my family is in to acting – just me. I thought I'd go out on that ledge on my own."
And Charlene is in demand.
No sooner had she ditched the corset and tight, ringlet curls, she was she on a plane over to London. She will star in a West End production of Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts.
Charlene will play the part of Regina at the Almeida Theatre and began rehearsals yesterday.

RIPPER STREET: Charlene is dipping her toes in the US TV market
LAURA BUTLER – 11 MAY 2013
Her show may have a BAFTA nod and a successful opening season under its belt in the US, but Ripper Street actress Charlene McKenna says she still has a way to go before being known stateside.
Monaghan lass Charlene stars as Rose opposite Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg in the period drama. Her role is that of a prostitute, while her male cast mates play two policemen and a doctor living in Whitechapel in 1880s London in the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders.
With five million TV fans tuning in to the BBC slot across the UK and Ireland – and the series scoring successful ratings overseas – Charlene told The Diary the atmosphere was at a high on the set of season two in Dublin's Clancy Barracks.
She said: "There's definitely a lot more excitement now and everyone is getting stuck in to up things to the next level. There's a great buzz on the set, it's fantastic being back.
"I'm really looking forward to playing out my storyline this time around, too. Rose is in a very different forum and there are great things coming up for her."

Review of Ripper Street ‘The Weight of One Man’s Heart’ By Neela Debnath (INDEPENDENT)
Charlene McKenna as Rose (BBC)
On this week’s installment of CSI: Whitechapel or “Ripper Street” as it is more commonly referred to, viewers were finally given an insight into Sergeant Drake’s dark past. There was of course the regular dose of sex, violence and anachronisms that come as standard with each episode.
Thus far Drake has been somewhat of a mystery to the audience and there have only been small hints of the man he used to be. During the lockdown at the orphanage in episode 2, Drake spoke about his nightmares and revealed a tattoo of an Egyptian goddess.
For those who may have wondered what lay beneath that cool, uptight and very proper Victorian exterior need wonder no longer. Drake was a former soldier who experienced all the horrors of war and more after slaying his captors when he was taken prisoner.
There is a reason he is Reid’s muscle and essentially tethered to a leash but it is a self-imposed restriction. Jackson may mock him for being too serious but perhaps he would be less cocky if he knew what Drake was capable and what he has done in the past.
It was a great story in terms of character development and the parallels it created between the treatment of veterans returning from the front line in the Victorian era and in 2013. It served as an interesting angle and way in for viewers. Drake’s former brother-in-arms Colonel Madoc Faulkner (Iain Glen) gave a fierce critique of the ‘reward’ former soldiers are given when they return home after serving. He made a compelling argument and raised an issue that applies both then and now.
