David Tennant on Doctor Who return: I didn’t want to step on Matt Smith’s toes

Former Doctor Who David Tennant has opened up about returning for the 50th anniversary episode of the show, saying it was difficult not to step on current Timelord Matt Smith’s toes.

Tennant has filmed scenes for the upcoming episode The Day Of The Doctor, which co-stars Smith and other old faces – and he says it was tricky not to be ‘presumptuous’.

‘You want to do it as well as you did before and that’s difficult because you’re trying to think five years back and make sure it feels the same but you’re also not wanting to step on anyone’s toes or be rather presumptuous,’ the actor told audiences gathered at a BFI screening of Doctor Who.

David Tennant steps out with a brunette ponytail... as he reveals hair extensions for new Richard II role

Longer look: David Tennant arrived at the BFI Southbank's Doctor Who At 50 screening with a long brunette ponytail

At first glance it would be easy to believe that David Tennant has somehow been busily growing a luscious mane of brunette locks.

But the star is in fact sporting hair extensions for his upcoming appearance in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Richard II, as the title character, which opens in two weeks.

The 42-year-old Doctor Who star was spotted arriving at the British Film Institute for a special Doctor Who screening, in honour of the show's 50th anniversary, whilst attempting to cover his new locks with a grey baker boy cap on Sunday.

The fixed extensions, which will be worn loose for his performances, clearly could not be removed by the star, so he has been resigned to go out in public with the mane of hair. As a result, his new look has caught people's attention with many taking to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the actor's new look.

Ashley Thomas wrote on Twitter: 'I can't deal w/ this whole David Tennant ponytail situation right now. I just want to chop it off. #lessismore.'

@EmyKay13 wrote: 'David, work that ponytail even if you do look ridiculous #werkitbabay #DavidTennant.'

David Tennant, Matt Smith: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special - what we know so far

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special - what we know so far

RADIO TIMES

1:13 PM, 26 September 2013

It's called Day of the Doctor, and it's showing on the 23rd November 2013

The feature length episode title was officially revealed as The Day of the Doctor, which frankly doesn't give much away.

David Tennant and Billie Piper

Former Doctor David Tennant will reunite with former companion and unrequited love Rose (Billie Piper) for the special. They will team up with current Doctor and companion Matt Smith and Jenna Colman. The two Docs apparently love working with each other, proving that the Tardis is big enough for the both of them.

Baddies: Daleks and the Zygons

Come on, the Daleks were never going to miss the Doctor's big day, were they? The tin-pot dictators will return, along with an enemy we've hardly glimpsed since their first appearance almost 40 years ago: the creepy shape-shifting Zygons.

Goodies: UNIT

Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) – daughter of the legendary Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart and head of scientific research at the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce – will be returning to fight alongside the Doctor. Fans are hoping that means a rematch between the Zygons and UNIT, who last tangled in 1975's Terror of the Zygons.

Who is John Hurt?

Well, John Hurt is Who. As revealed at the end of the last series, John Hurt plays a previously unknown version of the Doctor. According to costume designer Howard Burden, he is a 'dark' Doctor who fits in between Paul McGann (who starred in the 1990s TV movie) and Christopher Eccleston. He said: “There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Will Feature Matt Smith And David Tennant, Not All 11 Doctors: Will Moffat Use Old Footage? (KPOP STARZ)

'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary - official image

Although "Doctor Who" creator Steven Moffat has already confirmed not all 11 Doctors will grace the 50th Anniversary Special, it still seems possible that a reunion of some sort will be illustrated this November.

"Although David Tennant has returned to his role of the Tenth Doctor, the other old Doctors will not be taking part," confirmed the Doctor Who Magazine.

And Steven Moffat gave a clear explanation of why that may be.

"We can't do 11 Doctors! Three of them are dead!" said Moffat to EW.

"What we're not doing is the traditional massive reunion. It's a different kind of anniversary, and the spine of that are David and Matt."

But, does this mean we won't see the faces of the 11 Doctors?

Matt Smith and David Tennant behind the scenes 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary TVMAY 19, 2013BY: MEREDITH JACOBS (EXAMINER)

We may have to wait months before the next "Doctor Who," but there is something out there to make the wait just a tiny bit easier. On Saturday, May 18, BBC released a behind-the-scenes video of two of the Doctors—Matt Smith and David Tennant—and it couldn't be more perfect (unless, of course, there were clips from the special).

Now that "Doctor Who" has aired its season 7 finale, it's time to look forward to the 50th anniversary special, and thanks to that finale, we now know which character John Hurt will be playing: The Doctor. Back in March, just as the second half of season 7 began airing, BBC America announced some of the best news for fans: David Tennant and Billie Piper were both returning for the 50th anniversary special. That special may not be airing until November 23, but fortunately, we don't have to wait that long to see the two Doctors on screen together—though unfortunately not in a clip from the special.

David Tennant 'Cannot Confirm Nor Deny' Return To Doctor Who Will he return for a special 50th Anniversary special? (E.)

BY OLIVER HAYES ON AUGUST 9, 2012

Fans of Doctor Who may want to take a seat if they’re reading this, as former Doctor Who actor David Tennant who played the tenth Doctor, before generating into the show’s current star Matt Smith, recently discussed rumours about a possible return!

The long running Sci Fi show will soon be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013 and producers are keen to turn this special event into somewhat of a Doctor Who reunion, with a whole host of familiar faces set to make a cameo.

However Tennant was keeping cards very close to his chest and played down any potential rumours surrounding the story by saying: "I cannot be drawn on anything," in an interview with G4TV's Attack Of The Show.
