 To say Tom Hiddleston was excited about receiving the role as Loki in The Avengers is a complete understatement... The dude was legitimately stoked.

And in the new book Joss Whedon: The Biography, we have the absolute pleasure of reading the incredibly nerdy yet oh-so-adorable Thank You letter Hiddleston wrote to the director/screenwriter, divulging his extreme excitement over the role. (It will likely make you fall in love with him all over again).  Enjoy!

I am so excited I can hardly speak.

The first time I read it I grabbed at it like Charlie Bucket snatching for a golden ticket somewhere behind the chocolate in the wrapper of a Wonka Bar. I didn't know where to start. Like a classic actor I jumped in looking for LOKI on every page, jumping back and forth, reading words in no particular order, utterances imprinting themselves like flash-cuts of newspaper headlines in my mind: “real menace”; “field of obeisance”; “discontented, nothing is enough”; “his smile is nothing but a glimpse of his skull”; “Puny god” …

… Thank you for writing me my Hans Gruber. But a Hans Gruber with super-magic powers. As played by James Mason … It's high operatic villainy alongside detached throwaway tongue-in-cheek; plus the “real menace” and his closely guarded suitcase of pain. It's grand and epic and majestic and poetic and lyrical and wicked and rich and badass and might possibly be the most gloriously fun part I've ever stared down the barrel of playing. It is just so juicy.

I love how throughout you continue to put Loki on some kind of pedestal of regal magnificence and then consistently tear him down. He gets battered, punched, blasted, side-swiped, roared at, sent tumbling on his back, and every time he gets back up smiling, wickedly, never for a second losing his eloquence, style, wit, self-aggrandisement or grandeur, and you never send him up or deny him his real intelligence…. That he loves to make an entrance; that he has a taste for the grand gesture, the big speech, the spectacle. I might be biased, but I do feel as though you have written me the coolest part.

… But really I'm just sending you a transatlantic shout-out and fist-bump, things that traditionally British actors probably don't do. It's epic.

Tom Hiddleston's fans may be disappointed to learn that Loki will not figure into the plot of The Avengers 2.

Writer/director Joss Whedon let the news slip during a podcast for Empire. When asked if the second installment about the superhero team would feature any more amusing, archaic old English banter, Whedon admitted that there won't be a character there that would be hurling those sort of insults.

"Everyone is going to be looking for the Loki-Hulk smash moment and you'll be looking for 'quim,'" Whedon told Empire. "No, first of all, imitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well. Second of all, Loki's not there to say those terrible things."

While fans may bemoan both the loss of "mewling quim" and their favorite mischief-maker, Hiddelston remarks that it could be a smart move not to have Loki fight the Avengers again.

'Avengers 2': Tom Hiddleston doubts Loki return (DIGITAL SPY)

Avengers star Tom Hiddleston has admitted he may not be asked to reprise his role as Loki in the movie's sequel.

The Thor actor told MSN that he has not spoken to director Joss Whedon about the follow-up, but believes audiences would prefer to see a new villain in the film.


"I don't know. And that really is the honest answer. I know I've been known for obfuscation in other quarters, but I have no idea," he said when asked about revisiting the part.

"I haven't spoken to Joss. He's definitely doing it. So I suspect not, only because I think that probably the audiences are tired of Loki being the bad guy. Maybe the Avengers need somebody else to fight. But I'd love to be part of it again."

Tom Hiddleston has praised The Avengers director Joss Whedon for effortlessly weaving the Marvel cinematic universe's continuity together.

The actor - who played Loki in The Avengers - admitted that he could never keep track of all the events in Marvel films like Whedon did.




"I have to take my hat off to Joss Whedon here, there's so much details. There's just so much in there. And Joss is such an extraordinary stickler, rightly, for details, you know," Hiddleston said, reports Flicks and Bits.

Hiddleston continued: "You can't just create action for actions sake, it's like, 'Why? Why this explosion, why this fight? Why are we doing it here?' There's so much depth in this film that I think if you watch it again and again and again, you will see various things about.

Tom Hiddleston: I was 'rubbish' in Thor By: Bang Showbiz (WINNIPEG FREE PRESS)

Tom Hiddleston thought he was "rubbish" in 'Thor'.

The 31-year-old star feels "very lucky" that director Joss Whedon enjoyed his performance as Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) brother Loki in the Kenneth Branagh-helmed superhero movie, so much so he wanted him to play a big part in 'Avengers Assemble'.

He said: "There was no guarantee that it was going to be such a big part, I think. And I also felt like I'd been rubbish in 'Thor' - there was no way I was going to come back.

"So it was one step at a time and I was very lucky that, as we were coming to the end of shooting 'Thor', Ken Branagh showed Joss a rough cut of the film and Joss loved it, he loved what Ken had done with it and was really about what Chris and I had done on it.

"And [Whedon] said, 'I want to take that relationship and make the stakes higher. You've got these two brothers who are fighting each other and now what's at stake is the fate of Planet Earth, because that's what's going on.' So it's really exciting."
