Benedict Cumberbatch recreates the 'fatal' leap from Sherlock's series two finale for new episodes By HANNA FLINT (DAILY MAIL)

With the production of season three of Sherlock well underway, fans breathed a sigh of relief that their favourite sleuth was back from the dead.

But it seems the incident of his 'fatal leap' in series 2 will be revisited as Benedict Cumberbatch was seen back at St Bartholomew's Hospital ready to jump from the lofty heights again for the cameras.

Gearing up to take the plunge, The Reichenbach Fall was remembered once more.

There was much orchestration before Benedict leapt off the blue structure, as he was seen talking to crew members from above on a walkie talkie.

But then it was time for action, and the actor looked stoic as he mentally prepared himself for the stunt.

Dressed in the same blue tartan scarf and black overcoat of Sherlock from the series 2 finale, Benedict fell forward, twisting in mid-flight to face the heaven's above.

Then up came his stunt double, dressed identically to the British actor, but he steeled himself for a headfirst fall.

As they continued filming in front of the London hospital, a crowd looked on in awe.

But then the action got more risky, with the stunt double launching himself into midair from a higher position.

Benedict Cumberbatch reenacts The Reichenbach Fall... from 15,000 feet (RADIO TIMES)

Thought the Sherlock season two finale featured a big drop? Find out what happened when the actor swapped a high-rise building for an aeroplane...

His star may be on the rise but Benedict Cumberbatch is falling - literally - thousands of feet to the ground. Perhaps taking inspiration from Sherlock's series two finale, The Reichenbach Fall, the actor has launched himself out of a plane at 15,000ft. But devoted fans need not fear, our beloved Sherlock actor's jump with Skydive Paradise in Queenstown, New Zealand was done in tandem with an experienced parachuter whose extra long arms provided us with an excellent selection of photographic evidence.

Sherlock series 3 update News Louisa Mellor May 21, 2012 (DEN OF GEEK)

Steven Moffat & Mark Gatiss have been chatting to the show’s American fans about the Sherlock series 2 finale and what’s in store for series 3…

This story contains potential Sherlock spoilers.

Following the US broadcast of its season 2 finale on PBS, series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss took to their keyboards to natter with US fans about all things Sherlock. Try as their interrogators might, neither would be drawn on an explanation for that ending, though a number of other interesting (and fun) nuggets did come up in the web-chat, which  we’ve collected for you below.

On the funniest thing to happen on the Sherlock set

Moffat remembered, “Benedict fell over in that sheet. What was funny is that he went down, trapped arms, flat on his face. And everybody just laughed!”. For Gatiss, it was more of a bestial matter, “Probably the monkey in the Baskerville lab erm… pleasuring himself”.

On their plans for Sherlock series 3

Both were characteristically reserved on the topic of series 3 spoilers, with Moffat confirming, “Well yes, we have our idea, and our structure, and some of our surprises. But hush now, that’s for later. Very excited though.”

Mark Gatiss though, may have given slightly more away when asked if it was likely we’d meet Colonel Sebastian Moran in series 3, to which he replied, “We’ll see. Obviously. The Empty House is a good starting point…”. The Adventure of the Empty House, for anyone yet to place it, is the story in which Holmes reveals himself to Watson after years in hiding post-Reichenbach Falls, and an odds-on favourite for appearing in episode 3.1.

Sherlock Season 2 Finale Preview: The Reichenbach Fall Author: Jesse Carppublished: 2012-05-17 06:10:38 (CINEMA BLEND)

"The Final Problem" ends with a trip to - wait for it - Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland where, well, you’ll have to seek it out for yourself to find out. But, as you can probably guess from that title, the Sherlock tale was supposed to be Doyle’s last with his most famous protagonist but after fan outcry, he returned to the sleuth and the short stories grew into novels. “The Final Problem” is also famous for being the story that introduced the character of James Moriarty, the brilliant and evil professorial nemesis of the pipe-smoking protagonist and one of literature's most famous villains. Fittingly, "The Reichenbach Fall" features the return of Andrew Scott's Jim Moriarty.
