British actor Benedict Cumberbatch gives a thumbs up at a promotional event in Tokyo July 16, 2013.

However, even though the new date got tongues wagging again, there is nothing that substantial to suggest that the date is accurate.

Sherlock executive producer, Sue Vertue, who is also the wife of Sherlock creator and executive producer, Steven Moffat, has come out to throw doubt over the new rumors.

Vertue has taken to social media networking site Twitter to post: "Not sure where #Sherlock latest rumoured tx date of 01/14 has come from. Not from me as tx date is not yet confirmed."

Although Vertue's comment seemed to debunk the rumors of a Jan. 1 premiere date, a careful look at exactly what she said reveals that she did not specifically exclude that date. She simply stated that she had no idea where that date had begun circulating from, and confirmed that the precise premiere date had not yet been officially finalized.

The newest premiere rumors were in fact started when blogger "Blogtor Who," who writes about TV shows including "Doctor Who," "Torchwood" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures," tweeted the date, according to Dan of Geek.

On Aug. 21, he tweeted: "Sherlock Series 3 Ep 1 is set in November and will air on Jan 1, 2014."

The blogger also refused to back down after Vertue's comments, pointing out that she had not specifically stated that the Jan. 1 date was wrong.

"She didn't actually deny the date. *coughs* read her tweet!" he tweeted at a fan who brought up Vertue's post.

He later also messaged another fan: "*coughs* Note: she did *not* deny the date."

David Tennant to star alongside Doctor Who's Arthur Darvill in ITV drama Broadchurch New eight-part series to be penned by Chris Chibnall and will begin filming in August (RADIO TIMES) David Brown 11:19 AM, 02 July 2012

David Tennant is to star in ITV1 drama Broadchurch, a new eight-part series penned by Doctor Who and Torchwood writer Chris Chibnall.

Produced by Kudos Film and Television, the production company behind Spooks and Life on Mars, Broadchurch will explore what happens to a small community when it suddenly becomes the focus of a major event and is subjected to the full glare of the media spotlight.

Tennant will play DI Alec Hardy, a newly promoted police detective who arrives in the town following the death of a young boy. However, local resident DS Ellie Miller (Rev star Olivia Colman) believes the case should have been hers and has to find reserves of patience to negotiate a professional relationship with the tough and unyielding Hardy.

Vicky McClure, who recently starred with Tenannt in BBC1 drama True Love, will also feature, alongside Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Will Mellor and departing Doctor Who actor Arthur Darvill, who will play town priest Paul Coates.

“Broadchurch focuses on a small British community which finds itself at the eye of a storm. In the wake of one boy’s death, the residents of Broadchurch come under scrutiny and suspicion,” said Chibnall.  “It’s a story of scale and intimacy, as the lives of the characters are laid bare.”
