Benedict Cumberbatch on his Oscars U2 photobomb: ‘I was drinking – it was Ellen DeGeneres’ fault!

Remember when Benedict Cumberbatch photobombed U2 on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars? And it was the best thing that had happened in the history of red carpet events? And then someone set it to the Jaws theme and it was EVEN BETTER?

Yeah, apparently the most important moment in Oscars history was all down to Ellen DeGeneres and her bottomless stash of miniature booze, as Benedict told Time Out this week.

“Yes, I photobombed U2! But that was all Ellen DeGeneres’s fault because she plied everyone with vodka on the red carpet,” he cheekboned.

“Her team was handing out these miniatures. A friend really wanted me to get a photo with U2. So I just saw the opportunity and I’ve never felt an impulse like it.

“I spotted them all standing around and I thought, ‘Perfect!’ It wasn’t preordained or anything. I just did it.”

Benedict Cumberbatch: “I’d hate to think anyone is sick of the sight of me”

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch says he hopes he’s not overexposed himself with the amount of roles he’s taken on. Yes, he realises that sounds dirty.

“I’d hate to think anyone is sick of the sight of me, although I wouldn’t blame them. It’s just crazy. I’ve overexposed myself! Actually that sounds a bit dirty,” Cumberbatch tells Adelaide’s The Advertiser.

“I’m proud of every single project. I can genuinely say that it is varied enough, as a slate, to not fear too much overexposure. I just hope the public agree because they are seeing a lot of me.”

Cumberbatch is undoubtedly hot property - although perhaps fans of Sherlock would be quick to suggest more of that on our screens wouldn’t go amiss.

But of course he’s a busy man. Star Trek, 12 Years A Slave and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have all had Cumberbatch’s name on the cast list. But he seems to be having fun with it. The Oscars photobombing of U2 springs to mind. The actor admits, “It would be really churlish to complain about anything to be honest. I’m very fortunate to be in the position I’m in.”

Photo bomb: Benedict Cumberbatch jumped high and pulled a face as U2 posed for a photo op on the red carpet ahead of their touching Oscars performance of Ordinary Love

There was bound to be one, and on Hollywood's night of nights it was Benedict Cumberbatch who executed the best photobomb.

Leaping into the air arms raised and fingers splayed, the Sherlock actor cut a mischievous figure as veteran rockers U2 posed for a photo op on the red carpet ahead of their Oscars performance.

Braving the rain outside of the Dolby Theater, the Dublin based group looked dashing, with Bono taking center stage in a sharp black suit and rose coloured glasses alongside his wife of 31 years, Ali Hewson.

The Edge put his own spin on red carpet class, wearing his trademark beanie and an elaborately embellished jacket, white bassist Adam Clayton sported a velvet bow tie and glittering silver lapels as he gripped the hand of his Brazilian model wife, Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho.

The multi Grammy award winners received a standing ovation when they treated the A-list guests to a touching rendition of their Academy Award nominated song Ordinary Love, which features in the Weinstein Company's biopic, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

He’s been sporting a rather urbane pencil moustache over recent weeks.

But while the thin sliver of facial hair hovering above Clive Owen’s upper-lip appears to suit his handsome features, its presence is more of a professional, rather than personal choice.

Indeed, the 49-year-old actor is currently filming The Knick, a new mini-series based in and around New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in 1900.

Owen, confirmed as a lead in August, will feature prominently in the first season’s entire ten episode run.

Owen was joined on set by Irish co-star Eve Hewson – the 22-year-old daughter of U2 frontman Bono.

The young actress was dressed in an old fashioned nurse’s uniform as she cycled across the set on an equally archaic push-bike.

The recreation of New York circa 1900 was enhanced by the presence of horses, wagons and the prerequisite dusty, unpaved streets.

Michael Fassbender, LIam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan: Like an Irish whiskey Irish men get better with age (INDEPENDENT IE.)

US showbiz website zap2it has compiled a list of the nation’s best looking men, and features many familiar faces such as Colin Farrell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Michael Fassbender.

The list is not dominated by younger stars however, with Pierce Brosnan (58), Gabriel Byrne (61) and Liam Neeson (59) all making the cut to be ranked as some of our best looking stars.

U2 front man Bono, more used to appearing on top musical earners lists, is also ranked as one of our sexiest men, the ever present sunglasses possibly adding to his allure.

(my favorite - Brendan Gleeson)
