HENRY CAVILL: My family are heroes.. my brothers would kick my ass if I acted like a movie star back home (IRISH SUN)

SUNIRISH

Henry is the fourth of five boys who grew up on the British Channel Island of Jersey.

He is very close to his family and credits them with keeping him sane and normal.

He said: “I have two amazing parents who always said ‘do the right thing, but do your own thing and always remain humble and thankful for what you get’.

“And my brothers threaten to kick my ass as soon as I’m not humble!

“There’s something about being exposed in the world of acting and Hollywood that when you go home to your family it doesn’t matter what you say or what kind of mood you’re in, they know who you are.

“That’s special and very comforting. They know I am a good, honest person and that’s a very refreshing and quiet place to be.

“Every member of my family is a hero — my mother, my father and each of my four brothers. They have all shaped and moulded me with love and care and sometimes with very tough love.”

And Henry, who plays opposite Amy Adams as Lois Lane in the upcoming blockbuster, credits his siblings with honing his physical skills.

He said: “We fought like cats and dogs growing up, as boys do. But we had a rule that we never hit each other in the face.

“And that allowed us to be very physical and allowed us to be ourselves, but we set ground rules. There was always a sense of restraint and you never went past a certain line. That taught me certain life lessons — enjoy and indulge but never indulge too much, because if you do there may be bad consequences.”

Henry has been acting regularly in film and TV since he first appeared in The Count of Monte Cristo in 2002 and including Immortals in 2011 and The Cold Light of Day last year.

He starred in four seasons of The Tudors playing the part of Duke of Suffolk Charles Brandon, who raises the hackles of Henry VIII — played by Corkman Jonathan Rhys Meyers — by marrying his sister.

Henry remembers his time filming in Ireland fondly.

Henry Cavill: We get the inside scoop about working with Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Henry Cavill

With The Tudors, which chronicles the early years of King Henry VIII, soon to be shown from the very beginning on Sony TV, Entertainmentwise took the opportunity to sit down with Michael Hirst, the writer, creator and executive producer of the award-winning television drama. We got the inside scoop on what it was like working with a star-studded cast including 'Bend it Like Beckham'’s Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the new Superman himself, Henry Cavill.

 Q. What inspired and drew you to create a television show around the life of a young Henry Tudor?
A. The truth is that I was asked to do it. A young American TV producer came over to meet me and he thought he could turn the Tudor dynasty into an American TV soap opera, which made me laugh. Of course I had written a film about Elizabeth I, and I loved the Tudor period, and I think at the time Working Title and I had debated on whether to do Elizabeth I or Henry VIII. I’d always wanted to do Henry VIII. Like Elizabeth I’d had this feeling that it had never properly been addressed.

Q. Tell us what it was like working with Henry Cavill who plays Henry's best friend Charles Brandon in The Tudors?
A. (Laughs) Yes well he’s Superman now!

Q. I know! When you cast Henry Cavill, did you think he would become a massive star and be cast as Superman in the new Man of Steel film?
A. My partner, who is a producer in Ireland, had worked with Henry Cavill since he had been a boy and he had shot a couple of movies in Ireland. He suggested him for the show, but we had to convince the Americans. And after the first casting with all the executives, the reaction was: 'We have to have him!'

Q. I would cast him!
A. Yes that was the general feeling from everyone, and he was absolutely lovely to work with. He’s very quiet and modest and shy. He would ask me how I wanted him to play scenes, he even asked me once: 'I want to go to the gym what should I work on?' (Laughs) He is very endearing. It’s great that he is with Henry for the whole four series and he remained Henry’s best friend – they died within a short time of each other. It was wonderful that I could take him through all these series.

US showbiz website zap2it has compiled a list of the nation’s best looking men, and features many familiar faces such as Colin Farrell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Michael Fassbender.

The list is not dominated by younger stars however, with Pierce Brosnan (58), Gabriel Byrne (61) and Liam Neeson (59) all making the cut to be ranked as some of our best looking stars.

U2 front man Bono, more used to appearing on top musical earners lists, is also ranked as one of our sexiest men, the ever present sunglasses possibly adding to his allure.

(my favorite - Brendan Gleeson)
