Show creator Julian Fellows and stars Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern were on hand to collect the prize at the Los Angeles awards ceremony, with the rest of the show's cast waking up to the good news back in the UK this morning.
Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley, tweeted: 'Woohoo! Look at that! #GoldenGlobe #Downton #nicewakeupmoment', with Lesley Nicol, Downton's Mrs Patmore, adding: 'Isn't it fantastic – a real thrill'.
The much-loved ITV period drama was honoured as the Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television at the Golden Globes, fending off competition from fellow nominees Mildred Pierce, The Hour, Too Big To Fail and Cinema Verite.
Following the win, Bonneville said: We've had a great night and one out of four nominations isn't bad, is it? It's the most important one – the fact that the show is being celebrated here in America and we're thrilled.'

He added to Daybreak: 'It's wonderful and a bit surreal…it's extraordinary, everywhere you turn in the room tonight there was someone that you've either watched growing up or someone that you admire.
'I was actually in the men's room, as they say over here, with Owen Wilson – washing hands I hasten to add. And I just said, 'Can I just say Mr Wilson that I think you're amazing?' as I reached for the soap! It's quite bizarre over here but wonderful.'
Speaking of the show's success on both sides of the Atlantic, Elizabeth McGorvern (Countess of Grantham) said: 'I think they love the same thing the Brits love about it. It's an escape into a world that is simpler, that is beautiful, that is full of drama and intrigue and humour.'
It was a good night for the UK, with Luther's Idris Elba also being invited on stage to an accept the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, with Kate Winslet winning the female equivalent for her role in Mildred Pierce.
