'I wish mum could have met Kate': Prince William opens up about heartache over Diana's death By Natalie Evans 29 May 2012 13:02 (MIRROR)

Prince William has opened up for the first time about his heartache that his mother Diana never got to meet Kate Middleton.

The Duke of Cambridge admitted that he felt an incredible sadness that the late Princess of Wales was not there to see him marry his long-term girlfriend last year.

In a moving interview with US TV channel ABC, William revealed how preparing himself for his wedding day in his mother’s absence was “very difficult”.

The 29-year-old Duke said: “It’s the one time since she’s died, where I’ve thought to myself it would be fantastic if she was here, and just how sad really for her, more than anything, not being able to see it.

“I think she would have loved the day and I think, hopefully, she’d be very proud of us both for the day. I’m just very sad that she’s never going to get a chance to meet Kate.”

However, his brother Prince Harry added that their mother, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, was still there with them.

Speaking to ABC News’ Katie Couric, the 27-year-old said: “I think she had the best seat in the house probably. But yeah, she would have loved to have been there.”

The young royals were interviewed as part of a two-hour Diamond Jubilee special, which airs in the US later this evening.
