2013 has undoubtedly been Benedict Cumberbatch's breakout year. Bolstered by his acclaimed performance in BBC's Sherlock, the last twelve months have seen him catapulted from respected television actor to bonafide movie star, culminating in a role in The Hobbit trilogy and his appearance as Khan in JJ Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness.

In the coming months he will crop up in three films – The Fifth Estate, 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County – all of which are already generating early Oscars chatter.

But while his name is being mentioned in anticipation of 2014's wave of awards, Cumberbatch can already add a gong to his collection after being named British Artist of the Year ahead of November's Britannia Awards.

Cumberbatch will receive his honour at the Beverly Hilton ceremony, joining fellow recipients George Clooney, who will be awarded the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film, Kathryn Bigelow, receiving the John Schlesinger prize for Excellence in Directing, and Ben Kingsley who has been chosen for the Albert R Broccoli award.
