Benedict Cumberbatch Interview

By Thom Yorke

It seems like a lot more than seven years have gone by since Benedict Cumberbatch first donned his deerstalker as Sherlock Holmes, the alarmingly incisive yet socially inept detective in the BBC series that catapulted his Hollywood career. That’s because, in the ensuing time, the London-born actor has graduated from fan-girl obsession to franchise superstar, while steadily appearing in a succession of prestige projects in theater, film, and television. His mix of gravitas and humility works exceptionally well in fantastical worlds: as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013); as Smaug the dragon and the Necromancer in The Hobbit film series (2012, 2013, 2014); and as Dr. Stephen Strange in Marvel’s Doctor Strange (2016), a role to which he will return in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Back on planet Earth, Cumberbatch has a knack for inhabiting the minds of geniuses, empathetically depicting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate in 2013; Alan Turing in The Imitation Game the following year (for which he earned Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations); and, most recently, Thomas Edison in The Current War, in theaters next year.

Now 41, Cumberbatch is considered one of the most accomplished and ambitious actors of his generation. It would be an understatement to suggest that he has a serious streak, but as his friend, the legendary Radiohead rocker Thom Yorke, is determined to prove, all men—no matter how focused—contain multitudes.

THOM YORKE: I don’t have any chronology to my questions. My approach is a bit more random, a bit more Just Seventeen [an out-of-print British teen magazine]. I actually want to start with the year you taught in a monastery in Darjeeling when you were 19. How was that experience?

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH: It was in an exiled Tibetan community, just outside of Darjeeling, on the border. It was a little hill station town. I was one of five teachers who had done a training course. It was extraordinary, but it was quite an isolated experience.

YORKE: How long did you do that?

CUMBERBATCH: It was five months. I spent half a year working odd jobs to build up funds for the airfare and to pay for the course. You’re not paid for the teaching; you’re paid in experience. You’re surrounded by the monks and their lives. It was a small monastery, and the top floor was the temple. I was living on the bottom floor, which was pretty damp and had huge spiders. I think it was just near the end of the rainy season; I can’t remember, but it was cold. And because it was so high up, you would open your window, and the clouds were like dry ice rolling across your desk. Nature was ever present; that was gobsmackingly beautiful, as was the spirit and nature and philosophy and way of life of these monks.

YORKE: It sounds like you absorbed a lot of that, just by being there. You didn’t have to study it.

CUMBERBATCH: Exactly, it just seeped in. The personalities of the monks were louder than any lesson.

Behind the shoot: Tertius Bune on Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve

GQ STYLE MAGAZINE
By William de Martigny and David Annand Photos by Tertius Bune 25 March 14

It's photographer Tertius Bune's longstanding friendship with British Actor, Benedict Cumberbatch that was the catalyst behind their seminal photoshoot for the latest issue of GQ Style. Shot on Los Angeles' iconic Mulholland Drive we see Cumberbatch and his Star Trek Into Darkness  co-star Alice Eve transformed into a modern day Bonnie and Clyde.

His relationship with Cumberbatch is demonstrated through a truly unique and unfiltered way of representing his friend. "I do believe I can cast him in a light that shows him as he ultimately is," Bune says of the actor. "I'm talking about his versatility as a human being." In fact the shoot is testament to the spontaneity that comes from real friendship - an invitation to stay for a few days in LA provided all the inspiration Bune needed. "It was such an amazing time…but most importantly to witness this truly awesome moment in Benedict's career. Such a gift to be able to share that with him".

Here Bune talks to GQ Style about what it is like to photograph your best friend and the inspiration behind his take on the American Road Trip…

GQ Style: Tell us about your shoot with Benedict Cumberbatch. Where were you?

Tertius Bune: I had come to L.A. for a couple of shoots whilst Benedict was promoting a movie. Benedict invited me to stay with him at his house in Venice Beach. I met Alice the first night I arrived while at an Oscars party. The three of us just clicked. As we all hung out in the following weeks, I thought to myself; here they are after over ten years from first meeting and working together, both of their careers had really picked up steam in the prior few years. This is where the inspiration for the story came. Benedict and Alice both seemed to be grabbing or if you will, "stealing" all these roles in Hollywood. The story was shot on Mulholland Drive, a road in L.A. that has a certain outlaw quality and history to it.

We understand that you and Benedict are old friends - is there a particular trick to shooting someone you know so well?

Yes, Benedict and I have known each other since I was six and he eight years old. There is no particular trick to photographing someone you've known your whole life but I do believe I can cast him in a different light due to the fact that I know him as well as I do.  This shoot in particular I wanted to show his edgier side. Which is not something I contrived, he has it. I see the media painting Benedict as the proper British boy (yes this is part of him), but he has a vast range. And I'm not just talking about acting or character range.

Benedict Cumberbatch hints at Star Trek 3 return

DIGITAL SPY
By Emma Dibdin
Wednesday, Mar 12 2014, 11:03am EDT

The actor revived iconic villain Khan in JJ Abrams's Star Trek Into Darkness last year, and the film ended with the character being placed in cryogenic sleep along with his crew, leaving the door open for a return.

"That was a stupid thing to do," Cumberbatch joked during an interview with The New York Times. "They should have just blown me up."

Abrams will not return to direct the third installment in his rebooted Trek series, owing to his commitment to Disney's upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, but will stay on as producer.

2013 has undoubtedly been Benedict Cumberbatch's breakout year. Bolstered by his acclaimed performance in BBC's Sherlock, the last twelve months have seen him catapulted from respected television actor to bonafide movie star, culminating in a role in The Hobbit trilogy and his appearance as Khan in JJ Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness.

In the coming months he will crop up in three films – The Fifth Estate, 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County – all of which are already generating early Oscars chatter.

But while his name is being mentioned in anticipation of 2014's wave of awards, Cumberbatch can already add a gong to his collection after being named British Artist of the Year ahead of November's Britannia Awards.

Cumberbatch will receive his honour at the Beverly Hilton ceremony, joining fellow recipients George Clooney, who will be awarded the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film, Kathryn Bigelow, receiving the John Schlesinger prize for Excellence in Directing, and Ben Kingsley who has been chosen for the Albert R Broccoli award.

Benedict Cumberbatch Wants To 'Transform' His Body BY CLAIRE RUTTER ON JUNE 19, 2013 (E.)

Star Trek Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch has admitted that he wants to "transform" his body so that he can play an action hero, and have a 'Daniel Craig' moment.

The 36-year-old, who underwent a bit of a body transformation to take on the role of John Harrison in JJ Abrams' latest Star Trek movie, has revealed that he's keen for a James Bond-style physique.

"I'd love to transform my body into some ridiculous war machine," he said, according to TV Magazine. "I want to run around a desert shooting guns at aliens and looking as if I barely have to take a breath."

He also added: "I would love to do all that sh*t. I definitely want my Daniel Craig moment!"

Even though Benedict is due to finish off filming the third series of Sherlock, it sounds as if he's caught the bug for a muscly physique, after his stint in Star Trek.

"Star Trek is, to all intents and purposes, an action movie as much as it is a sci-fi drama, so that involved a hell of a lot of training and long hours," he said. "I had to put weight on, so I'd eat 4,000 calories a day. I went up four suit sizes at one point - it was hard work but a lot of fun."

During the press conference for Star Trek Into Darkness, he explained that gaining the weight and working out was the "hardest thing" about filming the movie "as it meant a lot of eating in a very short space of time and a lot of working out".

Benedict Cumberbatch: Is This Keira Knightley's New Leading Man? By Eleanor Young - (MARIE CLAIRE)

Sherlock - Benedict Cumberbatch

Keira Knightley married hubby James Righton in an intimate French ceremony less than a month ago, but already it seems she's preparing to make way for another leading man.

According to rumours, the actress is in talks to team up with Benedict Cumberbatch, in new movie The Imitation Game, about work on the Enigma code in World War Two.

The film version of the Alan Turing biopic was originally rumoured to star Leonardo DiCaprio in the leading male role, although whispers have now turned to British actor Cumberbatch.

Keira Knightley is said to be 'in talks' over the flick, which could start production as early 2014.

It's thought the film, one of the most hotly-tipped scripts to be released in 2011, will be directed by Headhunters' Morten Tyldum and document Turing's role in cracking the Enigma code.

While details are still very vague, film industry publications The Hollywood Reporter and Variety report that Keira could be set to join the cast as ' a woman from a very conservative background who not only forms a complicated relationship with Turing but is there for him until the end'.

Wow.

Benedict Cumberbatch: I didn't want to be just a stiff lump of muscle in Star Trek Into Darkness (NOW MAGAZINE)

He actor admits that the gruelling regime he followed to beef up was a very tough challenge.

‘That was the hardest thing, in all honesty,' says Benedict, 36.

‘It meant an awful lot of eating in a very short space of time, and a lot of working out - but fortunately I had a fantastic trainer.

‘I'd never been asked to do that before - it was very integral to the character to have a strong physical shape and presence, and to be able to move at the same time, so I wasn't just a stiff lump of muscle.'

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch: James McAvoy is gorgeous but I'm not very confident about my looks (NOW MAGAZINE)

I'm actually shy,' says Benedict, 36.

‘I'm not that confident in social situations - just going up to someone in a bar and saying hi is even more difficult for me because they won't know the real me.

‘They will just know me as a fictional person I play on the screen.'

And despite being heralded as a sex symbol Benedict is also insecure about his looks, admitting that he thinks he loses out on roles for not being attractive enough.

‘I'm aware of the power of looks,' the actor tells TV Magazine.

‘I have wanted to play roles that have gone to much better-looking people than me and you think: "Oh well, that's the pin-up guy's part..." for an actor like my friend James McAvoy, who's gorgeous on screen.

Tom Hollander disputes Benedict Cumberbatch's theory on British baddies in Hollywood (RADIO TIMES)

Tom Hollander disputes Benedict Cumberbatch's theory on British baddies in Hollywood

Susanna Lazarus

Benedict Cumberbatch's recent portrayal of villain John Harrison in Star Trek is just one in a long line of British baddies in Hollywood and the Sherlock star recently explained his theory as to why the Americans seem to enjoy casting us as villains.

“We sound our consonants a lot more which usually means intelligence and thoughts and manipulation – the colder edge of reason – rather than emotion which is all vowels, which is American,” he told Absolute Radio.

But Cumberbatch's compatriot and fellow actor Tom Hollander disagrees, believing instead that America’s stereotyping of British actors boils down to the history of our conflict with the United States which ended with US independence in 1776:

“With respect to Ben, it’s because we are seen in America as baddies as a nation,” Hollander told The Telegraph. “It’s because we were their oppressors once, and they had to fight us off, so the sound of our voices brings all that back and they hear evil.”

'Late developer' Benedict Cumberbatch: I was a bit like Hugh Grant around women (NOW MAGAZINE)

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he was very awkward around women when he was younger.

The Sherlock star might be a heartthrob these days but he admits he was a late bloomer and struggled to talk to girls during his school days.

‘I was a very late developer,' says Benedict, 36.

‘Very late. 15, 16 - maybe even 17. I was a kid until I was 18, really.

‘But the one grace of an all-boys boarding school is that you could lie about what you'd done on your holidays. Not like a mixed school, where you had to parade your girlfriend around the playground.

‘I was a bit Hugh Grant around women. "Good gosh, er, do you mind if I, erm, touch, ah, it? Gosh, I feel funny now."'

Amanda Abbington: Sherlock's Martin and Benedict have a fantastic chemistry (RADIO TIMES) Craig McLean

Thankfully, and just in time, Abbington and Freeman’s young son Joe has finally got his head around his parents’ job. He now understands that, just as Dad isn’t really a young hobbit who hangs out with a bunch of dwarves, so Abbington’s current co-star isn’t actually evil Harry Potter wizard Lucius Malfoy.

“He was terrified the first time I did Case Histories,” Abbington smiles. “When he found out who I was working with, he thought his mummy was going to die – Lucius Malfoy was about to take her away. We had to explain that wasn’t the case. And Joe’s 22 so it was about time he knew.” Boom-tish! Another funny line from this sparky 39-year-old who lives in Hertfordshire. Joe is actually seven, and little sister Grace is five next month.

Next you’ll see her in ITV’s Mr Selfridge as the lovelorn head of accessories, Miss Mardle, and come winter she will be reunited with Freeman on screen – for the first time since they met in 2000 on the set of TV movie Men Only in BBC1’s Sherlock. She is sworn to secrecy on any plot or character details of the new trio of films. But paparazzi snaps from the Bristol set have revealed Abbington wearing a wedding dress. Are the rumours true? To wit, is she playing “love interest” Mary Morstan, and is she about to marry Freeman’s John Watson?

“Well, was I marrying [lovelorn pathologist] Molly maybe?” she says with a coquettish twinkle. “I put that [idea] on Twitter and they all went mad, all the little Sherlock nuts. Not mad,” she backtracks. “They’re very sweet girls. But there is a fandom...”

Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock Holmes star is bear-ly recognisable as he films new series as detective (DAILY MIRROR) By Kate Gibson

Heart-throb wears guardsman’s bearskin hat as he joins real soldiers for scenes at the former home of the Duke of Wellington

Who's this under a guardsman’s bearskin hat? Actually, it’s elementary my dear Watson – anyone could spot Sherlock Holmes in that disguise.

These Sunday People pictures show actor Benedict Cumberbatch looking like he had the Hound of the Baskervilles on his head this week as he filmed his third series featuring the legendary detective.

Benedict, 36, was assisted by real soldiers as he shot scenes at Apsley House, the former London home of the Duke of Wellington.

Sherlock's not usually one to enjoy downtime – he'd rather be out on a case or shooting holes in the living room wall while repeatedly shouting the word "Bored!" at anyone who'll listen. But it seems as if getting the first two episode of series three in the can was enough to prompt even Benedict Cumberbatch's detective to slip on his dressing gown (or smoking jacket) and have a nice sit down.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman grab a coffee as HUNDREDS of fans line the streets to see them film Sherlock (PICTURES) By LOUISE SAUNDERS (MAIL ON LINE)

It's become one of the nation's most popular television shows since it first hit screens back in 2010.

And Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman received a welcome of superstar proportions as they got to work shooting the upcoming third series of Sherlock on London's Baker Street on Tuesday.

Greeted by hundreds of fans who were evidently desperate to catch a glimpse of their idols, the co-stars didn't seem to be at all fazed by the plethora of viewers keen to enjoy a slice of the action.

Chatting away as they wandered along companionably, Martin was evidently in need of a caffeine boost as he sipped away on a coffee.

The duo seemed to be shooting scenes involving a black cab, and in spite of the fact that their every move was being documented by hundreds of camera-wielding fans, they didn't seem to be too bothered by the huge amount of attention they were receiving.
