‘Poldark’ Series Premiere Recap: Part 1

WALL STREET JOURNAL
By  SARENE LEEDS

From left: Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark and Heida Reed as Elizabeth in “Poldark” (C) Robert Viglasky/Mammoth Screen for MASTERPIECE

Thank you, PBS and “Masterpiece.”

One week after Jon Snow suffered multiple stabbings at the hands of his fellow Night’s Watchmen, we have been able to put aside our mourning for the “Game of Thrones” character and his ambiguous future. Because arriving on the TV landscape tonight is another handsome, brooding hero blessed with luscious long locks to keep us company on these lonely summer Sunday evenings.

After a successful run in the U.K. earlier this year, the BBC drama “Poldark,” based on the series of novels by Winston Graham, has premiered on PBS’s “Masterpiece.” And its timing could not be more impeccable: With sweeping epics like “Game of Thrones,” “Outlander” and “Downton Abbey” all currently on hiatus, “Poldark” nicely fills the prestige-television void, especially given the promise of lots of shirtless scenes featuring star Aidan Turner.

Irish actor Turner, known primarily for his role as Kili in “The Hobbit” films, is protagonist Ross Poldark, an 18th-century Redcoat soldier newly returned to his home in southwestern England after fighting on the losing side of the Revolutionary War. For those already familiar with the “Poldark” books and the 1970s TV series of the same name that aired on the original “Masterpiece Theatre,” tonight’s premiere episode may have been a bit of a drag as it focused on setting the scene and introducing us to the main characters. As a result, “Part 1″ was heavy on the exposition and light on the plot development, but for those of us who have not read the novels or seen the Seventies “Poldark” (like this recapper), the episode got us fully prepped for what’s ahead over the next six episodes.

The series opens with a prologue in 1781 Virginia, where landed gentry member Ross Poldark and his Redcoat army are ambushed by a battalion of colonial patriots. Two years later, Ross comes home to Cornwall, a deep scar now marking the side of his face and giving the camera a very good reason to fulfill a close-up-on-Aidan Turner quota for every episode. To his dismay, Ross learns that he’s been presumed dead since the Virginia attack, so his welcome-home party consists of: 1. The news that his father has died, and, to quote “Titanic” gold digger Ruth Dewitt Bukater, “left behind nothing but a legacy of bad debts hidden by a good name” (although in Ross’s case, the debts aren’t so hidden). And, 2. His beloved not-quite-fiancĂ©e Elizabeth (Heida Reed), believing Ross was dead, has moved on and is about to marry his milquetoast cousin, Francis (Kyle Soller).

What’s an impoverished gentleman to do? Despite everyone pleading with him to get lost – especially his Uncle Charles (Warren Clarke), who really doesn’t want Ross messing up his son Francis’s marriage to Elizabeth – Ross is determined to rebuild his father’s dilapidated estate and reopen his family’s copper mine. Is it because he wants to win back Elizabeth (who marries Francis in the premiere episode more out of a sense of duty than love)? Possibly. There’s a lot of “will they or won’t they” in “Part 1,” with a frustrated Ross ultimately spurning the newlywed Elizabeth, telling her “We can never be friends!” But once Turner’s co-star Eleanor Tomlinson appears on the scene midway through the episode, the much more important “Poldark” love triangle is set.

Tomlinson portrays Demelza Carne, a local girl whose miner father’s favorite pastime is beating on his only daughter. To get away from her brutish dad, Demelza enjoys dressing in her brother’s tattered shirt and breeches and running off to town with her best pal, her dog, Garrick. A meet cute between Ross and Demelza occurs during the town’s Market Day when he rescues Garrick – and the girl – from a cruel dogfight, and soon enough, Ross is offering Demelza a position in his house as a kitchen maid. Given the fact that Tomlinson’s name immediately follows Turner in the credits, it is not a spoiler to say that Demelza’s drudge status doesn’t last long.

****

At this early stage of the series, I’m not sure I’m sold yet on the story lines, but as I said earlier, the plot needed to give way to exposition for the premiere episode. What I am loving so far is the sheer abundance of eye candy that “Poldark” provides – and I’m not just talking about Aidan Turner and the seemingly endless shots of his gorgeously glowering visage (he also cuts a fine figure in 18th-century fashions, including those three-cornered hats): The series serves as a free travelogue for the breathtaking Cornwall coastline – this writer is severely berating herself for only going so far as Devon on a trip to southwestern England many years ago – which is just as important a character to the narrative as Ross, Demelza and Elizabeth. If you’re still debating checking out “Poldark,” there’s no shame in coming for the scenery (whether it’s Cornwall or Turner), because chances are you will stay for the story.

“Poldark” airs Sunday nights on “Masterpiece” on PBS at 9 p.m. Follow our recaps all season long here. Follow Sarene Leeds on Twitter.

6 Things You Need to Know About Poldark's Aidan Turner

MASTERPIECE

Irish actor Aidan Turner may not yet be a household name stateside, but when Poldark rides onto your screens, you will definitely want to know anything and everything about the star that took the UK by storm. Start with these six things you need to know about Aidan Turner.

1. Dancing With the Star
Long before dancing in the fictitious assembly rooms of Cornwall, Turner was nimbly leading partners across the dance floors throughout the UK as a competitive dancer, having trained for a decade in Latin American and Ballroom dancing! Tango, anyone?

2. No Account
Unlike his castmates @RubyBentalland @ReedHeida, Turner doesn't have a social presence. "I don't do social media—maybe people should know that, because there's probably a bunch of fake Twitter things out there, Instagrams and all that, and Facebooks. I don't do any of it."

Aidan Turner

3. Shorn Free
Turner's mass of dark, windswept, romantic curls are so swoon-worthy, they've even inspired their own Twitter presence! But are they real? "We had hair extensions for a little while until it grew, and then we took them out. Yeah, it really is my hair, as wild as it is!"

4. A Short List of One
Poldark's executive producer, Debbie Horsfield, wanted Aidan and only Aidan for the lead role. Turner described being offered the part, without so much as a screen test, to the New York Post: "There was a knock on the door and the FedEx guy was there with the first two Poldark books and all eight scripts for the series. I thought, 'What on earth is this?' Then my agent calls and says there’s an offer for me to play the part of Ross Poldark. That had never happened to me before. It was surreal."

Aidan Turner playing Poldark in BBC hit was "meant to be”, says show's writer

MIRROR

Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza and Aiden Turner as Ross Poldark in Poldark

Aiden Turner being cast as Poldark in BBC hit was "meant to be”, according to a key member of the production.

The writer who helped bring the BBC's hit remake of Poldark to TV said the casting of Aidan Turner as the title character was spot on.

The 31-year-old actor has won millions of fans for his brooding role as Captain Ross Poldark and the Cornish saga has since been recommissioned for a second series.

Scenes of Turner swimming naked in the sea and working topless with a scythe in a field have grabbed the most attention, while a question and answer Twitter session descended into farce when the actor was swamped with questions about his looks.

Debbie Horsfield, who wrote the hit adaptation, said she knew "somebody pretty spectacular" had to play the title role and Turner was her first choice.

She told BBC Radio 5 live's Anna Foster she normally does not write scripts with actors in mind but made an exception for Turner.

She said: "I started mulling it over in my head what were the characteristics that you would need and it became clear it was a pretty special person. I wrote one name down in my notebook then closed the book and didn't say anything to anybody."

SPOILER ALERT: Poldark finale watched by 6 MILLION as Aidan Turner drama attracts rave reviews

MIRROR
13:27, 27 April 2015
By Sherna Noah

Six million viewers tuned in to the emotional final episode of Poldark last night - and lamented the end of the first series.

The finale featured the sudden death of Poldark and Demelza's baby daughter Julia and ended with a cliffhanger which will run in to the second series.

The episode peaked with 6.1 million viewers on BBC1, winning its 9pm slot.

It averaged 5.9 million and a 25.4% share of viewers - more than last week but not matching the heights of the first episode - which secured almost seven million.

The installment left many viewers in tears.

"I went to bed with tears streaming. Harrowing but superbly acted," Jo Cooper wrote on Twitter.

Fiona Rose McGregor wrote: "I need a bucket for my tears."

The finale attracted warm reviews, with Allison Pearson in The Daily Telegraph saying that it was "hard to remember a more emotionally pummelling hour of television drama".

On Digital Spy, Cameron K McEwan wrote that it was "a brave move to have such a cheerless finale, but the emotional resonance amid the events of this packed 60 minutes will reward fans immeasurably."

Ellen E Jones wrote in The Independent: "Poldark is not a sophisticated drama, but the simple things can sometimes be very satisfying."

Jim Shelley wrote on MailOnline: "There was only one way the nation's swooning viewers could find brooding, pouting, heartthrob Ross Poldark any more irresistible - make him Tragic. So it proved in the final episode of the swashbuckling Seventies revival."

The BBC is planning a second series of the Cornish saga.

If you can’t have Poldark, what about the next best thing?

Actress Eleanor Tomlinson might spend all of her working day cosying up to Poldark actor Aidan Turner, but it’s his body double who really took her fancy.

Eleanor, 22, has been seeing stunt rider Ben Atkinson, 21, for a while now and the pair are said to be smitten.

They met on the set last April, while she filmed scenes as Demelza, and she was said to have been impressed with his stunts.

Her dad told The Mirror he ‘completely approves’.

We HAD to make Aidan Turner go topless to keep it realistic, Poldark makers claim

The makers of Poldark have insisted they had to make Aidan Turner remove his top for key scenes in the period drama, in order to keep it true to the book.

Damien Timmer, one of the BBC show’s executive producers, said the memorable scenes were “pretty innocent”, and merely recreated the storyline laid out by author Winston Graham.

“Aidan has that integrity in the way he plays Ross, he commits to it so completely, he is Ross in all of his complex brooding,” he told the Radio Times.

When asked about the actor’s regular “shirtlessness”, he added: “Honestly, we were pretty innocent about the shirt taking-off stuff.

“No, really, Ross does it in the book, he goes swimming, he washes himself clean. And he’s a farmer, and it’s very hot in Cornwall! Besides, we didn’t audition him with his clothes off.”

His comments came after viewers complained about Sunday night's penultimate episode in the BBC1 series, because Turner kept all his clothes on.

One wrote on Twitter: "I miss half naked Aidan Turner."

Who’ll win Poldark’s heart? Love triangle is building to a climax

Captain Ross Poldark and his childhood sweetheart Elizabeth

Captain Ross Poldark and his childhood sweetheart Elizabeth

Swoonsome Sunday night period drama Poldark has all the ingredients of a sure-fire hit: ridiculously attractive cast members, beautiful, wild Cornish seascapes and a compelling love triangle at its heart, driving the action forward.

So, it’s no wonder that the series – based on Winston Graham’s acclaimed novels – has attracted in excess of 6.5 million viewers each week since it began in early March.

Now, with just three episodes left in the series, the question on everyone’s lips is whether its darkly handsome protagonist Captain Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) will remain faithful to his flame-haired former kitchen maid wife Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson), or be swayed by his childhood sweetheart Elizabeth (Heida Reed).

“I think Ross and Demelza are very similar personalities and along the way she makes Ross notice that his relationship with Elizabeth would never have worked as they are not alike,” reflects actress Eleanor, 22.

“Ross and Demelza are cut from the same rock; Demelza is equally as fiery as Ross and puts him in his place, but at the same time they just understand each other’s moods.”

Indeed, in recent weeks viewers have seen Poldark find true happiness with Demelza. He declared his love for her, saying that she was his saviour, and last week the birth of their daughter, Julia, brought them even closer together.

Yet he still finds himself inexplicably drawn to his former love, Elizabeth, going as far as telling his cousin Verity (Ruby Bentall) that he would be happiest if he could have them both

Sunday nights have been taken over by the dark and brooding Aidan Turner, who plays the lead role in new BBC drama ‘Poldark’.

Every time the show is on Twitter breaks out into a frenzy over the 31-year-old leading man, but how much do you know about his life before Poldark?

Here’s 10 things you might not know about Aidan Turner…

His TV Debut Was In Another Sexy Period Drama

Turner’s first TV role was playing Bedoli in ‘The Tudors’ - but he only had 52-seconds of screentime! He’s in the very first episode if you fancy trying to find him.

His First Acting Gig Was Flogging Eggs

When he was just 18, Turner was in an advert for Bord Bia - AKA The Irish Food Board - who promote sales of produce in the country. In the advert, a barely recognisable Turner played a young man who finds love amongst the aisles.

He Knew How To Makes Sparks Fly Before Poldark

Before becoming an actor, Turner worked alongside his father as an apprentice electrician. In an interview with The Independent he said, “There were a lot of things I didn’t want to do,” he says. “I wasn’t very academic so I didn’t want to go to college and study anything. I worked as an apprentice with my dad [an electrician] and knew manual labour wasn’t where it was at either.”

Turner has his own fan-run wiki page, which has followed him throughout his career. In Ross Poldark, we have reached romantic hero nirvana

THE GUARDIAN

Ross Poldark
‘He straddles different social classes with the same mastery with which he straddles his stallion.’ Aidan Turner as Captain Ross Poldark. Photograph: Mike Hogan/BBC/Mammoth Screen

Stripped to the waist, his pecs lightly furred, a faint, photogenic sheen of sweat delineating his six-pack, the sun glinting on his dark Byronic tumble of curls, the classic patrician lines of his face given distinction by the devilish scar that lovingly caressed one sharp cheekbone, Captain Ross Poldark treated the nation to some hot scything action on Sunday night – and the nation did swoon. By the time Poldark, aka Aidan Turner, had saved a misguided young poacher from transportation, gainfully employed the local peasantry by reopening his father’s mine, then bedded and wedded Demelza, his flighty young serving girl, Twitter was a’twitter with love for the kind of romantic hero that has been absent from our screens for far too long.

Not since Colin Firth, as one Fitzwilliam Darcy, strode purposefully out of the lake at Pemberley, his white shirt clinging to the planes of his chest, have Sunday nights been such a treat.

In Ross Poldark we have reached romantic hero nirvana. Whether he is straddling different social classes or his stallion, it is always with the same mastery. He has the life experience that can only come from fighting in a war then returning home to find his father dead, the family tin mine all but derelict and his one true love married off to his doughty cousin. He’s equally at home in the drawing rooms of the gentry as he is supping cider in the fields with the great unwashed. He has contempt for those who are rich only by accident of birth and knows how to perform all manner of household tasks. He’s part alpha male, part metrosexual, all combined in one HD-ready, smouldering package.

Now, compare Poldark to that other romantic hero of our age, Christian Grey. Grey’s deep inner turmoil comes from the kind of mummy issues so basic that even a GCSE psychology student would roll their eyes at them. He may be suited and booted, but in the box office-busting adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey, with every extraneous hair felled from his body, Grey looks disturbingly pre-pubescent for a tortured torturer. Even more disturbing is that Jamie Dornan looked sexier playing a serial killer in The Fall than he ever did when he was getting down to some sexy slapping in the Red Room.

There’s something incredibly reductive and old-fashioned about the pumped-up posturing of the BDSM-lite billionaire. It harks back to the days when steamy bodice-rippers featured brutish heroes and love scenes that bordered on rape – the kind of romances that have long fallen out of favour with the readers of romantic historical fiction, who now prefer the more considered and contemporary novels of writers like Courtney Milan, Stephanie Laurens and Elizabeth Hoyt. Their heroines have backbone, their heroes aren’t autocratic arseholes, and any bodice-ripping is entirely consensual.

Aidan Turner's girlfriend denies she is engaged

HELLO MAGAZINE
March 25, 2015

Aidan Turner's fans were having meltdowns last week when rumours circulated the actor had secretly popped the question to his long-term girlfriend Sarah Greene. They no doubt breathed a sigh of relief this week, however, when the Irish beauty revealed she and Aidan are not in fact planning a wedding.

She made the denial when spotted out and about in Dublin, having attended the JDIFF's Expressing Emotion: Actors in Conversation event with her beau.

"I'm not engaged," said Sarah, as reported by Goss.ie. Photographers had flocked to the event to capture the first photos of Sarah's engagement ring, but were left disappointed when they saw the actress' bare left hand.

Aidan and Sarah, who have kept their three-year romance largely out of the spotlight, were recently at the centre of engagement reports.

A source told the Sunday Express that the couple are "really close and happy" and that "marriage is the logical next step for them" – leaving some to jump to the conclusion that Aidan had secretly proposed over the Christmas holidays.

Speaking to HELLO! magazine in this week's issue, the handsome The Hobbit star admitted that he was "out of the loop" and unaware of the frenzy he has caused among his army of female fans.

"Is that a real thing?" Aidan laughed, when asked if he'd heard of Turner Fever. "Oh dear. I don't know anything about that. Sounds frightening though. I don't do social media and stuff so maybe I'm slightly out of the loop to a degree."

Aidan admitted that he doesn't read much about himself and the attention he spurs, especially online. "People don't tell me a lot of it either," he said. "My friends are under strict instructions not to tell me anything so I rarely hear of it, but I get a giggle when I do."

For the full interview with Aidan, pick up the new edition of HELLO! magazine, on newstands now.

Poldark tipped to become ‘BBC’s answer to Downton Abbey’ as second series ‘almost certain’ to go ahead

METRO
Caroline Westbrook for Metro.co.ukSunday
22 Mar 2015 1:16 pm

Is a second series of Poldark on the way?

Speculation over Poldark’s future has mounted further following reports that a second series of the show is looking increasingly likely – and that its star Aidan Turner can ‘name his price’.

According to the Mirror insiders at the BBC have said it is ‘almost certain’ new episodes will begin filming in Cornwall later this year, with execs potentially planning to keep the show on air for several years.

And as the inevitable Downton Abbey comparisons begin to surface, one source told the paper that the corporation was prepared to dig deep to keep the show’s star on board.

‘Aidan has become a huge hit with viewers,’ the source said. ‘The role of Ross Poldark has put him in the shop window and movie makers from Hollywood will be beating down his door.

‘Without Aidan there is no Poldark. There is a real feeling it could turn in to a long-running series.’

Nothing has been confirmed, of course, although the actor previously hinted that a second series is in the works after saying he would be returning to Cornwall, where the show was filmed, later this year.

Aidan Turner: Who Is The ‘Poldark' Star? 9 Facts In 90 Seconds About The BBC Drama Actor... (PICS)

HUFF POST
By Rachel McGrath
March 20, 2015

As Captain Ross Poldark, he’ll be providing plenty of (often shirtless...) entertainment, so there’s no better time to brush up on the facts.

The 31-year-old actor has previously appeared in a number of TV shows and trod the boards in numerous Shakespeare plays, but which films do you know him from? And which racy period drama gave Aidan his big break?

Find out everything you need to know with these 9 facts in 90 seconds…

1. The Irish actor was 23 when he first appeared on TV

Let's start with the basics, shall we? Aidan was born in Dublin in 1983, and he graduated from The Gaiety School of Acting in 2003.

After appearing in a number of plays, he was given his big break with 2007, when he won a guest role in 'The Tudors'.

2. Here's where you've seen him before

You probably recognise him from 'The Hobbit' films, in which he played the dwarf Kili (on the right).

The films' director Peter Jackson added the character of Tauriel, who isn't in the books, and created the franchise's key romantic storyline. (That's not Tauriel in the photo by the way, non-Hobbit fans, it's Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.)

3. Aidan doesn't understand why people think he's hot

We know, right?!

Aidan wasn't best pleased when the BBC released this behind-the-scenes snap, and he told Newsbeat: "I don't know why the BBC are releasing photos of it. It's a bit strange."

6. Aidan gets starstruck just like us

He's previously revealed how daunting it was to film 'The Hobbit' with Ian McKellen, and now, he's opened up about what it was like when Robin Ellis, the original Poldark, stopped by for a cameo.

"We had this scene together when we’d just started filming – a scene where Robin is a judge at a trial," he explained to The Telegraph. "After we’d filmed the scene, Robin turned to me and gave me a wink and a thumbs up."

8. We'll be seeing him half-naked a LOT

The actor has promised that he gets his kit-off multiple times in the series, not that we're counting or anything.

Aidan spent an awful lot of time in the gym while filming, and he's previously stated: "I hate the gym. Working all day and then doing 90 minutes in the gym is a pain, but it's part of the job."
