James McAvoy: US doesn't get normal Brits

BELFAST TELEGRAPH
December 11, 2014

James McAvoy has explained he doesn't think his recent film Filth did well in the US because audiences there find it difficult to relate to working class people who aren't American.

The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby actor said he thought that US viewers struggled with British projects that weren't traditional costume dramas, such as the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's crime comedy novel Filth.

He said of Filth's limited success across the pond: "It's always been difficult. It's not the first time selling something that's very of its nature and very of its country.

"This isn't a bad thing by the way, but if we're selling costume dramas or we're selling that kind of thing, then they seem to go for it, but if you're selling stuff about working class people, they've got to be 'American' for them to get it, and it's always been like that.

"I can't think of too many films that have broken out there massively and become commercial hits. What we always hope is that we can make our money back in our own country, which is not often the case. We're really pleased that in the country that bought it, the people got it, and they got it big as well, which is really great."

James McAvoy says he wants to play Gandalf in The Silmarillion

Exclusive: “My true geek is coming to the fore”
Jan 5th 2012By Total Film

In the current issue of Total Film magazine, we delve into James McAvoy’s dark side, with the Brit actor telling us about his upcoming slate, including gritty turns in Welcome To The Punch and Filth.

You can read the feature in the current issue of Total Film magazine, available for only £1.99 on the iPad, but here’s a snippet of what McAvoy told us when we asked if there was anything else that he was itching to do after his recent spate of diverse projects.

“I’d like to play Gandalf,” he told us, laughing.

‘Gandalf: Origins’, we offer? “It’s called The Silmarillion! It’s a collection of poems and songs that chart the ancient history of Middle-earth. My true geek is coming to the fore, but they’re really, really beautiful stories.

“In part of that is the genesis of Gandalf, or Mithrandir, or Stormcrow, or any of his many, many names. Anyway, maybe that’s the one!”

Benedict Cumberbatch Confirmed To Play Julian Assange, James McAvoy Joins Him NEWS BY KEVIN JAGERNAUTH NOVEMBER 9, 2012 2:57 PM (INDIEWIRE)

Even though Julian Assange has gone from notorious hacker to exiled cause celebre (hell, Lady Gaga of all people paid him a visit at the Ecuadorean embassy in London), his saga remains fascinating and important. Which means Hollywood has come calling. And while there are a handful of competing features and documentaries out there, DreamWorks looks to be out of the gate first as their untitled project begins to take shape.

First rumored last month, Benedict Cumberbatch is now confirmed to play the WikiLeaks founder, while his foil will be none other than James McAvoy. It will be the third pairing for the actors who've previously appeared in the enjoyable and underrated "Starter For Ten" as well as Joe Wright's "Atonement," and this time, it will be Bill Condon ("Dreamgirls," "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn") behind the camera.

James McAvoy: Wanted 2 Will Find James McAvoy Recruiting New Female Character Wednesday, October 24th, 2012 at 7:45am by Kevin Melrose (SPIN OFF ON LINE)

When last we heard about Wanted 2, the long-promised sequel to the 2008 action film very loosely based on the comic by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, director Timur Bekmambetov revealed he’d finally had a breakthrough on the story and original screenwriters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas were hard at work on the script.

Now, some four months later, Haas tells Hollywood.com that he and his collaborator are about to deliver a second draft that picks up with James McAvoy’s William Gibson four years after the events of the first film. “The only thing I can tell you is that Wesley is now, four years later, recruiting a young woman who is in his situation in the first movie,” he said. “She’s got a shitty life. He’s sort of in the Fox role. This new girl is brought into the world.”

Wanted starred McAvoy as a frustrated accountant who discovers he’s the son of a professional assassin and decides to join the thousand-year-old secret society for which his father worked. The film, which grossed about $340 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, also starred Angelina Jolie as Fox, who becomes Wesley’s mentor, and Morgan Freeman as Sloan.

James McAvoy On Welcome To The Punch 'It's fuckin' rip-roaring entertainment' 26 September 2012 | Written by Phil de Semlyen | Source: Empire Exclusive

Eran 'Shifty' Creevy's intriguing new London-based thriller Welcome To The Punch is careering towards the big screen like the kind of souped-up Capri the Professionals used to hoon around in. The hair isn't as permed nor the trousers as tight these days, but, judging by Empire's visit to the film's set, the crims still have ambitions that will test the most hardened copper.

Punch, though, is a different beast to The Sweeney and co. "Whenever we came across a line that sounds a bit geezer-ish or gangster-ish we just got rid of it," stresses Creevy's co-lead and the film's rogue gangster, Mark Strong.

"The script didn't feel like it had the humility and humbleness of a British film," adds James McAvoy, troubled 'tec Max Lewinsky in the film. "Don't get me wrong - I love British film and I love gritty, British drama. But we're not trying to go, 'This is the real world.' We're going, 'Here's a fuckin' rip-roaring, really emotionally powerful piece of entertainment,' you know?"

Bloody Pics Of James McAvoy A Reminder That Danny Boyle's 'Trance' Is On The Way For 2013 NEWS BY KEVIN JAGERNAUTH SEPTEMBER 25, 2012 2:36 PM (INDIEWIRE)

You may have forgotten, given the brouhaha of Danny Boyle's celebrated London Olympics opening ceremony thingy, that he actually has a new movie on the way. "Trance" started filming last September, with the plan to start editing once the director's duties with the mega sporting event were over. Well, that time has arrived and today brings with it some new/old snaps from the movie. Yes, they landed last fall, but here they are as a reminder of what's in store.

Starring a promising cast including James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel, the film tells the story of an assistant at an auction house (McAvoy) who masterminds a heist and teams up with a gang of thieves led by Cassel, only to suffer a blow to the head and wake up with amnesia. As the only person who knew the location of the stolen painting, the assistant is then subjected to analysis from a hypnotist as the gang begin to suspect duplicity. Dawson will play a character who has a relationship with both men. According to Boyle's Facebook page, the movie is "coming in 2013" and we'd guess some kind of festival bow will be in the works.
