Dan Stevens: A year after his shock exit, he's still waiting for his big Hollywood break

Trim and slim: Downton actor Dan Stevens show off his new 'US look' following the death of Matthew Crawley

This time last year, we were still reeling with shock at the unexpected demise of Downton Abbey’s handsome Matthew Crawley, the man who was to be the saviour of the Grantham earldom.

Millions of viewers watched in disbelief when Matthew died in the wreck of his car after crashing on the way back to Downton after seeing his beloved Lady Mary and their newborn son in hospital.

The savage twist had been a well-kept secret, which gave added impact to the element of surprise.

The series has had its ups and downs since then — some of which have been blamed on the plot upset of Matthew’s brutal end and the departure of Dan Stevens, who played him.

Stevens had blown a huge hole in the most beloved TV drama of recent times after deciding he was leaving the Granthams and their stuffy Edwardian manners to move to New York and try to advance his acting career in the New World.

There were whispers that the rest of the cast were less than pleased, particularly when, as it turned out, this year’s fourth series suffered a dip in ratings without Matthew the pin-up boy.

Julian Fellowes had toyed with the idea of writing a plot line that involved Matthew moving to New York on business, leaving Downton’s huge oak door slightly ajar so that he could return for the odd episode when his other commitments allowed, but Stevens didn’t want to come back, so that was that.

Stevens himself is unapologetic. ‘I made my decision for myself, but I didn’t make it alone,’ he has explained.

‘It felt the right thing to do. Also, it excited me to follow my instinct which said this is the right time. It’s just a nice feeling to have when you can trust yourself.

‘I’d had a great three years in Downton. Fond memories, lovely cast, but it was just time. We didn’t expect it to be such a success and when we came together for the second series, we were all a bit shell-shocked. And by series three, it almost seemed ridiculous how big the show had become.

‘I gave them plenty of warning — it wasn’t like I slammed the door and walked out. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to face. On paper, it looked mad to walk away, but it felt like the right time. I’ve got an appetite to learn new things. There was no rancour. Julian was very gracious about it’.

In spite of Matthew Crawley’s demise, Downton remains immensely successful on both sides of the Atlantic.
Whether the same can be said of 31-year-old Stevens is another matter.

For young British actors, the lure of the U.S. is hard to resist, especially if they have already been love-bombed by fans.

And for some it works out wonderfully. Benedict Cumberbatch, for instance, first came to the attention of American audiences as the  star of the BBC drama  series Sherlock.

Suddenly, he seems to be everywhere: the villain in the latest Star Trek film, in the Edwardian TV drama Parade’s End — a U.S.-UK collaboration — and even as the voice of Smaug the dragon in the new Hobbit film.

The dreadful film The Fifth Estate, in which Cumberbatch played Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, was a rare flop on his recent CV. But for Stevens — who appeared in it as a Guardian journalist — it was probably the acting highlight of his year.

His other recent release, Summer In February, was another Edwardian period piece, this time about a Cornish artists’ colony. As with The Fifth Estate, it was drubbed by the critics and withered at the box office. Even supportive tweets from famous friends of Stevens such as Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah and Stephen Fry couldn’t save it.

The public school-educated actor originally moved to New York for only six months to make his Broadway debut alongside Hollywood star Jessica Chastain in the Victorian period play The Heiress.

Many reviewers were enthusiastic, but the all-powerful New York Times critic Ben Brantley damned Stevens with faint praise, saying his performance was ‘shiny, well spoken and lacking in discernible undercurrents’.

Instead of moving back to Britain at the end of the run, Stevens stayed — with his wife, South African singer Susie Hariet, and their children, Willow, four, and Aubrey, one. They now live in a fashionable part of Brooklyn, with the Manhattan skyline looming across the  East River.

Dan Stevens: I'm based in US for now (INDEPENDENT)

16 JUNE 2013

Dan Stevens has revealed he is basing himself in America for the moment because it "makes sense" for his career.

The Downton Abbey star moved with his wife and two small children to Brooklyn while he starred with Jessica Chastain in The Heiress on Broadway recently.

Since his Downton Abbey character Matthew Crawley was killed off, he has filmed Hollywood action movie A Walk Among The Tombstones with Liam Neeson and Julian Asange biopic The Fifth Estate.

Dan said of moving to America: "I don't know about for good but we're living there at the moment. And for work it makes sense for me to be there at the minute.

"But it's good to be back. I'm coming back in the summer to shoot Swallows And Amazons, we're doing a feature film adaptation of that, but in between I'm off back to the States to do an American independent film. So I hope I can keep hopping back and forth across the pond. I enjoy both."

The 30-year-old actor produced and starred in his latest film Summer In February, a period love story set amid the Lamorna Group of artists in Cornwall. It is based on a book written by his former teacher Jonathan Smith.

Dan Stevens is almost unrecognisable in his new role in a gritty Hollywood blockbuster By MAIL ON SUNDAY REPORTER

He made his name playing floppy-haired Matthew Crawley in ITV’s Downton Abbey, but Dan Stevens is almost unrecognisable in his new role – as a tough guy.

The 30-year-old star who has set up home in New York has landed a role in a gritty Hollywood blockbuster.

Dan’s Downton character was killed off in a dramatic Christmas Day car crash after visiting his wife Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, who had just given birth. Now he will be seen in A Walk Among The Tombstones alongside Liam Neeson and Ruth Wilson.

‘I guess I’ve been eating better since I moved here,’ he said ‘And I stopped drinking. At the same time I started filming here, for which I needed to slim down a little.’

The new role comes less than a year after Dan made his Broadway stage debut opposite Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain in  The Heiress.

Dan relishes his new life in  New York with his wife, South African-born singer Susie Hariet  and their children Aubrey, one, and Willow, three.

He said: ‘I was walking round  with my dad the other day. They live in a little village in Sussex and this couldn’t be further from it.

'He was fascinated by this way of living and I am too.’

Dan Stevens to star in 'Swallows and Amazons' film Published Thursday, Apr 4 2013, 4:57am EDT |DIGITAL SPY

Dan Stevens has reportedly signed up to star in a new adaptation of Swallows and Amazons.

The former Downton Abbey star will appear as James Turner - also known as Captain Flint - in the new production, reports The Sun.

Producer Nick Barton's project - a collaboration with Harbour Pictures and BBC Films - will start filming in the UK this summer.

Arthur Ransome's classic children's novel follows the lives of the Walker and Blackett children one summer. The last film version was released in 1974, while Neil Hannon produced a musical version in 2010.

Barton said: "We have gone right back to the original books. The reason I wanted to do this film was that I read all of the books when I was a child and loved them."

Downton Tragedy: Will Dan Stevens Be George Clooney or David Caruso? (SHOWBIZ 411)

02/18/13 2:32amRoger Friedman

WITH SPOILERS: By now, most fans of “Downton Abbey” in the US know what the Brits learned on Christmas Day: Matthew Crawley is most sincerely dead. After seeing his newborn son, Matthew died in automobile accident, on camera, blood pouring out of his head. Series creator Julian Fellowes and the producers took out their most decided unhappiness about actor Dan Stevens leaving them after three seasons. Stevens as much as told us this at the Broadway premiere of “The Heiress” when his rude publicist almost tackled me to get him away.

Stevens had been giving interviews saying he’d brought his family to America and was looking forward to sticking around. He’s walked away from the best show on television on two continents and massive popularity. So what now? Will he follow in the footsteps of George Clooney and make a successful transition to movies? Or will Stevens become the British equivalent of David Caruso, who spurned “NYPD Blue” years ago for a movie career that fizzled immediately? It’s hard to say. Remember Clooney stuck with “ER” for several years before making that full time jump. It was Caruso who left “NYPD Blue” right away.

Stevens might very well have stuck it out for two more seasons of “Downton.” After all, the show only produces a handful of episodes per season–it’s not like he was required to make 22 episodes. And he squandered the good will of fans he was courting for future work.

Mary (Michelle Dockery) won’t be alone for along. Fellowes is already casting for a new love interest, not a husband, but an intermediary fellow. And it wouldn’ surprise anyone if the fifth season endgame brings Mary together with her brother-in-law, Tom Branson, the former chauffeur.

Battle for Broadway's Tony Awards: Al Pacino and Dan Stevens are ‘Featured' Actors? (THEATERMANIA)

The Tony Awards Administration Committee announces the eligibility of 14 Broadway productions from the current season.

By David Gordon  • Feb 15, 2013 • New York City

Who gets to tell Al Pacino that he's been deemed an "Actor in a Featured Role" for his work in the recent Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross?

Pacino was placed in that category by the Tony Awards Administration Committee in their second of four meetings to determine the eligibility of Broadway productions for the 2013 Tony Awards. The committee discussed the eligibility of fourteen productions: Grace; Cyrano de Bergerac; Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; The Heiress; Annie; The Mystery of Edwin Drood; Scandalous; A Christmas Story, The Musical; Dead Accounts; The Anarchist; Golden Boy; Glengarry Glen Ross; The Other Place; and Picnic. While the decisions are often consistent with the billing credits as they appeared on opening night, a producer has the right to petition the committee to change the eligibility status of certain actors. The rulings are below

SPOILER ALERT FOR DOWNTON ABBEY IN AMERICA

**SPOILER ALERT for U.S. fans of DOWNTON ABBEY who have not yet viewed the drama's third season or last night's holiday episode which aired on Britain's ITV network**

DOWNTON ABBEY creator Julian Fellowes has officially decided the fate of Dan Stevens' character 'Matthew Crawley,' he told the Daily Telegraph this weekend.

Rumors of Stevens' potential departure developed months ago, when he first made the move to Broadway to star in THE HEIRESS alongside Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain.

Crawley, following the series' Christmas special, will officially be killed off. Fellowes told the paper that he "didn't really have an option."

"We have always tried to persuade him to stay," Fellowes said. "He had done fantastically well for the series and his creation of Matthew was terrific.

But there was no changing Steven's mind, Fellowes said.

"But this is life. Dan felt that this was right thing for him, and the right moment to move on to different areas."

There were few options Fellowes could take with DOWNTON's Crawley, while respecting the character's relationship with Mary. There was one choice, and Fellowes, as the showrunner, knew it was the only viable one.

"So we didn't really have any option. By him dying, their love can remain in tact."

SPOILER SPOILER Dan Stevens Has Something to Say About ‘Downton Abbey’ By DAVE ITZKOFF (NEW YORK TIMES)

Dan Stevens as Matthew Crawley on “Downton Abbey.”
WITH Michelle Dockery

Be forewarned that this post deals with developments on “Downton Abbey” that British viewers are now aware of, but which have not yet occurred in the American broadcast of that series. In other words, major spoilers ahead.

Just when things were going swimmingly for Matthew Crawley at “Downton Abbey” — that aristocratic character, played by Dan Stevens, was enjoying his long-delayed wedding to Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery); his wife had given birth to their first child, a son; he was delighted by his fancy new motorcar — an automobile accident he sustained in the show’s Christmas special resulted in his demise, and ended Mr. Stevens’s tenure on the popular period drama.

Speaking with The Telegraph of London, Mr. Stevens said that his departure from “Downton Abbey” felt strange but inevitable, and that his decision to leave the series was made before he started filming its most recent season (which begins in the United States on Jan. 6).

'Downton Abbey' EP Says Talk of Dan Stevens' Departure Should Be Taken With 'Pinch of Salt' (THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER)

1:05 PM PST 12/13/2012 by Michael O'Connell

After word of the British series' three Golden Globe noms, Gareth Neame tells THR that 95 percent of the things written about his show are "completely inaccurate."

Downton Abbey is still having a moment. The British import, which received three Golden Globe nominations Thursday morning, continues to linger in headlines despite not having aired a new episode in the U.S. since February.

Nearing the end of its third season's U.K. run and already commissioned for a fourth, the latest rumor has been of star Dan Stevens and the suggestion that the actor may not reprise his role of Matthew Crawley. Executive producer Gareth Neame says fans might be getting concerned over nothing.

"There's been so much speculation about this cast," Neame told The Hollywood Reporter, reacting to its latest accolades. "The thing with the show is, because we don't make a long run -- we shoot about 11 hours of TV a year -- our actors have the opportunity to go and do other work."

Dan Stevens NOT Returning to Downton Abbey! 12/10/2012 8:55 PM ET (PEREZ HILTON)

While the majority of the cast have already signed contracts for season 4 and 5, the British actor has not made his return official — and, according to sources, he probably never will.

Dan is currently appearing Broadway in a revival of The Heiress. We were lucky enough to see him on stage, and we have to admit… he's kinda the shit.

However, the fact that metaphorically reached out to the audience and stole still-beating heart from our chest durning his stage performance will NOT stop us from hating him forever if he leaves Downton!

The is an international phenomenon. His leaving will ruin EVERYTHING!

Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes: 'There's Nothing We Can Do' About Dan Steven's Rumoured Exit (E.)

The writer has ruled out the possibility of recasting Matthew Crawley

Following the speculation surrounding Dan Stevens and his future on Downton Abbey, writer Julian Fellowes has admitted that there is "nothing" he can do if the actor decides to leave to the hit ITV1 period drama.

Having left a question mark over whether or not he'll be return to play Matthew Crawley, Dan told the Mail Online earlier this year:

"New York for me is going to be one big adventure. I will be taking the whole family out and we will be there for six months. I don’t know if I will be returning to Downton."

Commenting on the possibility of Dan not returning to the show, EW.com reports Julian as saying:

"Sometimes actors feel they want to move on. Initially, for the first two or three [seasons] you can contract them, but after that, every season, you have to re-contract them. If they don’t want to come back, there’s nothing we can do.”

Dan Stevens: Brit star toast of the town Last Updated: 12:37 AM, December 8, 2012 Posted: 12:15 AM, December 8, 2012 (NEW YORK POST)

Debonair “Downton Abbey” star Dan Stevens has become the toast of New York during his run in “The Heiress” with Jessica Chastain. We hear the thespian will be feted at a dinner next month at John DeLucie’s new restaurant Bill’s, thrown by Town & Country’s Jay Fielden. Stevens is profiled in the latest issue, out Tuesday, in which series creator Julian Fellowes says he discovered the actor in a lesser role in a BBC production of “Sense and Sensibility.” “If you can steal ‘Sense and Sensibility’ as Edward Ferrars, one of the dullest parts in the English canon, you have definitely got something,” Fellowes quips.

Dan Stevens' eye-popping take on his first week of "US holiday festivities Thanksgiving parades, "Black Friday" and letters to Santa" (TELEGRAPH)

By Dan Stevens
6:00AM GMT 02 Dec 2012

"The Holidays” are here again, kicked off in America in spectacular style by the celebration of Thanksgiving. Unsurprisingly, this is heralded here in the most epic, all-American way in the shape of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Lined by three million people, a two-and-a-half mile route through midtown Manhattan sees floats of every shape and size boasting Broadway shows and brass marching bands, punctuated by prodigious pneumatic manifestations of the household brands and characters that have fed the minds and stomachs of this nation’s children (and many of its adults) over the decades. Towering Smurfs are flanked by a gargantuan Pillsbury Doughboy, a titanic jug of Kool-Aid and a monumental Ronald McDonald, looming down on the crowds with a terrifyingly reassuring “thumbs up”. These are also brands that have fed the nation’s economy – indeed the giving of thanks for the “harvest” has increasingly metaphorical, commercial connotations. One can’t help but appreciate the metaphor as these giant symbols pass by; dominating view yet all hot air, kept in place only by a network of ropes held by a large, exhausted workforce.

Thanksgiving is closely followed by a grotesque, modern iteration of a “festival”. For the past decade “Black Friday” has marked the start of the Christmas shopping season, with stores opening especially early with supposedly massive (illusory) discounts to lure the hordes, with aggressive queues forming almost before Thursday’s turkey has even been battered. Two people were shot in Florida in a fight over a parking space and a friend told me, with curious pride, that in New Jersey his mother “had to punch two people to defend her shopping cart”.

(Blog owner Karen's personal observation:  No offense to Dan Stevens, but, to be fair, two people are always shot in Florida over a parking space.  We Floridians certainly don't need 'Black Friday' for that.  sheesh.  Damn, Bubba, someone just shot me in the foot.)

'Dan's done with Downton': Shock for Downton Abbey fans as Dan Stevens is 'not returning to season four' By SYLVIA MULDER (MAIL ON-LINE)

Goodbye Matthew: Dan Stevens is reportedly leaving Downton Abbey, the show that made him a star

It was just announced that there will be a fourth series and an extravagant Christmas special for the popular costume drama.

But now it seems Downton Abbey will have to move on without its male romantic lead, as Dan Stevens is reportedly not returning to the hit TV series.

The 30-year-old actor, who plays Matthew Crawley, is expected to be a part of the Christmas special and the first episode of the new season, but will then leave the show.

A production source told the Sunday Express of the actor's departure, although this is yet to be confirmed by ITV.

The source told the newspaper: 'Dan Stevens isn't returning to the series. He will probably do the first episode of the fourth series, but that will be it.'

It is not yet clear how the actor will leave the show, but he is said to still be a part of the two-hour Christmas special.

Dan Stevens - Downton Abbey Series 4 to Hit Autumn 2013, But Will Everyone Still Be There? (SPOILER ALERT) 23 November 2012 (CONTACT MUSIC)

Christmas is best for weight gain, uncomfortable family gatherings, warmed alcoholic beverages and most importantly, period dramas. So, the news that a fourth series of Downton Abbey, including a feature length Christmas special, has been confirmed is pretty much the best Christmas gift we could ask for.

Filming for the 8 episode series is set to begin in February next year with it premiering in autumn 2013. Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley, was said to have declined to sign up for a fourth series back in October, but his character is really rather crucial to the whole affair. Having killed off Sybil and the Turkish diplomat back in series 1, another untimely death would render it rather unbelievable. New reports from the Daily Mail say that negotiations are still ongoing for the contracts of all the characters.
