 The 'Notting Hill' star voices the lead seafaring character in new animated film 'The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists'.

He walked the red carpet in London on Wednesday night for the premiere, the Daily Star reported. Grant headed inside for the screening and was later snapped sneaking his godson Damian - Hurley's nine-year-old boy - out of the cinema. Hurley, cricketer Shane Warne's fiance, has previously revealed she was always trying to find some work of Grant that her kids could see.

Grant, who lends his voice to the part, relished the challenge of his first animated role. "I quite enjoyed it. It was a challenge. I'm not very well suited to the puppet but once I mastered it, I loved it," he added.

Tennant - who voices the young Charles Darwin - agreed to the film immediately. "I got a phone call and they said Aardman Animations are making a film. By the time that sentence had finished I think I'd signed the contract," he said. "If you get a call from Aardman Studios I think you know you're going to be in something quite classy and quite exciting, so of course you're going to say yes.

"They're an international treasure. And everything that they do is brilliant." He added: "It's not something I ever imagined would come my way, but I was very happy that it did."

HUGH Grant, who will be in Sydney in two weeks, has spoken for the first time about being father.

Grant, who is promoting animated movie The Pirates! Band of Misfits, told The Guardian that he has enjoyed spending time with his daughter, whose English name is Tabitha, but admitted that she has not changed his life.

"Lots of people warned me ... that the baby period is not that exciting," he said. "But I am excited, actually. I thought, well, I'll bluff through - but very little bluffing has been required.

"I like my daughter very much. Fantastic. Has she changed my life? I'm not sure. Not yet. Not massively, no. But I'm absolutely thrilled to have had her, I really am. And I feel a better person."

Grant said that he feels less selfish but denied that he has ever been "entirely me, me, me".

"I've had other family I look after; I have an elderly father who's not very well at the moment," he said. Granted added that he did not cry but felt "a little lumpy" when he first met his daughter. He also admitted to feeling a certain amount of pride in her existence, saying:

"There probably is some truth that one of our main functions on the planet is to reproduce, because it feels like more of an achievement than it should do. Which is nonsense, really. "But yesterday I took my daughter to see my father, who's in hospital, and all the nurses were cooing over her. And I felt, well, pride."

In his latest role, he's taken on the tabloids – 'a vicious and vindictive industry'. But soon Hugh Grant will be back on familiar ground, giving voice to a big, barrel-chested pirate. In a rare interview, he tells Decca Aitkenhead about standing up for what is right, fatherhood and the genius of Aardman.

The Hugh Grant I meet in a west London restaurant could barely look less relaxed if I'd found him in the dock at the Old Bailey. The mischievously witty actor we know from our screens is nowhere to be seen; in his place is a sober and strained-looking man who actually shudders as we greet.

"Well, I'm very unrelaxed doing a newspaper interview. I think it's only the third British newspaper interview I've done to promote a film in 16 years. But I want to be nice to the Guardian, because I think they've been brilliant." He looks excruciatingly uncomfortable. "Yes, that would be correct," he concurs. How horrible is this for him? "Well, I really hate giving newspaper interviews. I don't want people to be able to say, 'Oh look, he's using this hacking issue to get attention for himself.' It just sticks in my craw if it's about me." Is this as bad as he'd feared? "Yes. It is."

I confess I'm nervous, too, unsure how to interview the star of a campaign against press intrusion without trespassing on the very privacy he's been so persuasively defending. Ever since Grant became the poster boy of the Hacked Off campaign against press criminality and corruption, the tabloids have been poisonous, hounding the mother of his newborn child and accusing him of lying to the Leveson inquiry.

Hugh Grant is incredibly proud of his new movie as it is a “rare” example of him actually acting.
The British star is best known for playing bumbling characters in movies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral.

He’s tackled someone completely new in his upcoming animated offering The Pirates! Band of Misfits, where he voices Pirate Captain. Hugh was astounded when he first saw his seafaring character as he looks so different to the handsome star.

“It did slightly scare me when I saw my character. He is this big, barrel-chested, bearded man. That's never been me. But I gave it my best shot,” he explained.

“They didn't want any of that 'arrgh' stuff. But it's not really my voice. It's deeper and chestier. Actual relations of mine tell me it cannot be me. I'm rather proud — it's the rare example of me acting.”

The movie sees Pirate Captain attempting to rally his crew in the hope of winning the Pirate of the Year prize. He’s competing against his arch-nemeses Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz, voiced by Jeremy Piven and Salma Hayek respectively.

Hugh explained the premise of the picture doesn’t bode well for his character.

“He's terrible,” Huge told USA Today. “They never get any money. They crash their boat. They are useless. This whole film really is a celebration of failure. It is all very British and silly.”

The picture is due out next March and it’s the first movie that the 51-year-old actor has worked on for several years.

His last film was 2009’s Did You Hear about the Morgans? and he’s had fun taking some time out.
“I was very happy not really doing anything,” he admitted. “But then [this] came up, and it made me laugh so much. I thought I'd give it a whirl.”

Ah, Aardman, those comic geniuses from way out West (only not as West as Hollywood). The latest trailer for Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists gives us a few more clues about the plot, and by our rough count about seventy bajillion more gags, both visual and aural. Hugh Grant voices the Pirate Captain - seen here meeting the dastardly Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton) who is Not Amused - who leads his merry but less-than-totally-competent band of bucanneers around the seas in search of treasure and, preferably, the Pirate Of The Year award (modelled in this trailer by Brian Blessed's Pirate King). Things, it's fair to say, do not go entirely to plan. The cast also includes David Tennant, Brendan Gleeson, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, Martin Freeman, Ashley Jensen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Russell Tovey. It's all based on the first two of Gideon Defoe's Pirates! books, and directed by Aardman stalwart Peter Lord with co-director Jeff Newitt. The film's out on March 28 next year, and we'll be following all the developments between now and then. This is some seriously funny stuff and, it almost goes without saying, gorgeous animation.
